how to get published

A few years ago I wrote a novel but I haven't done anything about it. I hope to get it published someday but I really don't know the best safest way to go aroung it. I know a lot of publisher are available on the net but I just can't seem to trust them. Whos to say they'll take the story and claim it as their own. I can't afford to pay for a official copyright so does anyone have any advice?

First of all, whenever a story is in written form, the author has retained the copyright.
Secondly, there are publishing companies that are receptive to all types of fiction. The writer has to ask what type of novel it is and what the story seeks to explain.
