Is it auspicious to buy gold on akshay tritiya?

akshaya tritiya means "never diminishing". hence, it was believed that anything new started on this day will bring in prosperity. some smart jeweller somewhere discovered this day and used the meaning of the term and the legend associated with it to promote it as the day when you should buy gold. the case put forward was that gold bought on this day will lead to your gold wealth increasing for the rest of the year :). this is purely a marketing gimmick.
