Hi,
Yes you can directly install linux in your system. You have to delete any one of the Xp partitions (if you don't have enough unpartitioned space to accommodate linux). Linux has a different file system and it doesn't recognize windows partition. So delete a partition, check whether its a free space and install your Red Hat into it. There is another solution though. You may use Ubuntu, which is also made by Red Hat ( I think) and it integrates fine with your existing windows Xp. You can run all your linux commands in Ubuntu. It is a one CD software. All you need to do is that you have to put your Ubuntu CD in your system and select to 'Install within Xp'. Then choose a drive where you think you have enough space ready. Install the Linux and boot and then run your commands opening a terminal. You can't use any CD driven Linux as they won't support many commands and directories. Be sure to read the Red Hat manual before installing it. I recommend reading Linux Bible before installation. You may get the book from your library. Thanks
God bless you
