I am planning to get an Internet at home for my kids and to make extra money as well. But I have heard that a lot of providers do not deliver what they promise like slow speeds, intermittent connection and the like so I want to know what to look for in choosing which provider is best. I am in the Philippines.

I'm from the Philippines as well. When I was researching for the best internt option to take, I read good and bad feedback for all the internet providers. There's no one internet provider commonly and strongly recommended. The one thing I noticed however is on location. I think your location matters. You may want to check out other subscriber's feedback on your location. In my case, I'm using Smart Bro. I get a good connection because I live near one of their towers and the technician strategically placed the antenna in an area where it's parallel their tower. However, my colleague who lives outside the metro sometimes complain about his connection especially during rainy season (which I can't vouch for now as I have yet to experience it). Also, after sales customer service is important. Again, I haven't yet tested since I didn't have the need to call them eversince I subscribed more than 6 months ago.

I think in choosing an internet provider, you have to research or scout your area. Ask your neighbors about their connection and get their feedback. This will help you a lot.
Another thing is to check the service provider if they do have a good signal in your area. Trouble for some sales representative, they do not advise you if you will be getting a strong signal. Failure to inform will always lead to you getting irritated with the provider and a never ending battle to get out of the two-year clause they often do.
Research and feedback - very important. :)
Hope this helps!

I would take into account the subscription rate or the fee as well as the connection speed. Congratulations on your internet! Hope it serves you and your family well.

Always assume that your Boadband provider is at the most providing you speeds at half what is promised.
Run a search online for any problems the company may have. If there are a lot of reports of problems with the company (Bad Customer service, outages, etc...) it will show up online.
Also it can't hurt to find out how many times the company has been sued.
Consider how much it will cost you. Other then that it pretty much seems to be a crap shoot. Personally I would just ask your neighbors what they use and if they are happy with it.

I could never recommend to anyone what internet to get because I didn't try every ISP in the Philippines, but I could recommend PLDT because I'm using it and I could download at 150-200kbps/sec which is fast in the Philippines. Its pretty stable too.
