I bought this book for 50p from the market and I have to say it's one of the best historical novels I've read in a while. It's about a Roman legion that was 'lost' in the time of Julius Caesar, before he was Emperor of Rome and it tells the story of twins who were born slaves and the people who touch their lives as they grow up. The female twin is sold to a brothel when their mother is killed by their owner and her brother is sold to to a gladiatorial school. He is taken under the wing of one of the best gladiators in the school and they end up escaping and joining the Legion which later becomes lost hence how the story follows their adventures. In the meantime his sister becomes one of the most popular girls in the brothel and she manages to become the mistress of Brutus, Caesars' best friend because she is convinced that Caesar may be their father, although their mother never knew his name. It's really well written and although it's quite a thick book, it's very hard to put down. Have you read it? What did you think of it?
