It was Special Needs day at Cedar Point

My son goes to public school. He is in a multi-handicap classroom. They had planned a trip to Cedar Point for yesterday. My son, had surgery a year ago and had rods put in his back. The school aides use a lift to get him out of his chair at school, so I inquired on what they intended to do with him at the amusement park. They said that they would put him on a few rides, but my husband and I figured he would not get to ride at all. The only thing that a wheelchair can go on is the big paddleboat.
My husband and I decided to take my other son out of school and go with them. Bryan had been to other amusement parks and loved riding. My husband took off work and we all went. It was a great day. He rode lots of rides. The school also gave us the aide that he would have had at school. It made it so nice. They were not real busy and the three of them lifted him on and off rides, while I held the wheelchair in place so they could get him back in it. He had a ball. We had decided to make it a great day for him, as I am guessing it is probably the last time that he will get to go and do this. His brother will be 18 next April and I know we cannot do it alone. I took pictures of him on a lot of the rides.
We went back to the car to go home and gave him a sandwich, within 10 minutes of finishing that, he was out like a light. He slept the rest of the way home, which was about an hour. He stayed up about two hours when we got home and was in bed again. He slept all night and we had an awful time getting him to get up for school this morning.
I am so glad that we were able to go, and give him a great time. The other kids that were in wheelchairs, rode one ride and that is all. Most of the time, when you seen them, they were sitting under trees, in the shade.

I am so glad that you guys took the day to help him have special memories. It is hard to do much when you have a person in a wheel chair. Even when staff want to help them. It sounds really memorable for you all.

You know, it is hard, and I don't blame the staff for not wanting to do it, but I do feel that if they did not want to, there were many other places that everyone could have enjoyed. I just don't think that they should choose places where only a small number of the kids will enjoy themselves.

I don't know about Cedar Point, but it sounds like a fun place. Plus by your discussion, sounded like your son had a fun time. You know they had fun when they sleep on the way home and are still tired the following day. I wonder why the other kids in wheel chairs only got to go on one ride. Still, glad to hear that he had a blast. I'm not much of a theme park kind of person, I must be getting old.

I'm so glad your family got to do this! I remember going to Cedar Point decades ago, I was still in middle school--man, over 30 years ago!! It's nice for kids to be able to do things like that, it's so much fun. You really tired him out and I'll bet he hasn't slept that soundly for awhile! That's the best kind of sleep.

I tried to add an image, but it would not let me. I hope we did not overdo it, as he barely moved this morning.

How nice that you were able to go along and help your son so he could go on the rides. It's sad that they hadn't made better arrangements for all the kids to enjoy it like that.

hi throughrob you just made me feel ashamed of my self for worrying about my own son. We forget that everyone has problems and some a lot bigger than others. I am so glad you all got to go a nd your son
had a ball as he surely deserves it. good luck to you and your
and thanks for reminding me we all have problems to share. I am glad they gave you the aide too as that must have made things go smoother
too.

It sounds like a great day! It is so wonderful to see that as a family you came together to make sure your son had a great time despite his disability. I was so pleased to read that because, sadly so many children are just left behind when they can’t join in with the others easily but you cared so much you made sure he enjoyed himself. Glad you had the aide to help too, it sounds like it all fell into place for you all. You’ve made special memories you can all share later on...Good on you...All the best!
