I am not sure why but i have seen my rabbit eat her babies before! Why they are so cruel? Am I not giving them enough protein that they have to obtain protein from the own flesh? Anyone encounter this before?

actually it is a common thing and it is not cruelty most famous for eating their newborns are the pigs, but i have heard the same for rabbits, dogs and mice it's not the diet you keep your rabbit - as far as i know the reasons are not found yet some say it is because something in the baby's smell tells mother the babies are strangers, not her own or that they are "wrong", ill other say it is because the babies hurt their mother and to get rid of the torture she kills them anyway, if it is possible try to take them away, keep them separated from their mommy and bring them only in feeding hours or even feed them by yourself (of course this is a little expensive) good luck :)

Glad to hear that it is common. But I still feel that's cruel... Thanks for your advise, so next time, i got to work harder when they give birth. Thanks!=)

I have heard of this before, and I've heard a variety of reasons why. But I have no idea which reason holds more truth than others. The most common one I hear is that the mother realizes there's something wrong with the baby/babies. I guess that's possible, and perhaps the mother is afraid the "sick" ones will infect the others or herself? I'm not sure. Did she eat all of them, or just a few? I've never actually seen that happen before, but I imagine it's pretty disturbing to see! Ew. :(

Wow, what a bad mommy! We've had birds do that..some lovebirds can be very carnivorous. I would say that in the future-somehow-you're going to have to handfeed those poor things!
