When your kid is the legal age to get a tattoo

My step daughter has a friend over today and they came out of her room and told me that they were putting tattoos on themselves. These are those tattoos you can apply by using a little water then peeling them off the spot where you apply it. I was thinking and said to hubby, to imagine when they are older and want to get a real tattoo? He just laughed and I told him not to sport the bill for it. I then thought about when my own son may want to get a tattoo, at the legal age of course and how he's going to pay for it?
If your kid was of legal age and wanted to get a tattoo, would you help them pay for it? Would you pay for it in full or would you make them save up for a tattoo on their own?

When I was 16 I decided I wanted a tattoo, and my mom's best friend was going to pay for it for me as a Christmas or birthday gift.. whichever I chose. Unfortunatly I got pregnant before Christmas, so instead of the tattoo I asked for some items for the baby.
Then I got my first tattoo at about 18, and it was free. A friend knew someone trying to start up his own place, so he gave me and my friend each a free tattoo.. and it turned out real nice. It's still my favorite tattoo. Later I got 2 more, 1 that I paid $80 for, and the 3rd was another freebie, but it's cr@p (not the same guy obviously).
My kids would have to be at least 16 before I allowed them to get a tattoo... as long as it's something clean, and something I think they can live with for their whole lives. If I could afford to I would help them pay for it.

That is so nice of you to want to help your kids out if they wanted a tattoo. I think I would let my son make his own judgements and pay for it himself.
I knew this guy also who was starting out his tattoo venture and stupidly I allowed him to use me as his subject. Not only do I have permanent markings of that time in my life but I also have to deal with the memories of it.
Thanks for your reply,

When I was about 14, I went through a phase of wanting a tattoo. There was a place in town that never id'd and lots of girls my age had them. My mum threatened me with just about everything and said if I got one I'd be disowned. I really am glad that I listened to her, as this phase was short lived and by the time I was 15 I could no longer stomach the thought of having one.
I would be really disappointed if either of my children were to get tattoos when they are older, although I completely accept that it is their choice. Therefore I have to say no, I wouldn't be contributing a penny towards it.
