I saw this news first on TV then after I searched it over the internet. There is a couple in Tokyo, Japan who got married officiated by a robot. The couple, Tomohiro Shibata and Satoko Inoue, like robot and in fact working the robotic industry. They said the it were robots who made this connection for them so they have decided to choose one to officiate their wedding. You may check the news here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8685184.stm I found the news funny and absurd at the same time. I don't know how you can be really serious about it. Is this really how marriage being treated now a days? Now if I am working in zoo and so as my husband can I just ask a monkey to wed us? Or are we really getting too impersonal in this modern world? Maybe we can consider marrying a robot too.

hi rajaiv0810 well I think its because they worked so closely in robotics and it brought them together that they chose this robot' to marry them,To us its funny and absurd as its not the way I know I did it when we married but if the wedding vows are given and both people repeat them and mean them it will be an okay wedding to them. I'would not want to get married and have the priest be a robot, but to each his own. No most of us are pretty personal in our relation ships so this just sticks out like a sore thumb.

I agree with you Hatley. It may seem ridiculous to us, but I think this Japanese couple chose a robot to officiate their wedding because it has a sentimental value to them. After all, robots brought them together. And as you said, it's okay as long as they really meant what they said in their vows. I think a marriage becomes meaningful not because of the one who officiates but because of the couple.

Hi Hatley and Angelajoy! I just couldn't imagine the wedding how did they actually do the ceremony. But you also have your point there because the most important thing is the two of you understand and love each other. In fact, marriage right now is not even a guarantee that you two will last forever. It needs more than the ceremony to make marriage work.

If you thought getting married by a robot was weird check this out. Dogs getting MARRIED?! I've seen it all...in hideous outfits too. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100516/tod-ruff-love-yorkshire-terriers-wed-in-870a197.html I find it so nauseating.

Actually, I heard about someone marrying a Barbie doll and another a Nintendo. It is really sad how people would distort marriage that way. It was not how God meant marriage to be. I just wonder, how did the robot get the license to marry people? Did the government actually grant that robot the authority? The way I understand it, the officiating minister should be given authority by the state to marry people. These people are so lost...

Marry a barbie doll and nintendo? What kind of people are they? I think they are lunatic. At lest these Japanese couple both of them are real full blooded human. So even if it was the robot who officiated them it is the 2 of them who will be together. People are getting crazy everyday.

Robotic wedding...what a wedding I have seen the video footage and it strike to me as weird and kind of futuristic in style. I don't want to judge hardly the couples opinion why in the first place they plan to get married and be officiated by a mere robot. I just wonder what kind of marriage life they will have. And what would they will tell to their children about their wedding. This couple were one of a kind and they somehow get so attached to their robot friends and to include that robot in their marriage vows will be a talk of the town. As for me I will still choose human priest to officiate my marriage.

I think in terms of telling a story to their children, it would even sound more interesting because of it's uniqueness. But I would also choose a human being to officiate on my wedding and not a robot. That is because I am not living in a robotic world.

That is completely ridiculous. My wife and I spend a lot of time around fruit and vegetables. Perhaps we should have been married by a pineapple or a carrot!

What is wrong with this people? I really don't like the idea that using a robot, crated by man, will we defiled GOD's sacredness in marriage. That is so absurd and so troubled. Maybe the people don't believe in God. I really don't like it how people blasphemy sacredness.

Well I couldn't judge them because of God. A lot of people do nit believe in God either and their decision is probably not because of religion whatsoever. What is just funny about it because a robot is robot and not a human being.

We all have our own preferences because we are individually unique. It may be inappropriate or impersonal, but perhaps to them it is the best way they want to remember their wedding. Remember that the wedding or the marriage vows is the beginning of their life as husband and wife, it isn't the end. They have a long way to go. As to the robot officiating a marriage. In civil weddings, the most important part is the signature of the judge over the marriage contract - that's it, the vow isn't important, neither is how they did the wedding. However, it's different in religious weddings. The sanctity of the tradition, consecration and union of the couple is what's important - which makes it more sacred for most. But, regardless the medium of getting married in doesn't really prove that the union would be short-lived or could actually last forever. Marriage is the easy part. The later part is what's difficult - but not impossible.

Their wedding is indeed very unique and extraordinary. I remember when we got married in front of the judge it was like 5 mins and everything was done. My marriage in the church was more meaningful because of the homily of our friend priest. That is true regardless of the ceremony it you as couple who is going to make it work. Unique or traditional weddings wouldn't mean a thing if you don't love each other.

Like you, when I heard of this, I thought that it was absurd. I just don't get how a robot can legally perform a wedding ceremony. I just don't get it. It's something that I don't think that I'll ever really understand. I'm just really glad that a reverend, who happens to also be a friend, married my husband and me.

Ya, it's weird! I have even heard of one man married his pillow!! And another one married to also not a life being (forgot what's that). That's funny and i really cannot understand why they have this behaviour. Strange!

I heard about this on the raido last night. It was very intersting to say the least. the network played the audio of the robot giving the coule there vows. I think this was an intersting gumick to avertise for the robot indusutry.

Hello Raja, That ain't bad, something that usually happened in the star wars but i guess this symbolizes they're commitment and knowledge in the robotic industry. Japan's quest for robotics is really giving a small bright future for the rest of the world. but getting a married with a robot? am still a bit conservative on this one. clearly every one is doing what ever they want now a days

Well, they say that robots can be programed to do anything, so why couldn't a robot be allowed to unite two people in marriage. This is definitely not the first time that two individuals have gotten personal with the way that they decide to carry out their wedding and it certainly won't be the last time. That said, I think that the reason that these two people chose a robot is because of the fact that they are involved in the robotics field and they feel that it was robots that brought the two of them together.

It's like a joke, isn't it? Marriage is one of the most solemn and sacred sacrament that only God or His representative can perform. A robot? Are they kidding? I guess the couple just wants to make it to the headline or YouTube. Otherwise, why would anyone want to be wed by a machine? That's ridiculous.

I consider wedding as a sacred ceremony and having a robot officiate the wedding is definitely a no-no for me. Even if the technology is already advanced I would still go for a human who has the wisdom and the knowledge to officiate and bless my wedding.

It is also too high tech for me. When you have the wedding ceremony the priest or the judge would also share their sermons and guidance with the couple. In this case, I don't know how the robot will do the ceremony. Maybe there is a;ready a program for that. I really found it funny.

Hi Rajav, i saw it on tv this morning before i went to work. it's amazing but not a good one. imagine a sacred sacrament being officiated by a robot. non-sense.
