I love growing my nails long and square but my nails are so brittle and keep chipping and even break right in the middle of my nail and that makes cutting the nail very difficult and painful!! What can I do to prevent my nails from breaking?? Any tips?

First of all it it a myth that eating jelly or gelatine helps - it doesn't, that is just an old wives tale!!
Here's what you can do to strengthen brittle nails.
1.Moisturise them well, Petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) or a thick, water-washable cream acts as an emollient; it holds in moisture around and under your nails.
2.If they are bad wear cotton gloves to bed and put a thick layer of petroleum jelly on your hands when getting ready for bed, then wear cotton gloves overnight. This is especially helpful in winter, when hands and nails dry out quickly.
3.Soak them in half a cup of warm olive oil15 to 30 minutes.
4.Hydrate with diluted bath-oil capsules for 5 minutes a day.
5. Beware of nail polish remover. Frequent manicures can dry the nails, because polish removers that contain acetone are drying.

I used to have a brittle nails, actually until now but with proper care I have avoided it from breaking.
I tried to avoid activities than can cause my nails become brittle.
Everytime I wash the dishes and clothes, I found my nails so weak; So I avoided it.
Manicure and pedicure destroys my nails.
Rubbing your nail with a fresh garlic can make your nail healthy and hard, that's what some people said.
I did follow it. It works.

Thanks Adeena. This is the second post that says that garlic helps. Think I'll try it out. Sounds like a simple remedy.

tangeryne I know you are not going to like this but keep them shorter as I know when mine grow longer they will break and tear in the middle too. very painful. I am told that being sure you get enough calcium will help and also take a multivitamin daily as brittle nails mean we are a bit deficient in some vitally needed elements. take a little more calcium and that might make them stronger too.

I've heard about calcium helping as well. Actually, come to think of it I think that's true. I hate drinking plain milk but when I used to go to the gym, I used to have a glass of sugarless milk and that helped cause my nails didn't break as much. I don't like keeping my nails short cause I tend to bite my nails. That's a habbit I got out of by growing my nails which was motivation for me not to bite my nails :-)

You need to eat more oily foods that give moisture to hair, nails, and bones, also you need more gelatin, which is found in Jello (tada). It is a vital ingredient in the growth of healthy hair and nails. Or you can just go for omega3 pills. But make sure to get more gelatin in your diet too. I've heard its good to soak your nails in jello too, but I am not sure about that one. You can also apply finger nail polish to help protect your nails. And a filipino trick is to rub garlic on your nails.

Where can i get gelatin and jello??? What are the sources for it?? Gelatin is used in ice creams if I'm not mistaken correct? Does rubbing garlic on your nails actually help??

I haven't tried it yet but I am hearing this long before... They said, it would help to harden nails if you pinch on fresh garlic... I have no idea what with it that hardens the nail... And I really don't know if this is effective or not cause I honestly don't let my nails grow long...
