Curious about the economy in your area

You watch the news and you hear about things happening around the world and in the good old USA. Most is not good news, however. But my curiousity has the best of me and want to know if the economy is picking up any in your area. You hear the recession is over, but is it really! There is still a lot of people out of work! My city for example, there are jobs, if you want to call them that, no punt intended, but I do not see an economic change. Maybe because we are the last to get hit here in the midwest. I hope that I get some responders to this discussion because I really want to know how the economy is in other parts of the USA.

The economy is starting to recover somewhat on the east coast but it is a slow road. If you follow closely what they are saying about the state of the economy and read between the lines on job recovery, you can figure out that new jobs are still about 12-18 months out before we see a big difference. I have been following CNN and what I have understood from them is that once the recession is declared over, then new companies will start to form to replace some of those that were lost. Once the new companies start forming then they have to go through all of the legal stuff to be set up and incorporated. Then they can finally start hiring some people. And this can take anywhere from 18-24 months to happen. So since they are claiming that the recession ended slightly after the start of the new year then we will hopefully start seeing new jobs soon.

I have heard some of this and patience is not in some of these people who have been out of work so long. I feel for them Our local station will have free viewer spot interviews and heard that some of them actually was offered a job. YaY! I am going to be among the unemployed here in 37 days but I think that I will not have too much trouble finding something, but then on the other hand if I was to stay I probably could get one right away, but I decided this was my chance to move back home to Oregon and I know it is picking up some, but not very fast. Scares me some, but love challenges and will find something until I find what I actually want.

Thats the right attitude to have Karissa. If more people were willing to accept something for less for a little while then they would be able to advance and find something that would suit them better. Why is it that when you have a job it is easier to find something else; yet when you are unemployeed getting an interview is even hard. It is funny how that works out some times.

I think things are picking up. Well, they actually started calling people back to work about a year ago. There are still some people that are still out of work, so it isn't nearly back to where it was. Plus, there are a number of people who aren't making quite as much as they were making before. I guess we fall into the underemployed category.
However, a lot of people are working overtime. I think that the companies are afraid to hire (or call back) too many people, so instead of doing that, they are just working the people really hard.
And right now, no one is going to complain. Everyone I know who has a job just feels really lucky to be employed. So a lot of people are working extra hard, working extra hours, and hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
It sounds like things aren't too bad in your neck of the woods, but they could be doing a little bit better. I hope the economy turns back around sometime in the near future.

Very well put. The dreadful rumors but it is also my hope that when they say it will be a year and a half to two years before things get back to the way they were or close enough to it, one can only hope. But since I just lost my job and June 30th is my last day it will be a challenge on the West Coast right now with jobs. I am not afraid, I will find something, but one thing, I will be moving back home after 15 years. Good luck to you, kykidd

Hi KarissaAngel I am in California and if there is any change in the damnable economy I sure have not seen it. there are a few jobs but too many out of work people to really help much. My son is out of work still for one and a half years a computer programmer with loads of experience but the few hiring will of course pick the kids just out of college, damn it makes me so furious.since when is a lot of experience a bad thing, a man of 50 still needs a job.this whole economy broke up our home, we, my fifty year old son and me his 83 yr old mom got evicted cause we ran out of funds after he was laid off from his job, now I am in a retirement center paid for out of my social security and SSI check,. he is in gov. sponsored apt with three other men all looking for jobs. When My son get a good job then I will think maybe the economy is changing for now no way.

I agree, once your son, as well as, the thousands of other people get jobs then the economy is better. I am not fearful but a bit hesitant on how long I will be unemployed also considering I am heading to the West Coast this July. My Mother says it is still not that good but I probably can find something. I will do the temp agency for a while and if I am jumping around, well, it is better than nothing I guess. But I hear on the news everyday how people have been out of jobs for more than a year. Sure they are taking those college students because they are intern and are offered less money. They will take it because they are just as scared of the economy and want to stay living on their own, that is if they stayed on campus away from home all this time. I do feel for you, I must say, it is so hard to hear of others in worse shape than myself. But I thank you for sharing and hope you are keeping your chin up as much as you can. Your in my prayers.

I live in south Florida and we've been pretty hard hit by the recession. Our main industry is tourism, which is down because less people have the money to come here for a vacation. The real estate market is very bad here, home building and other construction projects are few which has put a lot of people out of work.

I come from the Philippines and at present time even do we have a new president still nothing seems to brighten up in the horizon. Still many jobless fresh graduates...looking for jobs that is nowhere to be found. Maybe if the new President will do the hard work in weeding out the corrupt officials in the government then things might change.
Some of the money of the taxes coming from the people where landing inside of the pockets of those corrupt politicians and thus hampering the livelihood projects and other health related projects for the people. Our economy is far from healthy
and I can't just lost hope.

If the recession is over someone neglected to inform Mississippi. Jobs are still next to impossible to find (well occasionally a nursing job will pop up) and to make matters even worse the oil leak is costing us even more jobs. About the only thing that could make the economy any worse around here would be fore a hurricane to hit now on top of everything else. *knocks on wood* suffice it to say it is still a long way away from recovery.

I do feel for the people who have posted on my discussion, but Rysonia, I just cannot believe what your state has gone through the past few years. I have a penpal friend that lives in Mississippi near the coast range. I totally agree that we are a long way off. Right now the government don't have their priorities straight.

Well I am not in the US I am in Spain and things here are pretty bad. Over the next couple of months all of our bills are going to rise becasue there is an increase of 2% on taxes and our electricity suppliers is adding an extra 8% to the bills too. There is not much work around and I know many people who have gone off back home.

Yes, I have heard internationally the economy is not that great. I am glad you did respond as I know I was mentioning USA but I am glad to hear outside of this country also. We are all feeling the economy no matter where we reside.

I am in the UK and the cost of living has risen tremendously... the goverment has now changed, and so they are changing certain things, as you may know, our country is in so much debt, and so therefore the new goverment is trying to work out ways in which they can pull back this debt. But I fear that this is going to affect us badly in the long run. They will end up taking away things that we get in order to survive, and it is quite worrying what their plans are going to be. I think there are things that could be done, without affecting us, but the truth is the goverment will not listen, and will do what they want.
