I was given the most gorgeous kitten on Monday and really need to know what I need to do. Of course she has her litter box, a few toys (although she seems to like a finger run around the side of the couch best :) ), food and water.
I realize she will probably needs shots, etc., she is 8 weeks old. When should I take her and what should I ask for?

One of the biggest things to look for is whether this kitten has feline leukemia. It is not harmful to humans but can hurt other cats if you have more animals. Call your local vet and ask them when the kitten should have shots and be tested. If it is a female cat, when you have her fixed, try to find a vet who will only take the uterus and not the ovaries too. This gives the cat a better chance for a longer life without getting pregnant.
In the meantime, I use "Neuman's Own" brand canned cat food for the little ones (about 4-5 flavors to choose from, all organic, found at Wal-Mart (best price) or local health food stores, larger cans not the small ones, $1.38 per can at Wal-Mart more at local health food store, our cats love all flavors except the one with extra vegetables). As the kitten gets older switch to their version of dry cat food for senior and active cats. The dry food will always help to clean tartar off of their teeth. You will find that feeding your cat a good nutritional food like this brand (the best I could find without making my own) keeps the cat at a perfect weight without having to put the cat on a diet. Try not to feed the cat a lot of table scraps. Most human diets are bad enough for them least way giving foods to a small animal that will see a bad affect even sooner.
To avoid fleas, add Nutritional Yeast (NOT BREWERS YEAST) to the kittens food about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon to the larger can of cat food. This gives kitty a good amount of B vitamins and fleas won't attack her. I also use nutritional yeast in our human diet so that fleas won't bother us either.
Love your kitten and spend time with it. Enjoy many years to come of a wonderful relationship with a healthy pal.

did someone gave het to you? if she looks healthy then there's no hurry. but any time is ok to take her to a vet. i don't know when would her first vacciens be recomended to be applied... but she'll surely need some. the best is to take her to a vet and ask if shes ok in weight and general health. the vet will advise what else u need.
