We got into a discussion at lunch at work the other day about whether or not Hawaiian shirts are appropriate for the office. It was one of those things where it starts out as a normal conversation and then all of the sudden one of those super intense people gets involved and you want to walk away but it's more fun to argue.
So anyway, this guy, we'll call him Stan, was going on and on about how only dress shirts and ties are appropriate in the office. Most of us were like hey Stan, really, do you see anyone wearing a tie right here? Are YOU even wearing a tie? Exactly.
Anyway, Stan said Hawaiian shirts are too FUN for the office and then he was getting mad because most of us were laughing at him.
What do you think?
PS. Next month is Stan's birthday and we're going to place a large order from http://www.beanteacher.com/ and everyone is going to wear a Hawaiian shirt to work on his birthday. We're going to take pics. lol.

This would have to depend on the office. If it is a corporate business and you have big business executives coming and going, Hawaiian shirts would probably not be very appropriate attire for the office. these shirts should be saved for more casual atmospheres.

Loud prints are always a giveaway to something informal. It may look great on the beach, but doesn't sound 'serious' enough to be worn at work. I think it's because of the fact that it's actually dizzying to look at a person wearing these prints a long time - now what would happen if you're talking in front of your employees for a long time, I'm pretty sure they'd no longer would want to look at you (with your shirt like that) for more than 30minutes.
Just think about it. It's not about freedom of expression, but rather, the freedom that we could have focus while looking at a person speaking instead of getting nausea or dizziness.

Most workplaces have this so-called dress code and my office is one of this. You have to wear casual work attire, not necessarily a tie or long sleeves but we have to dress appropriately. However, on weekends, we can wear shorts, sandals and even Hawaiian shirts, it adds fun to the work. It appears like you just want to annoy that person in your office but just remember, have fun but be careful also with other person's getting offended for you may end up with a not-so-fun work memo. Good luck!
