I went to the Dr. today for some tests for some upcoming surgery I'll be having this summer and of course before the test we had to go through the normal, blood pressure, temp, etc. The nurse then asked me to step on the scale and when I did, I almost died..I have gained 12 pounds since my last visit. I knew that I had gained some weight because my jeans are not fitting like they used to and I even had to squeeze into my "fat" jeans this morning. I'm not making excuses, but cooking for a living is probably going to kil me. I have been doing a lot of work through word of mouth and everybody is ordering pasteries, cheesecakes, and other "heavy cream" type deserts. I also good a lot of savory food with heavy cream and butter and all kinds of delicious yet deadly ingredients and now its showing. I always make a "trial" recipe if its something I've never done before and of course what else would you do with it but eat it?? I'm not liking this at all. How do chefs stay slim? I'm finding it impossible. Anyway, I've made up my mind to start a diet that I found in Prevention magazine and supposedly I will loose 12 lbs (ironicaly)and 2" in two weeks..I also bought a workout video today that is done for 8 minutes twice a day..not too hard at all. I have never done a diet before. I've always been lucky and have maintained the same weight of about 115lbs since high school. Now, that I'm getting older, thats not happening anymore and apparently I have to change the way I do everything..I'm not looking forward to this because I have placed a lot of pressure on myself to succeed and if I don't I will be very disappointed. Have any of you done an intense diet for the first time? What was it like and how were your results? I need some morale support here guys!!! I'm posting this picture on my frig for motivation!! lol

I will give you any morale support you need sulsisels..Losing weight is hard, but not impossible, especially if you are not too overweight and need a doctors help. The main problem of course is your "job"...I know this might be hard, but when you taste test, can you eat just enough to know it is good? Or get someone else to try it that you trust?
Another option, and I don't think this is proven, but I feel it has helped me, get your heart rate up before you eat..See most people eat a meal and then exercise, but I heard somewhere that if you exercise first, your metabolism is running faster and you will burn calories quickly at this time.
Also, watch your meat intake and try to not clean pork or seafood. When I say seafood, I mean shellfish.. Salmon and tuna are really good for you and you should eat it as often as you can.
Drink plenty of water, it fills you up, and keeps you from getting dehydrated.
Another method that isn't proven, but I use to do is to take a tablespoon of vinegar and honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon and mix into a cup of hot water. Drink this daily before breakfast and again 1/2 hour before bedtime..
These are some tips that I have used.Though I am not skinny by any means, I have went down 4 sizes..

I can't find the information on this because it was before my computer crashed and I and I had it saved in my mail..I originally got this tea mixture from a Indian, (as in India, not Native American), friend on myspace a couple years ago. She has a ton of natural health and beauty tips and this was one of them. It somehow does something to the fat in your tummy, but without the info, I can't really remember how or why, I just know that when I have gotten out of control with exercise and eating wrong, I start out by drinking this and going back to exercising again. I think I may start, since summer is just around the corner. Plus another benefit is the vinegar and honey is great for warding off colds, this elder at this church I use to go to swore by using a tablespoon of vinegar and honey when he felt a cold coming on..
Anyways, the 4 sizes was not over night..I did a lot of diet changes, including more vegetables and removing shellfish..Plus I was walking the neighbors dog around the block every day, though that was only a 20 minute walk. And of course the old sit ups and crunches and weight lifting that I do 3 times a week..
Yep, a lot of work if you want to slim down..

Hey Carm..I received the stuff from Prevention Mag for the diet. It appears to be based on walking which is cool with me cause I like to walk. Its just that it is so bloody hot here now that I'm going to have to either go to an indoor track like at a gym or do it early in the morning. They sent a whole big book to read which is going to take a few days cause there is more than just walking, a lot on diet and other exercises. They sent 2 dvds too one for cardio the other on strength, whatever that means. I'm hoping that this weight just drops off easily. I'm going to start on Monday and according to them in two weeks i should loose 12 lbs..We'll see..I'm doing my food shopping today and Jim isn't going to be happy with what comes home from groeries this week. I really don't care however,he either eats what I make or he can go to McDonalds..this is about me, not him..right?? J

Hey Carm Just got back from a 3 day charter on the boat and the food the Captain bought for this trip was unbelievable..Lobsters and 3" filets, clams, oysters, every kind of raw vegetable you can think of, every kind of fresh fruit you could ever want, and on and on. I made crepes one morning with raspberries, black berries and kiwi that came out great, he wanted cinnamon rolls so I have the Cinnabon recipe and made those, eggs all 3 mornings, eggs benedict yesterday and my sauce was wonderful. The galley had an ice cream maker built in, (he's an ice cream freak) so I made sorbet and homemade vanilla for mini baked Alaskas, I made a white chocolate Mousse in chocolate meringue shells with raspberry coulis,,,need I go on? So you see my problem..Its hard, real hard. I made a huge fruit salad for myself and tried to eat a big bowl before I started cooking everyday beause cooking while hungry is just as bad as food shopping when hungry..It worked pretty well..I got up at 3am each day and did a gruling workout in the on board gym before work..I did tredmill for 30 minutes then watched an aerobics video for the other 30 minutes. I dont have another trip scheduled till late June so I'm going to really concentrate on this diet. The diet I bought online should be in the mail tomorrow so after I read everything I'll start that this week. You make some really valid points. The exercise before eating makes a lot of sense to me and I think I will definately try that. As far at meat goes, I stopped eating red meat about 2 months ago and have replaced it with vegetable dishes. I really starting to like eating more vegetarian. At first I didn't but I wasn't cooking the right kind of stuff. After reading lots of material, I have come up with some really satisfying veggi meals that are delicious. I will continue working on perfecting this. I do drink water, all day long so I've got that covered. I add a singles on the go packet of crystal light to my water just so that its not so boring (I love the pomegrande one). What does the tablespoon of vinegar and honey and cinnamon do for you? I'm interested in that so let me know when you get a chance. If you went down 4 sizes you obviously are doing something right and I hope I'm as successful as you. 12 lbs is the magic number for me and I'm gonna do it if its the last thing I ever do,,,and it might be!!

Personally, I hate dieting, but I do exercise and that helps keep my weight down. I use spark people online to help--it is a community and very supportive. Good luck to you.

you'll do great. i would say don't diet, just change your lifestyle a little bit at a time. just take a bite of the food instead of eating the whole cake. drink diet in stead of regular soda, skim milk instead of vitamin. D. what's most important is that you are happy with yourself. get to where YOU want to be and then stay there. don't go overboard, or you'll just gain it back.

Hi MrsStevens..I hope I am able to do great..I really really want these extra pounds off so thats half the battle I think. I agree that if you just eat correctly and do not overdue than you don't need fancy diet gimmicks. It just being sensible about what you put in your body..Now, to apply it is the next step!!

I have my own diet website with my own diet on it, The Oldchem diet.
The Oldchem Diet will only help you to lose weight because you will be cutting down the total amount of energy from the foods that you eat, but you will not be left hungry.
But it won't be boring - in fact, it is pure and simply healthy eating (with the odd treat allowed of course!!)
It will not involve meal replacement shakes or bars, eating a couple of bowls of breakfast cereal a day or drinking cabbage soup until you resemble the Incredible Hulk.
This is a diet designed to fit into any lifestyle, that can be used with your family and that won't cost you an arm or leg!!
On this diet your healthy eating will mean that you will be providing your body with just the right amounts of all the necessary nutrients and enough energy required by your body to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight, as well as aiding the development of your physical, mental and emotional health.
This diet works because it incorporates the different groups of healthy foods, all of which provide different types of nutrients that are essential for your body.
With this Diet, you do not count calories or points just simply eat a certain amount of each food groups a day, the amount depends which target group you are in.

First of all, thank you for being a chef. Secondly, If you're asking which diet would be best, naturally it will depend on YOU, not the diet. Certain diet plans work better for certain people while other ones would work better for another group of people and so forth. I would personally recommend Body4Life. Anyways, if you commit yourself and you don't let yourself slip, then NATURALLY, you will succeed!

Thanks Forgery. I will look into Body4Life and check it out. Like I said, I have never in my 54 years done a diet so its gonna all be new to me. I think that 99% of success will relie on mind set and like anything in life, positive thinking typically brings positive results. I'm going into this thinking it won't be that hard and in just the matter of a few weeks, I'll be back in my 7/8 pants..I have to cause I can't afford to buy all new clothes..thats for sure..Thanks for your response..J

I've tried losing weight before and my biggest mistake was allowing one thing to disrupt my schedule. Once I get derailed- even for a day- its hard to get back on track. Stay steady and on track and remind yourself every morning what your goal is. Now I weight myself every morning to remind myself why I'm doing what I'm doing. It has worked. I've lost 3 lbs and still dropping. Good luck with your weight loss.

Hi vjenkins..That is very good advice. To start the day each day with a reminder of why I am doing this diet and how much I want the end result is a great idea. I'm going to try it and then mid afternoon, remind mysef again, and at 9pm and at 2am...lol
