Keyboard Letters - Do you memorize these?

During my college days, we are obliged to memorize the arrangement of the keys either in typewriter or computer keyboard. Our Professor will get annoyed if somebody in the class is not familiar to the keys and their arrangements. Aside from that, they keep on telling us that it will be very difficult to type quickly if you are not familiar with the keys. However, when I started to work, I did not notice that some of my colleagues are not familiar with the keyboard arrangements. And yet, they can type faster. How about you, did you get yourself familiar with the keys of your keyboard or typewriter in order for you to type fast?

airasheila, I'm a college student and none of my teachers has ever ask or made us memorize the key board. That is interesting, you must be a very fast typist now. When I was younger, I know my computer teacher makes us use TYPE TO LEARN program. This is to teach us how to type faster and memorize. A lot of students didn't take this seriously. Sadly I am one of them. My AVERAGE WPM is 30-40. Kinda sad to be honest.

Good day to you Protogirl, Dont feel sad. Just believe that you can do more. The average WPM that you have now might increase by simply practicing typing. It is proven that "practice makes perfect".

I can memorize the whole keyboard. I don't even have to look at the keyboard to type and never miss any words. I can type and watch TV at the same time too and not make any mistakes. I've been typing for 11 yrs and taken many courses in typing and I can now type 200 words a min. I beat my school record. It's a talent of mine and I'm keeping it til the day I die. It helps me too because I work in the business field and it's nice I can type and be good at it. I also help others out when needed and that's my passion!

i got familiar with my keyborar just typing and trying to type faster and faster. u have practiced a lot so far. every computer keyboard has a little mark on F and J key's surface. what i naturaly tend to do is placing my index fingers on them. and no matter if theres light in the place or not, or if i am just staring at the screen ... by placing my fingers there i just know how to move my fingers so as ti find the rest.

You remind the little mark on F and J,it's funny that I didn't know them in the university.I am not a good student who can sit in the classroom all day,and I rarely went to the computer class and the first time when I use the computer I put my index fingers on R and U.It's not until one time I was typing letters at work one of my colleagues shouted loudly"You put your fingers in wrong place!" then I knew the convex on F and J.But it's hard to change the habit however I have improved and now I put my left hand's index finger on F and right on U,and can type more faster than my colleagues.

This is a skill that I'm really pleased to admit I have! During my teenage years I attended a Business Administration college and it was here that I learnt how to touch-type! I know and remember exactly where the letters are on the keyboard and when I am typing I use all of my fingers! This is a good skill to have as it means that you can type fast and you don't have to constantly be looking down at the keyboard. I notice some people only use two fingers and eventually their typing speed gets faster as they become so used to the method. It's nice to be able to type though as it means that you can get a lot more work done in a much shorter time frame. I'm really grateful that I have this skill and it certainly looks impressive when you are sitting at the keyboard doing your thing as it were! Andrew

Your professor was wrong. When you're typing, it sticks to your subconscious mind the positions of the letters in the keyboard. It's like riding a bicycle. After some time, you won't mind where you lean. All you'll mind is where you're going.

Hi, I don't know if you call this a form of remembering. But I use a special technique called touch typing. I had to practice for a few weeks at a stretch. Then it became a permanent asset. I mean I don't have to type while looking at the keyboard. I don't know if I remember the keys at all. It just comes automatically. I type faster than I write or sometimes even faster than I speak. No body taught me. I kinda taught myself. But I feel quite comfortable with this while chatting or writing my article. It feels like my fingers move along with the pronunciation. Thanks. God bless you

I never took my typing class seriously that I didn't know the importance if it until i get to the point of looking for job where some or I'd say most of the companies require their applicant to have at least 40wpm and touch typing or memorizing the keyboard letter are essential when you get to follow a script. Good thing i passed the internet typing exam with a minimum score. After which i practiced online touch typing and now i can type as if i memorized my keyboard with proper fingers on right letters.

Few years back I tried to learn a systematic typing but left in between because I did not like it. I do not memorize keyboard letters and type like I am killing some insect on keyboard using my fingers but Itype fast. If I try to memorize and then type it would be slow so I do it my way.

No I don't... It's just time and frequency that made me fast on using keyboards. Even now, I don't memorized the computer keyboard though my hands are pointing to where it should be while I'm typing.

I have the keyboard memorized, which is a good thing, since I use an iPod, and need to type with one finger.

I will never forget learning the keyboard keys in high school! I had a typing/basic computer class sometime in my junior high years. It was tough to catch on at first, I remember. But now I've been typing with the keys memorized for years! I would consider myself a pretty darn fast typer too since I know all of the keys. I can't imagine my life without having memorized this simple thing since I use the computer a lot!

I know the arrangement of the keyboard because i had a class were we had to type without looking at the key board. It does help though. But i Dont think thta is important to memorize, everybody has there own way to type fast.

Well, my prof was not so strict about memorizing the keyboard buttons. What we had was a typind tutorial software which was so obsolete.
