Where Were You When... ?

All of us have some big news events that we remember vividly - where we were when we heard about it, who we were with, what we felt like. I would like to discuss this, as I find it fascinating that our brain chooses to "freeze" this moment, so we never forget it. For me, there are several events I remember very well including the death of British actor and comedian Kenneth Williams (who I loved), the Dunblane school shooting and the more recent 7/7 terrorist attacks on London. But the two main events are the death of Princess Diana and the 9-11 attacks. I turned the TV News on early in the morning, I was downstairs in my house with my baby daughter who always got up early. I realised by the tone of the news that something very serious had happened, then they said Diana had been injured in a car crash. Finally, it was announced she had died and I was shocked. She had seemed so alive! My Mum rang me in tears. As for 9-11, it was the early afternoon in the UK, around 2-3pm and I had the TV on and saw the second plane hit the World Trade Centre live. I couldn't understand what was happening or why. It seemed like a dream or a disaster movie. I had to pick the kids up from school at 3:20pm and it all felt surreal. When I got home, I just sat in front of the TV for hours, watching the News and unable to move, believing the US would bomb some country and we would be at war. It was terrifying.

I'll never forget 9/11 and I don't think anyone who was old enough to remember will forget it. I was at my mom's. I worked for her at the time. She always had the news on so I watched it as it happened. I came in while they were showing that the first plane had hit. I thought it was a mistake. I actually watched while the second plane hit, and I honestly still thought it was a mistake. I thought the pilot was so concerned with the first hit that he accidentally also hit a building... silly me! Obviously I was soon corrected.
My husband and I were getting our first place together at that time.. he was at our new place getting cable installed. He and the cable man both saw the news together. The cable man sat down with hubby to watch the news, lol.

I know exactly what you mean. As I watched the plane hit, I couldn't understand what was happening, I thought it was a terrible accident. I never dreamed terrorists could carry out attacks this way and then it took a while before I understood they were passenger planes.

I don't think that I will ever be able to forget the events of 09/11/2002. I was actually still in bed when the first plane hit the towers, but the second one I had turned on the television to hear the news before I headed to work. I actually saw it hit live on television as well. Then some of the other things that went on that day I was at work at the time at a pharmacy which I was working at through the temporary agency. As far as other newsworthy events that have happened in my life, I haven't been as impressioned by any of them.
