What a wonderful thing to witness new born naked babies with their mum. Totally unexpected and have rehomed all the babies now as this was a while ago but would love to share a picture of them all with you. Do you own rabbits? Do you breed rabbits. Have you ever had a shock like this with animals giving birth?

hi ellie nope as I live in a retirement center. But I have always wanted to have a lop eared pygmy rabbit. I have seen them at the Orange County fair and they are so sweet and gentle looking. I think they were quite
attractive but again we lived in an apartment so no pets of any kind. Here you may have a small dog oar a cat but it will raise your rent a hundred dollars a month. I did not have that much money so no pets.

Hi Hatley, to have a pet raises the rent by that much a month ridiculous. Here we pay our rent and the only animal we have to ask permission for is a dog but no rent increase. I have fish tanks too. Maybe you could have a small tank in the room as fish are so relaxing. Huggles Ellie :D

I don't know if the laws are different in a retirement center, but normal according to rent laws it is illegal to raise your rent for having pets. They can charge whatever they want as a deposit, but that's it. What retirement center are you in? My folks are in Leisure World in Laguna Hills. They had cats until recently. Kitties got old and passed away.

You mean, the rabbit is already pregnant when you adopt it? Do you adopt a male one as well? This is an awesome thing YA! I would love to encounter this situation. I have rabbits too and I love them! It has given birth few months ago with the male partner I adopted together.

Hi Kakashi, The rabbits wer probably about 6 weeks old then, the mother rabbit is a lop earred and yes was already prgnant when I adopted her unbeknown to me. I do have male rabbits but they are kept in separate hutches so this event will not happen again. I have kept one of the babies as she is female and still in with mum which is ok. I have almost become a rescue centre now as I have two male rabbits, three female and two male guinea pigs, so it is hard work everyday cleaning, feeding etc but I buy food by the sack which works out really economical. Well I've just commented on the lovely photo, and I decided to answer the discussion too, (just because!)
It must have been a lovely surprise to find all the new babies. Did you actually see them being born? I don't own or breed rabbits, and have never had any animals give birth. The closest I've come is when we used to have foxes living under our shed, and they produced five little cubs. We used to watch them out of the window, they were so tiny to start with, and it was lovely to watch them growing up. :)

Hi Liquorice, lovely to see you hear in this discussion as I have ben away for a while (busy with rabbits lol) I came home from work and the mum had made a nest I didn't actually see them born but will upload a pic now of them just born with no fur. Amaxing to watch them grow. Seeing foxes in the wild with their babies must have been some experience too and can imagine how lovely it was watching them grow. Huggles Ellie :D

I had a pair of rabbit, kimi and bunny and was surprised that we hear a small voice yelling. It was their first baby while the two was running. It was a happy moment to see newborn rabbit, it was like a rat. As months past they multiply and we sell the babies cause we cannot afford to take care of them all. Now we don't have rabbit, only dogs, cats and fish. I am dreaming of owning a rabbit but they I cannot maintain taking care of them cause of my work. Your rabbits are cute, I love rodents too.

Hello there! wow! that's a very good experience for you to keep. Its good that you adopted her because now, she was in good hands together with her 8 babies. According to my nephew who was so fond of taking care of different pets, rabbits was really quick to multiply and they're so sweet as well but jumps so quick and high so be careful with your things inside your home. I never owned rabbits but ive got the chance to feed some of them in my nephews house, because my nephew loves rabbit so much. No i didn't see rabbits who gave birth to her babies, wish i could see some soon so i could witness myself how this cuties were born by their mother. Goodluck!

Growing up I had rabbits. I would take them out of their cages and play with them. They were very tame. Then I found out my dad planned on making FOOD out of them so while he was at work I went out and turned all my pets loose!!!! That was back when parents believed in spanking their kids!!!!! But it was worth it, we had rabbits running loose around the farm for a long time.
My kids had pet rabbits and they were in huts outside, surprise, we did have babies. The kids played with them and they were so tame. One day they got out of their cages and into the weeds and I couldn't get them so I stood calling 'here bunnie bunnie bunnie" and they came to me!!! I got them back in their cages.
We have 2 pet rabbits now, but they are in the house. they are both males but they are neutered.

Hi Christmas, Wow you have a lot of experience with rabbits. I didn't know thi one was pregnant when I took her on. I have two males also which I keep separate but like yours all very tame and well trained. Pleased to hear that you managed to save the rabbits your dad intended on eating. Well done although I bet you were sore for a while as I grew up also when children got spanked for being naughty, like you say worth it though. Thank you for sharing. Huggles. Ellie:D

Wow! Just make sure to watch the mom. My friend had rabbits, and the mama rabbit ate a couple of the baby rabbit's heads. She just bit them off. Boy, just typing that out gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. Can you believe in some European and Asian countries, they actually eat rabbits heads? On purpose.

Hi AmbiePam, I have heard this about mummy rabbits with their young but she has been an absilutely brilliant mum and all the babies survived. They all went to good homes at eight weeks except one that I kept. I have pet guinea pigs too and I know they eat them as a delicacy in some countries an the thought makes me feel ill too. Huggles. Not with rabbits, I bought a rabbit at Easter one time and he looked lonely so I went back and bought another one so he had a friend, what a mistake that was, they are very messey animals. But they was so cute. But we had a cat and I watched her give birth so many times. It is amazing to see new life right as it is happening. And my hubby's dog that gave birth to 12 at one time, I wondered if she would ever stop having lab puppies. Birth is so beautiful no matter who is giving it.

Hi Ellie. It is lovely to adopt a rabbit but it is a very large surprise when she turns out to be pregnant. Then she gives birth to eight bunnies. It was lovely when you were able to re-home all the babies.
When I was a teenager I had a sandy and white colored rabbit called Sally. My sister had a black lop rabbit called Tiggy. We thought both were female but Tiggy turned out to be male. Sally gave birth to seven bunnies and that came as a great surprise. We found homes for two of the bunnies and kept the other five. Then my moms friend gave my mom her four rabbits.

Hey ellie! My nephew has gotten so big! Tell him is "Auntie Opal"
misses him! And those baby rabbits are too cute! I always wanted
rabbits, but my cousin had one when we were kids and they make
such a mess, (at least that's what the parents said!) I actually
wanted one of those lop-earred ones! Oh, if I had a bigger place
God knows what kinds of animals I'd have! Dogs, cats, rabbits,
llamas, pot bellied piggies! Yeah, I guess I would have a farm
thing! I just love the photo of "my boy"! It was so great to
see him! It's been such a long time ellie, and I really do think
of you guys alot! I really do miss you and can't believe how
much he's grown! Thanks for sharing the photo! Love you both, Leslie

Hi Aunty Opal, we are back lol. Missed you too, that why I just keep returning. He is 6 now so you guessed right, not so little. It is lop earred that we have but as you can see from the picture mummy rabbit is huge. I almost have a zoo, two cats, two guinea pigs, five rabbits, tropical fish and cold water fish plus at present we also have tadpoles and baby frogs in our pond so have been kept pretty busy. As long as you keep up with cleaning everyday rabbits are not messy, all are trained and use a litter tray except Nike who sleeps in his tray and messes in another corner but that fine too as still confined to one small area,. I bulk buy the food so not expensive either. Love you too. lots of big huggles from both of us. Ellie :)

Oh, the cuteness of it all! What a shame those gorgeous babies have to grow up! I read your previous responses and I learned that mama rabbit was pregnant when you adopted her and you didn’t know, it must have been one heck of a shock to find babies! My sister experienced the same thing with a stray female cat she adopted. She was completely unaware that the animal was expecting until she found four kittens in her courtyard feeding from their mother! She thought she had rats in the garden at first until she spotted mother cat! My sister is not into pets as much as I am but these babies got to her heart strings and she had a hard time parting with them!

Hi ElicBxn, That must have been a shock for you especially as she had to have c section, expensive too, but as a cat lover too can understand you manage it somehow. I love my two Wilfred and Sybil. Solo is a handsome boy. Sybils mum was a crazy cat too and when I moved she chose to stay behind with a lady down the next road who spoilt her more than I did. Huggls. Ellie :D

I buy the food in a sack so not expensive either. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi there ellie. I am guessing this was a rather nice surprise back then as adult rabbits are cute, baby rabbits are even cutter. So, what did you do with them ? I am guessing you gave at least some, if not all of them away.
How long were you force to keep them before giving them away ?
How did your son reacted when he learned that the little ones were going to new houses ?
As i read some of your answers to the other comments it got me wondering - so you kept 4 of the babies or you had some rabbits before the pregnant female ?
Huggles, Alex :P

Hi Elitess, We managed to rehome all of them except one my son got really attached to so I kept luckily she was female so is still in with mum. We did have our own rabbits already but they were male so we need to keep them separate. My son was fine with them going as they have all been homed with friends and family where we can still get to see them. Huggles. Ellie :D

I seem to remember a rat that the kids brought home as a pet, I think it had 5 or 6
For us it was not good luck, we lost all the babies, she got to cold before we even knew she was PG. I don't even remember what happened to Mama Rat I think she got rehomed to a more rat friendly household.

I have bred rabbits years ago and saw many babies. I think you were lucky here : with calm and confidence, there is no problem, but after only three days at your home the mother may have killed her babies. They are really cute ! Eight is a lot ! Do you gave some ?
