Why do they cough up blood?

Is it scar tissue from the lungs?
And, also, why do their fingernails not have any beds? My bf went to pick us up dinner the other night, and there was a girl in her twenties waiting on him who asked if he had CF. He told her he did but asked how she knew (he didn't cough or anything in front of her). She told him she had the same kind of fingernail, not as pronounced.
Are there are other physical differences?

My oldest daughter, (Heather), was born with Cystic Fibrosis. The symptoms you describe are indeed typical. The unusual shape, (clubbing), of the fingertips and nails. The coughing, etc. I have questions about your boyfriend's age, etc. and would like to communicate through private message. I have to add that I felt almost fated to respond to your discussion when I noticed two things; the cf connection, and your screen name. My other daughter, (April) has always loved ladybugs and has always considered the ladybug her "totem". In fact, her nickname is bug because of it. If you are interested in communicating privately, please request me as a friend and I will get back to you asap with my questions and such answers as I am able to provide from my own experience.
I send smiles,
ink

I have added you. :-)
My boyfriend is going to be 37 this year. We are lucky. I know this is fatal at a very young age.
He gave me a ladybug necklace, and he is a magician, and thus, my screenname formed.
I want to know why sometimes his phlegm contains blood. I have seen it green and cheesey, and am used to that by now. The blood scares me. It makes me think something is piercing his lungs.

Thank you for the response. I normally party over in the politics forums here, but this subject is so important to me, and I love my boyfriend so much.

I hope you checked the link. I know how much this has to bother you. It would me too.
This is or could be a life long commitment on your part. We never know when it's out turn.
A year ago yesterday I suffered my first heart attack and quit smoking.
I then had a second attack on the 22nd and here I am.
Simply put, we could all go at any given time..Your boyfreind is lucky to have you at his side and enjoying life.
Hang in there.
