Hollow Block Housing In The Philippines

I realize that hollow blocks are used for housing because of the termites that eat lumber houses. However, I found hollow block houses to be very hot inside and uncomfortable to live in especially to sleep on a hot night. Is there an alternative to housing that would be more comfortable do you think without the expense of running air conditioning.

Yes, there is. A friend of mine was just building a new mall as a business and he let me enter into the building and explained to me about what they are using. They are using the some-what hollow blocks look a like, but I forgot the name. They are using it to conserve air conditioning. It is not a hollow blocks. It is longer and larger than the hollow blocks but it is much cooler than the hollow blocks. It is way more expensive though, I think you can buy it at a hardware store in Manila, just ask.

Yeah, trees can help making the air around the house cooler. The more trees you have, the cooler it will be.

Unfortunately using lumber is a very expensive way to construct your house besides having a very hard time finding a good lumber these days because those good old trees are nowhere to be found in the country anymore. You can try bamboo house instead if you want a much cooler house but I guess it would be a bit uncomfortable and when times like typhoon and heavy rains come in during the rainy season. You house would be the first to be toppled easily by strong typhoons that we have.

Using hollow blocks in building houses is not only to avoid termites but also to make the house more durable and typhoon-resistent. Philippines is a typhoon stricken country and cement houses is better than those made of woods which is easily destroyed by typhoon.

Our house is actually made up of lumber and hollow blocks. Your right that most of us would prefer using hollow blocks because of these termites. well, during hot season it's really hot inside the house but in our house it wasn't that hot because we have a lot of windows in every room so when we really feel to have a fresh air we simply open the windows but I guess places like Manila wouldn't dare do it since the air in their place is already polluted.
