My friend will be a Sophomore in high school next year and he is trying to make the Varsity team. He played Freshman last year and won best defensive player I think. I gave him my input on how he needs to improve, but he was looking for more help. What do you guys suggest? He really needs to work on his shot, on ball defense, and finishing his layups. I'll relay any advice you guys give on to him. :)

Basketball is not mainly about your ability to shoot the ball to the basket or just to defend your opponent on defense. It also requires mental and physical stamina to be a good baller. A player needs to train well in stamina, so as to make him go through most physical plays the game can offer and to avoid debilitating injuries that can falter his dream of basketball or even derail his carrer for good. Do more workouts, to strengthen his body and condition him physically. A good morning run can help, some professional workouts during the day and a healthy diet will help alot. Experience can help too, he can attend some simple basketball skirmishes in some backyard courts, attend community leagues to hone his skills even more through playing. He can do some perimeter shooting, maybe some one on one games and skills game of dribbling and of the ball defense workouts. Coaches can help too, so they can assist him and teach him the very basics of the game. Basic techniques help alot specially basketball is a team game. Most of all, he needs to have the determination and will to win, because a player who cannot survive a simple beatdown will struggle in clutch moments. If he has the ability and thinking of a champion, that can fuel him to strive harder and make it to the varsity team he always dreamed of.
