A living will - is this good or bad?

Living Will - Do you believe in living wills?

Do you know what a living will is? It is actually document in which people make clear what health care they get and how they want to be treated if they become seriously ill and unable to make or communicate what they want. These are helpful to both relatives and to medical professionals in the case of a seriously ill and incapacitated patient. A living will is not a way to commit suicide, but it is a request in made advance to doctors not to give certain medical treatments, for example not giving resuscitation. In February this year a British poll showed that nearly half the population of Britain said that they would draw up a living will if it was easy to do so. Living Wills are actually based on the principle that we are all entitled to refuse medical treatment. It simply offers this same right to people who are no longer capable of communicating their decisions effectively. What do you think about them?

Since 2005 our law is quite the same on the other side of the Channel. If you are still able to decide, you can choose to stop medical treatment for prolonging your life, or write your choice when you are healthy. It is a terrible and personal choice. I think it is good to let each one decide. Personally I saw a member of my family paralyzed, not able to speak and dying during five years. If there is no hope of recovery, I don't want to be in the same situation...

I think they must be very hard to deal with for family members, if you have a parent or other close relative, it would be hard to watch them die when their life could be saved just because their living will said no, but if it is what the person wanted then it is only fair to allow them to have that say, but I know if it was me, and one of my family members, it would be impossible for me to stand by and watch them die when there was something the doctors could do. It must also be terribly hard for the Doctors who have to treat them, their job is to save lives not to end them, and if they know they can easily revive them and save their lives, it must be hard to live by the rules and listen to what the living will says! I think they are a good idea though in a way, if someone is in a good state of mind when they write the living will, and not been persuaded to do it, if they have somehting like cancer or another terrible illness which willk kill them in the end anyway, and they know that, then it is up to them to be able to refuse treatment, but what worries me is that they may have changed their minds since they wrote the written will, they miht have decided they want to live on and die naturally but they have this written will which cannot be legally "gone against". So it's hard to say whether they are good or bad!!! I think you need to tell your family your own views on it though, i.e. if you write a living will, you need to inform your next of kin s they know your wishes and know why you want that, so they understand and hopefully express your feelings at the hospital and ensure the doctors are aware of your feelings!!!

Hi oldchem: I'mnot sure If I would draw a living will but I respect these decitions. I think that you shouldn't be obligated to live in a situation that you find unnatural throw the limits of living. Sometimes we have to let the people go somewhere far fromus, it's sad, it's a hard decition but in some cases it's necessary. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO.

i would like to draw up a living will so that my family will not be burdened with a hard decision when i am not able to make my wishes known. i don't know how to go about preparing one in my country but my family already knows that i would not want to be resuscitated when the time comes.

Hi bevice: I think just as you said that a person have the right to decide if he/she wants to take a medical treatment or not. If his/ her life quality will be affected but a treatment and he/ she doesn't want to follow this medical treatment we can't decide for a person to keep living no matter what the cost. That would be unfair and unethical. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day. ALVARO.
