I've seen some people these days, ordinary people who has high end cell phones, touch screen, with high resolutions etc. But if you look at them, you'll definitely see the kind of life style they have. They may not be able to pay or have the other things they need but it wonders me, how could they afford a high end cell phone if they're struggling with their everyday lives. Are cell phones are want now? As far as I know, cell phones is used to communicate, the features of it are just extras.

some people like the spoiled ones claimed it as a want. some ordinary people claims it as a need. want if they use it for socialization, need if they use it for special purposes and importance. but for me, i dont use cellphones for i dont need and want it. i'll just go and borrow from my siblings if i need something important. :)

A want. I know several people that are completely broke, but have expensive cell phones. Then they complain about not having money. I went broke about 3 years ago. During that time I canceled my cell phone. I didn't have the money for one, so I terminated the policy. Guess what? Life went on. The world still spun around. The sun came up in the east, and sank in the west. If I really needed to talk to someone, I borrowed someone's phone. Or I used the phone at work. Equally though, I was able to pay off debt with the money I saved, and now I am not broke anymore. Cell phones are a want. There are very few 'needs' in life. You need air. You need food. You need clothing, shelter, water. Perhaps you need someone to love, and be loved by perhaps. Beyond that though... civilization has existed for thousands and thousands of years, before cell phones came about. In fact, 1995, just 15 years ago, cell phones were an oddity, a luxury item only the richest of the rich had. How can something that was rare just 15 years ago, suddenly become something impossible to live without today?

I really like your response. It's a different point of view. There's nothing wrong on embracing technology, even people do business or even try to live and even earn through technology. True that before only the richest are the one's who are able to have this kind of stuff like computers, cell phones etc. But as time pass by, a lot changes. It's just that some people see this kind of stuff as a need though when they have it, it turns as a want because they don't really need it. Other people guessing numbers just to have textmates/ callmates.

There was a guy I knew many years back. An amazing guy. Amazing family really. He immigrated to the US from Romania to get away from the war. He worked at a restaurant where I was working at the time. The pay there was about the lowest possible rate you can get. In the US, it would be considered the poverty level. He came here with nothing... as in NOTHING... Wife, two kids, and the clothes he arrived in. He got a 1 bedroom apartment. He walked to work, and his wife didn't work. She walked to the store to buy food. He got some used bicycles for his two kids who rode them to school. No TV. No computer. No cell phone. No car. No motor bike. He lived a very basic life, and he survived. Further, over the next 2 years, he worked his way up, got a pay raise, and then became manager of a Rent-a-Car at the airport, which is good money. Whenever people tell me "oh I can't live without...!!!" blaw blaw blaw... I remember that Romanian guy. Yes, we can survive without these things. If you got the money for it, go for it. But if you are broke? Cancel the stuff. It's not a necessity.

in some societies cell phones are considered as 'status', and people who do not want to 'show' their current financial or other situation use them as 'mask'. I suppose these people can not conform with themselves and the main problem is realization of their reality.

True, people tend to show of their high end phones, holding it while walking even though they are not using it.. maybe just to show that they're not struggling with their lives.

I do have a high end cell phone, but I have the money to pay the bill every month, and it is the best cell phone I have had. It has lots of features and I can do a lot with it, like access mylot and post from my cell phone, which is one reason why I bought it in the first place, so I can access it when I am not home. It does a pretty good job too, and I am glad for that. I know what you mean though, that people will not have money to pay their bills but will have an expensive phone. i wouldn't have this phone either if I couldn't afford it. It just doesn't make sense that is for sure. I know my limitations, and I won't go over it. Take care, and happy mylotting.

Well I still remember those days we did not even have a pager, had to carry a coin to make a call in case of emergency. Today, we feel nearly incapacitated if we can be at reach or reached, more over love the access to the internet and carry on with gossip. I feel its a need, more then a want. In case of emergency, it sure saves the day to have a way to contact people and get help.

Acturally,i do not agree your opinion.I think cell phones are both a want and a need. In modern life, cell phones are absolutely necessarily for us to communicate. With it,We save more time, work effectively and live expediently. It drives the development of the world. When it becomes popular, people are not satisfied with its use just, but seeking for other diverse functions. Now,Cell phones have become fashion just like clothes. Sometimes,it has become a symbol of status. We can identity what a man does from the style of his cell phone.

What if I tell you I saw a vendor having a touch screen phone? Would you still base it on a man's life style?

Cell phone is a need as it connects people all over the world. However, I do not feel the need to get a fanciful one. I do not see any point in getting a cell phone to install applications to play games. Cell phones are for calling and texting. So long as these 2 functions are present, any phone will do for me.

Same here. There are times that I'll be amused on the high end cell phones because I never knew a cell phone could be like it. But everything ends there, I don't get tempted on buying a new phone just to have a high end phone as well. Texting and calling is what is important for me as well. Happy mylotting :D

cell phones are already a necessity in most cases, in my opinion. just like for kids who go to school. when they are out of the house, cell phones keep him/her in touched with the family. although in the end it becomes a necessity when kids make use of the cell phones to communicate with their friends, classmates, it is but normal to make use the most out of it.

I don't think kids do really need a cell phone, especially at the age of 7-12. Every child survives his school days without a cell phone and children may use it for other things. It's not that I don't want my child to be in touched with me, I just can't see the point of giving a kid a phone for the sole purpose of talking to him when you're both away.

with the snail mail still existing, coupled with the email capabilities of a computer with an internet connection plus the fact that landlines are still everywhere cellphones are still a want. not that i don't have a cellphone, i do, for it is easier to use this than snail mailing it, emailing a message or looking for a landline somewhere. but still, it is still a want. that is why am still with 2630.

I agree, a cell phone becomes a want if we think that we want one because of its features but if we think of the handiness it could bring us like easier communication, mailing purposes and it will be used for something important then it's a need :)

For some, having the latest mobile phone is a need, and for some like me, it's just not that important at all to have the latest mobile phone. I don't even need one, but I'm thankful for the times it helped me out, like when I had an engine breakdown or missed the bus.

Hi Chiepao I have a cellphone but for me its more of a need than a want I use it for emergencies or sometimes I call my husband when I get off work to let him know I'm on my way home, also I call my daughter to make sure she's ready and waiting for me when I pick her up from school , so for me its sort of both I want one and need one but I am not the type of person who has to have this state of the art high tech gadget I believe cellphones have a main purpose to keep in touch just like regular phones, I don't feel the need to text or get online (heck the screens are so small anyway I would just rather get online with my regular PC) but I must say I do like one feature my husband has on his phone he can get online actually his phone can be used to do just about anything, I like that he can get online and transfer money using his cellphone from our bank , since we do bank online and off it does come in quite handy Like one time we were at this furniture store and we didn't want to use our charge cards for the purchase so he got online and transferred money from our savings into our checking so we could get it without having to go back home .

in my own opinion.,cell phones is a want not a need...want and need is different...when you say want, you are aiming something that is not worth buying for.,and when you said its a need, you will buy something that is useful and and it is necessary for your daily needs.,

If the cell phones are used instead of landline phones, then yes, they're a necessity. If supposedly you're struggling to make ends meet, then get the basic cheapest phone, to meet your needs. What get's me are people who have cell phones, house phones, computers, laptops, navigators and every other kind of gadget, but can't make ends meet. Also, what's so special about geting the web on your cell phone, if you have a computer?

Web on cell phones are extras and technology has its reasons and edges. I could say that web on phones are okay. If you have to check your emails asap and you are in a car or on a way to some places. What scares me sometimes are some kids, age bracket from 8-12, having cell phones. It's just like risking your child to talk to a LOT of strangers.

Hi chiepao, A cellphone is a NEED when you have it for the purpose of connecting with your loved ones, when you are on the go and you need to check for your emails, you don't have the time to check the internet, we need a cellphone if we are too busy and from time to time we need to text and call our friend to tell them we remember them,, A cellphone is a WANT if you still have a cellphone, it still caters to your need, but to are buying another one just to keep up with your friends, to "show off" to people that you have money, and to show off your status symbol. I'm glad that you are a keen observer, i also wonder how children who are still in first grade being given a cellphone by their parents..

True, even kids have their own cell phones. Some parents would even reason out that they would like to keep in touch with their children etc. but I survived my elementary days without even having a phone. Just my paper, pencil and books.

cell phones have become a need. although i agree with you that some people are very specific when it comes to their phone. it has to have the best screen resolution, the most number of megapixels, quadband, that kind of stuff. i believe that cell phones are a need for communicating but when you're reason for buying a specific phone isn't really for communicating, then that's the time that your cell phone has become a want. for example, if your phone breaks down and you need to buy a new one but you don't have a lot of money for it. you can just buy the cheapest one available even if it doesn't have a camera, even if it's not colored and doesn't have any high-tech features; that's when a cellphone is a need. but say, you don't have enough money and you still somehow buy a 'techy' phone, then that's when a cellphone is just a want.

Before, they were wants, but at present, they are now needs. It only becomes not a necessity when a person is always up to date with the latest trends in cellphones, with unnecessary or not really needed features.

For me cell phone is more of a need than a want. Yes, as you rightly put it, i use it to communicate and that's y i have a basic phone. But then, it is for the people to choose there needs and wants. So i really have no comments regarding that.

For the communication aspects, i think in todays world cell phones are a need unless you want to get left behind. However, as for the extras like web browsing, high resolution etc, then that part of it all is a want. I don't have a high end phone and don't use it for anything more than calling and texting my friends. Sure a better phone would be nice but its not something i need :)

Maybe they stole it or maybe they bought it from a thieve. As we all know cellphones now a days are worth like jewelries or even more expensive, that is why this are mostly targeted by the snatchers/robbers. But i don't want to be that sarcastic about those people who have an expensive cell but looks like he/she can't afford one. Maybe they saved for it. Or may be they can afford and they just don't look like they can. Or maybe it's a gift or a prize on some raffle contest. Maybe maybe maybe... Let us not be that judgmental about people. We are leaving in the 21th century, and cellphone is a NEED. Although there are different types and models of phones, and there rises the question, WANTS. Good day

I think that it used to be a want. now it is a must to have cell phones. what can we do? I maen this life makes us to be like this. we need a cellular phone so we can do a lot of things running from one side to another. everything is very fast those days so, sometimes, we need to do everything while walking around, or when we are in the bathroom, on our way to work and so on...
