Realism vs. cartoony antics?

I saw a commercial yesterday for a racing game called Blur. They were making fun of games like Mario Kart, which feature cartoon graphics, and unrealistic gameplay.
I started thinking...What's wrong with that? Most gamers grew up playing games that didn't have an ouch of realism. NBA Jam still has a place in peoples hearts for it's over the top dunks, and crazy announcer shouter "He's on FIRE!"
My question is, Do you prefer realism in video games, or do you like the unrealistic stuff better? Have you ever refrained from playing a game because it wasn't a simulation? If so, why?

It doesn't matter to me honestly. However, I thought Blur had some very unrealistic things in the game itself as well. From what I know the cars can get power-ups in the game just like in Mario Kart, so I'm confused as to how that's supposed to be realistic. Of course, graphics are going to get better as technology progresses but Blur will not be able to be what Mario Kart was in its time. It may do well, but Mario Kart is Mario Kart. =D

It would be somewhat ironic is Mod Nation Racers(highly customizable kart racing game) ends up outselling Blur. If the gameplay is similar, but games choose the game which doesn't look real, that commercial is going to end up looking just plain silly.

I've seen that advert and it annoys me too, paticularly the bit at the end where the pink thing says its not about the winning and the other character hits him. Gives out the wrong message if you ask me!
Personally I tend to prefer the more unrealistic games as they are easier to play (and therefore master) and are often more fun to play with other people, Mario Kart being a prime example. I find that alot of realistic driving games tend to be difficult to master I guess because they are so 'real'. However, I am willing to try anything and wouldnt be put off buying any game other than for the reason of it being truely rubbish!

I've heard of the video game blur but was not aware that it was making fun of video games such as mario kart. Really I don't care as I play both types of video games. I like the realistic looking video games for intense game play but the simulation or cartoonish type video games for refreshment purposes.
I mean really I am a huge fan of simulation type video games, but I also like the real looking games especially for shooter or racing. Of course, I also LOVE mario kart for the wii...

it depends, but there are a place for both for example, the game shem mue if they did it unrealistic, cartoony then it will be different. But if they did super mario as relealistic as possible then its not the same as the game that we love.
