Last week one of my doctor friends came for diner. While her wife went to the kitchen to get some coffee after diner, I said I wanted to ask hom a medical question. That´s when my friend looks at me with the patience you look at spoiled kids. Ok, he said, what is it. I told him that i had beed reading online (there he freked out) about age, wrinkles and meds. Did he think I should take some hormones to have a not so thin skin, not so much belly fat and so on. He scolded me. He said that ageing is a normal process. He said I should spend less time at the computer and more time walking that poor dog of mine. He said A LOT of true, nasty things to me. Fortunatly Dixie came back with the coffee, changed the conversation, he poured me yet another glass of that wonderful wine he had brought and we didn´t kill each other.
Do you buy and have over the counter meds without your doctor´s opinion? Do you tell him/her when you see him? What´s your approach to meds? Share

Do you proceed the same way with vitamins, aspirins and meds for colds? And how about natural meds?

I have followed some healthwise information and it came out well. I had the problem of having mouth ulcers often. I heard from many people that itw as because of the deficency of vitamin B and had a lot of vitamin tablets, but it didn't work. So, I posted a discussion in Mylot and somebody told me to take worm tablets. I had worm tablets and I didn't get mouth ulcer for the next 6 months.

I'm actually very anti-medication to begin with...both prescription and OTC types...if one starts reading the side effects of many meds it makes one hesitant about taking them...For instance, my doc once prescribed to me Celebrex, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory...so I looked it up...there was a SEVERE warning that it can trigger blood clots, strokes and heart attacks...did I take it...hell no! Okay maybe the risk of actually getting a heart attack is slim, but I know a nurse who lives next door to me...she too was prescribed that medication and refused to take it.--kind of says something if a nurse won't take it, doesn't it?
I too though, like you take vitamins, but I know you read that we get our vitamins through the food we eat,but that isn't necessarily so anymore...since food is grown on the same soil over and over again, the nutrients in the soil aren't as rich, also, food especially fresh produce is stored in warehouses for weeks until it's shipped then may be shelved in stores several weeks more...losing their full nutrient value. As far as telling my doc what vitamins or herbal supplements I take..nope...he doesn't believe in them either like your doc--most docs don't...they rather shove medications on us that can have severe side effects and perhaps make us even sicker

In the city where I live there are several farmer´s markets in every neighborhood. There you can buy very fresh veggies. The soil is rich enough for the veggies, as long as they grow there. If it wasn´t, they would just die.
Anti-inflammatories are dangerous. You are right to be cautious.Take care!

I take certain vitamins under the advice of my doctor and everything else I take has been prescribed by her also. I do look on line for medical advice and I do take it within reason, for example I had an infected boil on my leg and I followed online adv ice about salt water compresses but would be very wary about taking anything without my doctor’s consent. I think that balance and common sense is what is required when looking up symptoms online. I am also very careful not to self diagnose!

I´m trying now the "vitamins in food" method. I will see how it works although I will have to wait until I see results.

My answer is no. Without consulting a doctor i will not buy any medicines directly. If at all i have any problem, i will consult the relevant doctor get myself checked and after getting his prescription, I will buy the medicine. I strongly believe that if we buy any medicines without consulting the doctor, that medicine may or may not suit me besides it is not advisable too

It seems that not buying any meds that the doctor hasn´t given you is a healthy measure. Do you proceed the same way with vitamins, aspirins and meds for colds? And how about herbs and other natural ways of healing? Do you ask for a doctors advise there too?

Are you undernourished? Why do you want to be fat? This is the first time I hear someone say that. We all want to get thinner.

The only over the counter meds I ever take where I haven't consulted a doctor are tylenol/advil for pain and pepcid/tums/gas-x for indigestion/gas/acid. I have some supplements that I take - they were recommended by a doctor, various doctors actually. And there is one prescription medication that I take occasionally.

I think there is a lot of false information everywhere. Take care of your body through good nutrition (lots of fresh fruits and greens), exercise (yes like lots of walking), going to bed early, keeping a positive attitude, good spirituality, and your body will look fantastic. Keep looking good!

Actually, you should research on OTC meds first before getting them. You might have underlying health conditions that may also affect the medicine's effects on your body, so it's best that you understand and know first what you are buying before attempting to take them. It is best to consult with a doctor first. Yep I once got scolded by my doctor for buying meds without his knowledge or self-medicating. It is always best to ask for a professional's opinion because they are the experts. However, do your own homework too :)

The only OTC meds I have taken have been vitamins and the like. But that was until last month, when I read that the only way our body grabbed the vitamins and minerals was in food. All that except if you has a severe deficience. THEN the doctor would have to see what to do.
