How do you know when God is talking to you?

I had a discussion with my nine year old last night about how she is supposed to know what it is that God wants her to do. She was having a problem with a friend at school and said she kept trying things and nothing was working. I told her maybe she needed to stop doing what she wanted and do what God wanted. This led to a very interesting discussion on how you know what it is God really wants. She asked me why He can't just tell her himself. I explained God doesn't work like that but rather through people. We talked about reading the Bible and understanding what God wants for us that way. She left the conversation saying she would try but still seemed really confused. It is so difficult to put these things into words. Any suggestions on the best way to explain listening to God to a nine year old?

My two sons were nine year old ones and when they were very young my husband and I would tell our sons stories from the Bible and explain to them that God is sad whenever we do wrong things. Plus every Sunday, they attend Bible School for kids. If you want your daughter to know what God wants her to do, you have to read bible stories to her. Then explain to her. I would suggest that you buy Bible for kids. You can get that in any christian bookstore. Or try to buy a complete season of Flying House. It is a collection of Bible stories in animation. Also let them see you read the Bible too so they will be more encourage to read themselves. Let her know that God speaks to us through his word.

Thanks Gerry. We do attend church and she has a great kids Bible but I think the difficult thing is taking those stories and putting them into real life application. My husband and I participate in a small group at church which helps us with the real life application part but I want something for her that does the same. I will check out the Flying House series. Thanks for the feedback!
