of course you can! BUT there's a catch to this, 1st: you need to have a software that can recover your files, 2nd: If the location of data you want to recover on your newly formatted hard already has data on it, you cannot recover the data anymore because it's been overwritten already. 3rd: Not all files can be recovered.
Okay so I know that you're dying to know how to recover the files. here's how:
1. Download or get a copy of a software that recovers data. I use hiren's boot cd but their website has a lot of cool mini apps you can download. (http://www.hiren.info/downloads/data-recovery/hard-drive/1) or try looking for open-source applications at http://sourceforge.net
Mind you, these applications don't have nice User interfaces because they're free
2. Install or run the program
3. using the program, find the files you want to recover.
I hope this helps you immensely. Happy recovering :)

There is a software called Retrieve data search for that even if you have formatted everything there is a way to get everything back again, I had done the same to my MP4 which is fine now, so try to fine it and if ever you don't then come back to tell me I will ask the friend who did it to me to tell you.
