What do you grow in a garden?

Some people raise ornamentals, others use their garden space as a way to increase their food supply. They can and freeze things that they grow. It has been a long time since I had a good garden, but this will be the year, I think. I buy some things as plants ready to plant and other things I raise from seed. I am trying to use up old or saved seeds. I have Asparagus beans and tendergreen beans and radishes and winter onions that are growing already. Oh, and some leaf lettuce. I have tomato and pepper plants that I bought and should have a great variety of them. Of course, I have weeds as well. Especially since I was away for ten days and it rained and was warm. I planted pumpkin, two kinds of squash and cucumbers today.

I see you have some things that come back every year. That is so nice. I would like to have rhubarb, but I read somewhere that we get too hot for it.

I have only accidentally grown pumpkins in the past from my compost. They did great. I planted some seeds I saved from a few years ago. I got them from a white pumpkin. I sure hope they grow.

I have been too lazy to plant a garden so far. I think I still have time if I start soon. I have to make a garden from scratch though and I have not gotten a shovel to help with that yet. My son wants watermelon and my daughter wants tomatoes. I want cucumbers. IF I ever get around to it.

The pots do dry out quicker. I have not had any black basil in a long time. It used to come up like weeds at my mom's house.

Due to the nature of my physical status I only grow in pots. I have tomatoes in pots, squash in pots and strawberries.
I would do more but with a hubby that is an invalid I can't.
My daughter in law is bringing me a few seeds for okra.
Truth is there a veggie stand not for from here and truthfully it's easier to buy the food.
But love to grow ! Especially tomatoes :)

I just got around to planting my flowers last weekend and yesterday I put some vegetable seeds in the ground--corn, romaine lettuce, peas, green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers and scallions. I can hardly wait for the beans and peas! I love peas and wouldn't you know, they are high in calories and carbs compared to other vegetables!

It is almost too late for peas here, as they like cooler weather. We are beginning to have temperatures in the 90's. My first garden I ever had I planted Mid May. We can actually put some things, like peas, out right after St. Patrick's Day.

Well, we had frost right up until May 14th! I should have planted at least a week ago but I've been so busy lately. I hope things go well for my beloved peas!

I would love to have a garden. I used to have a herb garden just outside my back door and we had a vegetable garden. I would love to grow english cucumbers, ornamental lettuce, cherry tomatoes, green peppers and strawberries. I used to have strawberries that were so plentiful I had them from Spring to late Summer. Yum!

I think it would be great for you and your granddaughter. I know at rentals sometimes you cannot. What is an English cucumber, and how is it different from the others?

Yes, it would. I wish I had the money for seeds, soil and planters. And the energy to take care of them. English cucumbers are longer than the regular ones and have a thinner skin. I dislike the thick skin. I think they have a bit of different flavor too.

I haven't had a garden here since daddy passed away in 1985. Mother never did care for all the hard work involved. I feel kind of embarrassed saying this but I never have known how to plow up the land to have one. I remember I planted some cantaloupes one time when we had a garden and they turned out so good! It sounds like you really are going to have a good one this year.

We rent a rototiller. I have not had a lot of luck previously, at this house, but the last five years I have been building up my garden space. I also bought top soil. Then I did like Grandpa Bob and put a tarp over it for a month or so. It only took a little bit of rototilling to get it dug up. There is a hand tool called a garden claw that will tear up the soil really well if you start by killing out the grass with a tarp.

What I grow in our garden were basically all flowers and plants. We live on the second floor and we actually do not have much space to plant something like for those who lives in the ground floor or those who own a house with a garden space for a small plantation vegetables or even flowers. But if I have bigger space, i would like to grow some Tomatoes and even oranges. However, oranges were few and does not really live because of the weather. I also love to plant some vegetables like eggplant and squash. I hope to get a bigger place for planting when we move to zürich.

Growing does take space, and the right climate. Oranges would not live outside where I am either.

I like flowering plants.
But if only i will have a bigger place or space to plant or a garden,i would like to raise some vegetables too.
It is always nice to cook fresh vegetables and seeing what i've grown from my own hands makes me so happy.
I remember when i was a kid, back to my hometown, where my grandfather has a big space for gardening.
He plants vegetables and i love watching it grows from a seed.
I wish to have my little garden.
You are so lucky to have some space for gardening my friend.

strawberry plant should increase very quickly and are very good especially in different shakes and strawberry cake. If I had me a garden I only grow strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and chilli, and of course I would plant many fruit trees because I love fruit, they are natures candy.

I just stick to having flowers in the garden. We have everything form roses and lavvender to jasmine and aloe vera varieties. i do love a pretty garden but I would like to perhaps grow some vegetables. I have greon herds before, but I suppose vegetable gardening would be a litte more difficult and time consuming.

I think it all depends on how big a garden you grow. Herbs are very healthy and tasty as well.

Your gardens all sound delicious.... I have been a student this year and I let my garden slip and it got a bit weedy! Now that my exams are over I have planted some radishes, beans and peas and I have had onions and garlic in since November. This weekend I plan to put some salads in. Nothing tastes as good as fresh food from the garden! (And I am very bad at growing ornamentals, vegetables seem to work better)

Growing your own food is such a healthy way to live. I hope your studies went well. It is interesting to see how the climate varies all around the world as far as planting goes. Welcome to MyLot, and we all sure hope you enjoy yourself here.

You seem to have green fingers GardenGerty. We had a very bad winter so we have to start the garden from scratch again this year. Our rubharb was saved from the frost so that is beginning to flourish. I have mostly trees and shrubs growing in the garden and just a few lettuce plants, also some spring onions and a few herbs. I'm hoping to get a few cabbage plants this weekend so fingers crossed that the fine weather we have had for the past couple of weeks will stay with us for a while. I would love to try growing a pumpkin but I am not sure that we would have the proper soil for them. Must check it out.

I do not know if you could grow pumpkins there or not. I stumbled on a blog by a guy north of London who is growing Butternut squash, and he has three years worth of pictures and details. I would think that they require the same conditions as pumpkins as they are closely related. Our winter was wet, but the cold left soon enough our fruit trees did not get frozen this year. I will post about the trees next.

There is absolutely nothing better than home grown. I am not a big potatoe fan. I do eat potatoes often but in small portions, I need to cook them almost every day my brother in law is Irish and a huge potatoe fan. I live in an apartment and not able to garden due to health. Lsast year my friend came by and she brought some vegetables from her garden. She brought potatoes and I cooked them all since there were only a few and I thought this way I'd have lots to make pan fries and even a small salad. Well let me tell you those little potatoes didn't last long enough to see a salad. My brother in law looked up from his plate and said it's good to see you eat, I have never seen you eat so much potatoe these are so good and right he was. I love radishes but couldn't grow them they got worms every time. My favorite home grown is Potatoes, carrots, radishes, leaf lettuce, peas and turnips. My all time favorite is leaf lettuce. I wash it good spin all the water out then mix it with a little vinegar, little salt and a little olive oil OOOOHHHH La La. lol

I used to have a friend on here who grew a few things in large pots. I know that baby new potatoes are just the best. I may plant potatoes next year. I have a friend on another site who says she puts them on top of the ground to plant and just builds up leaves and cut grass over them.

Oh how I love to garden, or I should say, use to love to garden! That's one thing I hate about apartments, not much to do, and I don't have a patio or balcony here either.
I wish I could come over and help you weed, haha, get some sunshine and fresh air, sounds good to me. We'd have fun too.
Eggplant is always easy to grow too if you like it, yummy. Did you ever have fried green tomatoes, mmmmmmmm? I love those too.

It is good you are able to garden with your daughter. The narrow garden is easier to work, I think. I do not have a size, but I can stand and reach the middle of the garden from each side with a hoe. I have not tried any kind of cantaloupe or melon in a long time.

The veggie garden is in at our house too. We put in green beans, onions, radish, brussel sprouts, cabbage, squash (2 varities), pepper (4 varities), lettuce, kale, beets, spinach and tomatoes. Luckily we have gotten just the right amount of rain to keep things going and the temperatures have cooperated. Already there are tomatoes and squash on the vines and the cabbage, lettuce and onions are ready for harvesting.
My mom does most of the work in the garden at my house and she also has one at her house. She was able to retire this year so she really enjoys getting out and growing things. It is so nice to have fresh veggies and not have to pay an arm and an leg for them.

I just put squash and cucumbers out today. I always had heard that the ground has to be warm enough or the seeds rot. I have peppers and tomatoes on plants. I am so looking forward to them.
