Hey everyone!
I just had an amazing idea for a business!!! Should i share it with you??=p
Anyways... the question this discussion covers is:
Have you ever had a "great" idea thinking and believing this idea would actually grow into something one day... Do you usually tell someone about it? Or do you
keep those great ideas to yourself because you're scared someone might steal it. I usually try to hold it to myself but of course you do want to know if others think its a great idea as well, so i usually tell people who i trust and check for confirmation. I don't of course share the idea on my Facebook or something like that because then someone that i don't know might take that idea and make it reality before i do. So, whenever you have an amazing idea do you share it, keep it to yourself, or do you tell people after you've fulfilled your idea completely?
Feel free to share any "ideas" you've had or have (if its not a secret anymore), i'd love to hear them!=p

Hi Barkeybark,
Uhh I have to admit to being very curious about your big idea now. If I hear that anyone has a big idea I am always hugely curious to know what it is because I don't usually have any of my own
I can get quite a few small ideas which I normally keep to myself. Generally I don't like to share my ideas because if I don't then manage to fulfil them I feel like a fool for having them in the first place. Normally I will tell the idea after I have managed to do it so I can maybe prove my commitment and get a pat on the back or something! If I fail I am also sometimes inclined to share what happened as a warning to other people, or because it probably helped shape something about my personality which I feel it important to tell people about.
But yea if I ever get a big idea I would probably tell close friends, and then swear them to secrecy. I wouldn't tell just anyone though, only those I could trust not to completely my invention before I have! I would probably also tell people I need to help me make it work since I am not very scientifically minded or anything, so I would need help bringing anything decent to fruition!
All the best and here's to hoping your idea makes you rich and famous one day lol

So you will not tell us this great idea... What was all about at all? This is pointless for me. "I have an awesome idea, but I just tell you, that I have It and I will not tell you about it"... This is ridiculous.

Yes! When ebay first started my husband and I started buying and later selling on the site. Everyone would ask me to help them list there items for sell, and I told my husband we should start a business listing other peoples stuff on ebay for them. He didn't like the idea. Now I see these signs "We sell your stuff for you on eBay" and it makes me sick! I had that idea about ten years ago, and now their is a full global business making a killing...I missed the boat because I didn't just do it on my own. Don't make the same mistake that I did, if you have an idea, get busy and don't let other people tell you a thing about it!

Awww... I've had a similar situation... My idea was to make a Facebook or a social network site for Companies and small businesses... I even started making the layouts and even content and so many ideas on how companies could help eachother and keep eachother updated through a facebook sort of... after 3 weeks of working and dreaming and thinking about it... i even told 3 people about it asking them to even become part of the deal... I was willing to pay IT people to create it for me... was gonna take out a loan etc......... and then i saw on the news... this guy who supposedly was the original creator of Facebook and claimed the Mark Zuckerberg stole his idea... was already making a similar website... They were interviewing him about Facebook and what he was currently doing now since he lost Facebook... and he said he was building a new site which will be revolutionary... for the business world... and guess what... he ended the interview with... Interviewer: What is this new website you are building about? the guy says... "well... its similar to Facebook... except its for BUSINESSES"........... and i was devastated.... I was too slow i said to myself... i kept trying be positive... but then i thought that i had no chance to compete with some geek who claims he was the true inventor of Facebook... So kept myself positive and happy that at least i know it was a great idea and my ideas are on track... if you know what i mean... So yea, thats my story... even thought my friends had ratted out my idea=p hahaha i'm joking, but who knows....=p Anyways, hopefully you'll get more great ideas and remember that there are tons of opportunities out there.. infinite... and any idea can be great.. you'll never know until you try it and really succeed=) ouuu made me think of a new discussion!;) Thanks for sharing Stefani Clayton!

The only people I do tell is my hubby, son or step children as I do trust them that they are not going to step over me and steal away my ideas. If anything my hubby will support me and probably help me get things started as he always does. Not that I've ever come across anything sucessful like you said would grow into something big but just small projects or money making things.
I would not tell anyone except the people mentioned already, wait for it to publicize, listen to what people think about it by hearing their comments, then admit it was my idea.
Take care

Yea family is always good to trust! Especially your partner in life, hehe. So you admit that it was your idea IF they comment positively on it?=p I'm joking, the way you would do it is a good idea; start from small group to the rest after it is publicized;)

If I have an idea which would help a friend but would be no use to me, then I would tell them. If I have an idea which would help me and a friend then I admit that I will use it before I tell anyone about it. At the end of the day, if the idea is mine, then I think that it is up to me to use it and reap the potential rewards from it.

Ideas that would help others would of course be good to tell them!=) The idea is always yours and hopefully the do create rewards in the end! I guess if you want the reward all for yourself it would be up to you to keep it to yourself...

I have a friend who co-manages a business we put up. I always tell him ideas if ever i come up with something and he does the same. He's a friend but when it comes to business we always split it in half. No friendship issues are present in our mini business.

Wow thats very impressive! Your friendship must be really strong and you also have substantial trust for each other which is amazing! I have a similar relationship with my girlfriend, we talk about ideas all the time even the secret ones=p

hi there barkeybark.
interesting topic you have here. =)
well, at times when i have a unique (well, whenever i feel that they are), i am quite hesitant to share em unless i did something with my idea to make it my own. hehe. i know this sounds kinda selfish, but whenever you have a great idea you want it to be known as yours.
i've had so many good ideas, both work related and non-work relate ideas, and shared them to other people. but when my idea is appreciated, i don't get the credit.
there was one time i did a pretty good job at work. i was asked to write a module. however, it is not copyrighted. it was impressive. and when other people started using it, they made it their own. when my boss asked who initiated such work, one of my co-workers took the credit. i asked her what were her resources and materials, she just bluffed her way out. it kinda hurt me because i spent sleepless night just to make my idea come to life. and all i got was someone stealing the proper credit.
i dont wanna be selfish, but when i know i have an idea that will be big, i opt to keep it to myself first. do something about it. make sure i get a little recognition (not appraisal) for what i've done..and finally share it.
it is a nice feeling sharing what you know to others. it's just you have be a little guarded on how soon you make it know. =)

Hi barkeybark..
I have watched the movie Extraordinary Measures by Harrison Ford and Brandon Frasher.. The story line is that Brandon has his kids with POMPE disease where the muscles cant burn the sugar and cant or something like it and it causes internal organ enlargement and it includes the heart. Harrison Ford as as a research doctor had an IDEA to cure POMPE but never really made it as a usable medicine because of the fact that his pride dont want anybody's hand on his research.
So thats the idea. Sometimes it's better to share the idea. But sometimes someone might steal it from you.
By the way Brandon Frashers kids in the movie recovered from POMPE because of Harrisons research. Hihihi

hello barkey,
Just the right time you started this discussion. Whenever new ideas came in my mind especially about business,I usually tell someone like family & relatives what they think about it. Few months ago I have actually this great idea of starting a small business, told my aunt about this in the presence of some relatives. Then I have to go out of town for few days & decided that when I'm back I will start that small business only to find out that a relative of mine already started it,all the ideas that I have.Well I just leave it all,let them do it,now I found out they stopped doing it.I actually started a small business again not telling anyone but then a cousin of mine saw it & just a few days ago, another cousin ask me if how is it doing as he wanted also to do it as well.Well,it actually don't matter to me since everyone is free & entitled to do anything but can't they think of anything else instead of waiting for others to start it & steal the idea.
