"Dog's are man's best friend" is a fallacy!

I can't agree that dogs are man's best friend. Dogs can't make choices; they operate through their instincts, and they are different from humans. I think that is the reason why it is challenging to make true friends in the "human world" because man does not operate through instinct; we make decisions, we relate, we have emotions, experiences, preferences, etc. Pardon me for saying this, but in my observation people who have difficulty relating with other people would prefer "relating" with their pet because unlike man, pets can't tell you what they think about their attitude or tell them the truth about their bad habits, while human do make comments and will tell you what they think. Some people just can't handle that.

I take your point but I am not sure dogs cannot make choices. A dog that is trained must go against its instinct. My dog sees another dog and its instinct is to run up to it but my command to 'heal' gives it reason to overcome that instinct and you can, on occasion, witness it struggling against its instinct. In that case think it is fair to say it makes a choice all the best urban

Yes, they are conditioned (Trained is a better word) but they still have to choose between instinct or conditioning all the best urban

I think they are doing it because of conditioning. they are conditioned to act in a certain way when hearing or seeing a certain command. It's still not a choice though.

Did you ever stop and think that a person relating to their dogs more than to other humans. Might be doing that because of the fact that human interaction is more abusive. That those people might find relating to dogs better for them because dogs don't tell them how worthless they are, or how stupid they are,or treat them like they don't matter. That's what my parents always said to me when I was growing up. So maybe you should check yourself, you should realize that not everyone comes from loving good homes.

Hi there, I apologize if you think my opion is stupid. But I find that my dogs tend to listen to me more than my own family. As far as love and care. I get that when I take care of and love them. They bring laughter and joy to my heart and I feel a real sense of peace when I'm taking them for a walk. I have experienced my life without them in it recently and do not wish to go through that again. I'm sorry that you think that animals don't have a place in people's lives or hearts. I don't tend to feel the same way.

Hi there! I don't know if you get the irony of what you are saying. you see, people are design to relate with people, not with animals. I understand some people who were abused during their previous relationships but we are not to let our past hold us. yes there are abusive people out there but let us not forget that there are plenty who are serious when it comes to relationships as well. Relationship is two-way, a person may relate with his dog for some time, but he will surely come to the point where he wants to be loved, cared, and just listen... sad to say dogs can't do all these and a lot more. You take care.

Dogs can't make choices actually they can and they do..especailly a trained dog..Dogs are highly intelligent animals..Seeing-eye dogs, police dogs, even many dogs that are just pets show intelligence..and that they can and do in fact make choices we make decisions, we relate, we have emotions so do dogs...they may not "relate" the way we do but they do make decisions and they do have emotions that are very obvious.. As for dogs being "mans best friend"..the general reason its said is because dogs are EXTREMELY loyal animals..they are also helpful, comforting, protective and so on..

I think it is more of an Animal Instinct than a choice or will. It would be an insult for me if my wife would tell me she loves me out of "instinct" than a choice or commitment.

Sorry, I am not agree with your points, which says dogs are man's best friend. Because, its animal & we are human being. Also, some religions not allowed Dogs. Further if we had any problem we are talking with our friends & get ideas & advice, But, how can we get any idea or advice from Dogs.

I have to agree with all that. Ive known other humans to be more loyal to me than a pet. Animals simply protect those who they think of as being one of them. They are simply following an instinct. They will protect you from an outsider trying to hurt you but let it be someone else who is living in the same household and they won't do the same thing. I've heard a lot of news too about pets turning on owners out of no where and these are pets that were well cared for and treated very well just one day attack their owner and kill them or the owner ends up in the hospital so that "loyalty" only goes so far.

I agree! That's because they operate through instinct not through choice. They can't commit, and they don't understand the real essence of the word relationship! it's a one way "relationship" with dogs or all pets. We have to relate with people and help or preserve animals.

It is said that "dogs are man's best friends" because they will stay loyal to you no matter what. If you are the owner of the dog, it will do everything to protect you. It will still want to kiss you and show you his affection, show his happiness when he sees you even when you treat it badly. See? This does not happen with humans. Man's love is almost always conditional. It has always an ulterior motive and sometimes your own kin can even go to the extent of killing you or going against you. Contrary to what you said, psychologists believe that pet-lovers or people who value, care, and love their pets are the kindest and most sensitive people on earth and I agree with this 100%. I am a pet-lover so I should know.

Thanks for the comment C. I got your point, however, I would like to point out the beauty and challenge when it comes to relating with humans; it is always a two-way relationship where both parties can relate. The point that I was driving with regards to my observation was the challenge some people can't face... the challenge of relating with people who has the will to either like them or not. dogs have no choice to like you or not. they will like you if you will feed them, other people don't even if you are being good to them, and that's the challenge. do we give up or not? there is no challenge when it comes to pets or dogs, they'll like you easily.

Well dogs are dogs and humans are humans By saying that "dogs are mens best fiend " it is now trying to say that they are more superior to humans As a matter of fact it means to convey that they are more reliable just like any machine which is the best friend of Man! Say computer it is mens best friend or is it not ? Well it is inanimate but in animate world dogs and horses are mens best friend as they are truthfully loyal and useful to the man There appears to be no harm in accepting this to me No doubt the best friend of the man is the man himself but they do betray and so does the dogs based on their breed To me it is not a fallacy but a statement of fact and truth The comparison appears all right but conclusions drawn are unacceptable All the best

I don't know as I can agree with this entirely. There are people who are just like you describe there is no doubt. I get along well with most people and I am far from anti-social at all. Still, when I had a dog, he was more than just a pet to me. I had real feelings toward this dog and he towards me. Dogs do tend to bond with their families.

I wholeheartedly believe that animals are very much capable of feeling and expressing love especially dogs; they are highly intelligent and very much in tune with humans. Our dog has the ability to express happiness and sadness and it is not just me seeing what I want to see. She comes to us when we are unwell and rests her head upon our lap as a gesture of comfort and this is not something she does ordinarily. I consider my dog and my cats my best friends; they communicate with me in their own way and they know me. An animal will love unconditionally whereas a lot of humans cannot. I have heard stories of dogs laying down their lives for their owner; it goes way beyond just instinct!

You got a point here and I must admit that you are to certain extent very honest and genuine, this is true that dogs cannot voice out their true opinions and we human being are again the one to impose that the dog like him or not. However as far as I know once the dog are attached to the person, it is ever faithful and always thinks of the protection of the owner. So this makes it the best friend of man as they are selfless and ever devoted to their friend, the man.

Just because they dont have speech does not mean they cant communicate. Their communication is at a level which many humans like yourself cant comprehend. Because you are a superficial communication kind of a person. And dont you know anything about the instincts of animals. It is this instinct of animals which have saved humans' lives during the tsunami which spread so much of destruction in Phuket and Ceylon. It is these dogs who are used in therapies for special people. And like humans they don't back bite. They will not say something on your face and something against you to the other. Dogs remain man's best friend.
