I've seen that there are a lot of people that come up with some very creative names for their pets and there are others that use names that are a little bit more sterotypical. What I'd like to know is what you named your pet and how you came up with the name that you've given them.
Us, right now we have three pets. Our oldest dog is named Michela Mae because I found her out in the country almost eleven years ago and I wanted to give her a name that is somewhat old fashioned to represent the area where I found her. Then our other dog is named Jasmine Lady Ariel. She came with the name of Jasmine and my daughter decided to keep up with the Disney theme and added the other two names to it. Finally we have our cat, Cornbread. We named him this because of his coloring.
Oh, and we are considering getting another cat and we've decided that we are either going to name it Beans or Buttercup to keep up with the food theme and the classic country meal of soup beans and cornbread.

Well where do I start. Cats: Button as she was white with two cicles either side of her with two white dots in the middle so they looked liked buttons, Sybil, black cat meaning prophetess, black cats are witches cats went well, Greebo, mucky black cat always in trouble always covered in oil fromlaying under cars, fitted well. Wilfred daughter named no reason. Bob, he had no tail lol. Rabbits Snowy was white self explanatory etc etc. we also have rabbits called Nike, Sweetheart, Rosie, Katie, guinea pig Dave (after guy in pet shop) and Badger cos he looks like one and the only fish with a name is Bluey as he is a blie siamese fighting fish and we also had Angel the hamster who unfortunaly is with the angels right now bless.

I especially like the story of Buttons although I also like the story of how you named Greebo as well. I really liked reading about all of the names of your pets.

My son would absolutely love to get a black cat, but he is determined that if we do it is going to be named black kitty.

Hi Dorann,
Your pets names are cute and unique. I enjoy reading your discussion and learning about the reasons why you give that name to your pets. Everything has its own meaning...history hehehehe. i love the name michela mae and cornbread!

For some reason I'm especially partial to Michela's name but that is probably because she is the only pet that I've ever had that I have named completely on my own. The story as to how I got her is really neat as well, but that is fit for another time.

The list is long:
Bommer - My 15 yr old dog was rescued from the SPCA. When we adopted him he was infested with mange mites and had no hair on his back legs. He looked like a big boo boo.
Thumper - Our Quarter Horse has two names. Her barn name is Thumper because when she was first foaled she would stand in the stall and kick her hind foot like Thumper in the movie Babmi. Her registered name is Sleepy Little Rose. This is a combination of her dam's name Rosadator and her sire's name, Mr. Sleepy's Man.
Bunny - Our 9 yr old hound dog. We decided to give her a name of something she would never hunt. This dog is so spoiled the only thing she ever hunts is her food bowl and a cushy place to lay down.
Delilah - Our 2 yr old papillion. She was named becuase my mother has a papillion named Sampson that we intend to bred her with and for the biblical reference since she is his downfall. Her registered name is Delilah Doodles Tax Day Delima. She was born on April 15th and we always seem to have some kind of delima in our house, so poor thing will always be a problem. LOL

I remember that cartoon, it was Tiny Toons Adventures. I used to watch that one all the time. Thanks for bringing back a good memory.

My old dog Michela is a hound dog as well. However, she has never hunted a day in her life unless you count the fact that she loves to try to catch flies. I really think that it is neat that two of your pets have had names that are related to rabbits.

When I was in high school, I had a rabbit named George. It comes from the cartoon where "I love it and squeeze it and call it Geroge." Only problem George was a she.

We have a Shih Tzu named Tacka and a native one (mixed breed) named Bossing. People really want to name pets of course. Here in the Philippines, even those native dogs have the privilege to be named accordingly. If I were to have a new native dog then I would name it Muning or Kuting which is usually given to native cats in the Philippines. lol

I think that it is important for us to name our pets. Never have I had the honor of having a purebred dog, however mine does but she isn't registered. I always thought that the registered names of dogs were kind of goofy. I really like for them to have nice, simple names.

What cute names! We have a cat called Shady and a dog called Pixie. Shady was named after Eminem (The Real Slim Shady) and because she is tortoiseshell with lots of different colours and shades in her fur. Pixie was the only name all of us liked and was after Pixie Geldof. In the past, we have had animals named after gymnasts as I love gymnastics - Nadia the cat, Olga the dog, Tatiana and Natalia the rats. We had a cat called Delgado (after Dr Who actor Roger Delgado), a dog called Katy (after actress Katy Manning), rats called Babs, Hattie and Joanie (after Carry On stars) and Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger from Winnie the Pooh!

Cool. My children were both named after people that were important in my journey to becoming the woman that I am today.

My sister-in-law's dog is named Eeyore because she is a huge fan of Winnie The Pooh. I also think that it is neat that you've named animals after gymnasts. I like gymnastics as well, both of my children are budding gymnasts. My daughter has been involved since she was three years old and my son since he was one and a half.

That's great your kids do gymnastics. My daughters did when they were younger too. I also named two of my daughters after famous gymnasts - Emilia and Viktoria!!

Thats a really cute idea how to keep them with the food theme. I dont like naming animals real people names. My parents had a dog they named Brody and it was weird because my daughter now goes to school with a little boy named Brody and it just is odd haha. We have three cats Rocky, Frodo and Shadow. My husband named Frodo from the character in the Lord of the rings movie. I named Rocky because my ex and I had just started dating and it was our first animals together. The family name is Rockwell so I named the cat Rocky. Shadow we got a few years later when my daughter was born. She followed us all around the house like a little shadow so thats how she got his name.

I have definitely noticed since we got the cat that in order to name them you really have to pay attention to their personalities. I couldn't just look at Cornbread and immediately name him, it took a few days to name him.

we used to have a dog named "Sneezle" because when she was young she always had colds and sneeze often. after her we raised a dog we named "Dark" because of his pure black color. he's gone now too. and we don't intend to take care of any more puppies. so we ended up with cats, lots of them. we have 6. and we gave them the most conventional names anyone could ever think of. in fact, it's so embarrassing to admit how uncreative we were during their births. our first cat we call "Night" because she's also colored black, our second cat's "Light" the opposite of the former, whose color is pure white. our third cat we call "Dawn" not really because of her color, which is brown, but just to complement with the other two cats names. (day = light)
Night's first baby we just called her "Little Night" (they look a lot like each other, except that the latter don't have white streaks on her neck) while the only male cat, which is also night's kid, unfortunately isn't baptized yet with any name and he's really getting old already. none survived from Light's babies. Dawn's called "Baby Dawn" (who look a lot like her mother too except her tail which is shorter, almost none at all). i don't know if it has got something to do with their names but Little Night and Baby Dawn both looked smaller than their moms.

Well, I have to admit that I really like the name Sneezle, I would never have been able to come up with something that is that creative. And, if I were to have a pet that would become a mother, I don't think that I would be able to be creative with their names.
I did once have a dog that we named Fudge because he had a little brown spot on his nose when he was just a pup. He was a baby of my aunt's multese Princess.

I try not to over think it when it comes to naming a pet. I always used to name dogs after my older brother. That's probably why he would try his best to come up with a name before I saw it. It was fun to see him react whenever I called for the dog to come get supper.

Yeah,as far as concerned, I think I just name my pet a very ordinary one . The cat pet has a name called Mimi, which just like the sound that the cat voiced out. Then I just call him mimi. When I heard the voice then I will know that my cat mimi is coming near soon. As everyone has his own character for making his pet name. But I just love the mimi so much.

I do agree with you that everyone has their own way of naming their pets. I think that Mimi is a great name and I can definitely see where you got it from. Thank you very much for sharing.

Hi, my kids were the ones who named our pets; we have three cats and their names are very familiar. The oldest cat is named Tiger and the twins is Felix and Sylvester. When we call them they readily response and they knew also their names. Tiger is named because my son loves the color of the tiger. For the two, their names were taken from the Disney characters.

It is neat to be able to allow the kids to name the pets in the house. My children did have a say in Cornbread's name and now my daughter has a list of names that we are all considering for our next cat.

Hmm. . . Swiper, Boots, Baby Jaguar. I can't think of any more of them right off of the top of my head right now. Oh, there is Alicia as well. That would be a lot of fun.

Our original dogs are Jack and Georgia. They gave us puppies whom we named Max, Bubba and Gaston. We have three cats who are named Penny, Junior (who's a girl but she kinda looks like her mom Penny) and Michiko.
Cornbread sounds like a cool name for a cat. Had I seen this post earlier, Gaston would have had that name, since he kinda has light burnt-brown color.

I'm so glad to hear that there is someone else that thinks that Cornbread is a cool name. When we had him fixed last week, his name definitely got some giggles out of the staff at the clinic.

I must admit I do love the food theme, or the idea of having a theme for pet names. We have had a number of pets over the years, all named either by my parents, myself or my two brothers. At the moment we have 4 cats - Marbles (named after her mottled, marble-style fur), Tiger (probably the least original, because of his giner fur and size), Alex (pitch black, named after a similarly pitch black cat which my mother had as a child) and Sylva (a shortened, "feminine" version of Sylvester, because of her black and white fur). Our two dogs are Sasha (an extremely mixed breed, with some doberman and border collie in her, her name was given by the SPCA where we got her) and Cooper (a miniature pincher whose farther's name is Harley, so we decided to stick with the car/bike name theme).

I had to explain to my daughter that we wouldn't be able to change an animal's name if we were to get it from the SPCA because I've always heard that it is bad luck to rename an animal after it already has a name.

I have 3 cats, Char, Simba and Zeke. Char was named thus because he's all black, and at the time my mother had an all black cat named Cole... so I thought Char would be cute... Charcoal.. get it?
We got Simba and Zeke right about the same time. Simba is an orange tiger and was really frisky as a kitten.. he just reminded me of the lion from Lion King..
Zeke is a freak.. honestly, always was, he's just weird. He'd get frisky and run up to play with you but as soon as you'd interact he'd freak out and run away, still does, so we just started calling him Zeke the Freak.
My foster mom had some weird ways of coming up with cat names. Sometimes it was their color, sometimes it was something she was into at the time. She had one cat that was a total scaredy cat and she called him a Psycho.. so she named him Norman Bates. Then when I was a teen and into french and wanted to actually go to France she got a cat and decided to name it the french word for cat, which is chat (pronounced like shot) and so that cat was named Chatsie. She also had a cat named Baby.. from Dirty Dancing. Casey was actually named Kitten Cotter (Cotter was her last name) shortened to KC.. and eventually just became Casey.

I think that the different names that people come up for black cats are the most interesting. The reason that I say this is because Paul wants to name his Black Kitty, Kathryn would name it Midnight and I personally would name a black cat Snowy just because I am twisted like that.

I wasn't very creative when i named my pet lol..I was in highschool and we were watching Romeo and Juliet..yes the one with Leo Dicaprio ..Anyways i decided to name him Romeo..He is a Pomeranian ..Now people always ask me .."are you his Juliet?" or say quotes from the movie/play..We also had a dog we named Daisy ..That was a bigger dog and passed away years ago.I didn't name her ..too young at the time

You know when I think about Pomeranians Romeo does seem like it would be an appropriate name for a male. I really like that, but I don't think that I would be the one that was creative enough to come up with asking if you were his Juliet.
