Burning Dried Leaves to Grow Mangoes

Philippines

Hello lotters, I noticed for last few months my mom would clean up the dried leaves, put it in one container and then burn it but with out the fire, just to pour out smoke. i told my mom it isn't allowed, she told no one cares because they do the same. And then she mentioned that spouting smoke under the tree will allow mangoes to grow flowers then turned into fruits. I didn't believe her at all until i saw bunch of flowers growing in mango tree. since then i've been burning leaves too. when they're not around

I can help you with this one, i have the scientific explanation for this, So our objective is for the Mangoes to start budding ( 1st stage of fruit bearing) How do we make the tree start to Bud. Its not entirely the smoke, by smoking the tree you are actually imposing certain amount of stress to the mango tree, The STRESS is what induces the trees to bear flower, yes smoking has been an an age old tradition in Mango Management but later studies reveal that by an appropriate application of stress on these tress induces bud break / flower formation. If you want your trees to bear fruits more efficiently, you need to put organic fertilizer at a rate of 2 bags per tree. and this should be done before the onset of rainy season.

hello there, No wonder the mangoes aren't as attractive as they look. unfortunately, the tree's bottom is cemented because we supposed not to have a live mango tree because our relative poisoned it but it didn't work so now instead of waiting for a few months, my mom would obviously make a smoke on the tree. but i would seriously take your advice here. thanks\

Thanks for the BR my friend, you just remember you have a friend who operates mango plantation. Its not the right time for the mangoes to be bearing fruits or flower right now, nonetheless if you got them already, might as well take care of it.

hi letran I think you are in the Philippines right? don't they have laws about burning things poluting the air like we do in the USA? anyway does smoke really do any thing for the mango trees? oh how I envy you as mangoes in our markets are so expensive and how I love them so.I cannot figure out the smoke works but maybe it does. wish you could use slip a few mangoes thru the net to me. he he ha ha. I will fall for them and pay the price but wish they were not so greedy with the cost.

Hello Hatley, Well, they DO have laws now but the good thing now a days is that no one cares and the government is not that strict and that's a problem too because others are doing it. the cost with the mangoes i believe it's too high here but i think it would be just a dollar there.i think.

Yeah even my folks back in the province does that. But my Grandma has a better explanation on smoking them besides making the tree grow flowers it also is a good insecticide because if there are any insects staying in the tree they will be driven away by the smoke thereby encouraging the tree to bloom flowers plus the fact that it emits carbon dioxide that plants need to release oxygen in the air. But I guess by law it is now prohibited but I guess that remains a law to this day since there is no one that imposes it. You go to the provinces this is still being practice by many when they are cleaning their surroundings. Dried leaves and grasses can easily be eliminated by burning them than just allowing them to degrade in time.

Well I guess burning of leaves is not really harmful to the environment I think. What is harmful is when we burn it together with plastics and other chemicals with it. Nice picture you have in there BTW.

Hello Rsa, That's another fact there my friend, it does slow the regeneration of so many mosquitos in the area. we have have some plants but it's a problem when mosquitos had started living in the plants, they get it in your way of start sucking the blood out of you. besides, it's also clogging the drainage.

maybe the smoke has some properties that fertilize the mango tree. but, please don't burn to often. the pollution emitted will eventually destroy our ozone layer and we don't want that to happen.

Gloryacam, Yeah, there's a law now that fordbids the burning of the leaves, you know am glad now that the hole in the ozone layer had slowly closing, it was big before. the one thing that should stop are the smokes coming from factories, vehicles, and smoking.

yeay! I hope they ban smoking as well...oops sorry for the smokers, but, really smoking just destroys your health, other people's health and the environment. Well, there is a law where smoking is banned in certain places, but, sometimes it is not being followed.

Hello asm, that's your choice, but i hope you don't get caught or no one would complain because i am sure some one will. make sure your neighbors aren't around when doing so.

I have many mango trees behind my house. Due to the recent drought season, the trees are not flowering that much. I will try to burn dried leaves to encourage flowering. But open burning is also forbidden here.

hello zandhi, well, burning leaves can cause irritation to your neighbor, just like the other night when some one else was burning leaves, i couldn't sleep. my nephew and niece were sleeping together with my mom, all had asthma problems, i checked on them, not a damn problem. if it's against the law there, better now do it.

I um actually have no idea about this and if it actually works. What I can say is that mango trees requires certain conditions for the tree to properly grow and if this works then by all means go right ahead and burn dried leaves. But I always though that dried leaves act as good manure or organic material when they rot? Does anyone know if this is true of not?
