I used to be a backpacker in my younger days. Now I am an independent traveler. I have a large backpack and a day pack. In the past I stayed in backpacker hostels. I belonged to the Youth Hostel Association. I traveled on my own and stayed in a dorm bed. I met other travelers and got chatting to the local people. I had an International Student Identity Card when I was a full time student. I traveled by train around Europe when I was 18 years old. By the time I was 20 years old I was traveling around the world as a budget minded backpacker. Great countries to go backpacking in are France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary. Further away from home I have backpacked in Australia and New Zealand. In the USA youth hostels are economical accommodation. If there aren't backpacker hostels it is possible to stay at a cheap guest house. I stayed in a private room in some locations.

When I lived in Colorado I used to backpack and hike a lot. I think that it is always better to go with someone. The buddy system is good in case of an emergency. Always be aware of the possibility of any dangers where you go. Like if its high altitude the possible weather changes etc. Take a first aid kit. Always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Dress appropriately. Go explore and enjoy the nature around you. Have fun.
