this coming school year we're going to have "French" as our free elective subject. it's kind of weird because I'm taking up information technology as my course? it would be better if they had "Mandarin" as our free elective instead since it is widely used. and rumors said we might have our on the job training in Singapore. so what's with french? what's your opinion everyone? is french a must study language?

After English, French is the second most learned language in the world. I've taken both French and Mandarin classes and if you're taking a language class for school and not really for yourself, I would recommend French.
Although Mandarin initially seems more useful than French, unless you intend on practicing a lot and studying characters all day, you're not going to be able to retain it for very long because since there is no alphabet, it's hard to retain a lot of what you learn in class. Even though my family is Chinese and I speak and see it all the time, I have a huge issue remembering characters, so even for someone who lives in a Chinese home, I have trouble.
On the other hand, French is a lot easier to remember and is less frustrating to learn and study because it's written in letters like the English language. It may not seem like a useful language in the states, but if you go to Europe, if the people don't speak English, there is a high likelihood they will speak French. I took French for five years and I don't regret it one bit. The French is a great culture to learn about and learning the language is a great gateway to do so.

You an always take Mandarin later in life. Assuming you go to college it's likely they will offer it there. My high school only offered French and Spanish, but when I finally got to college, they had Mandarin. So don't worry, there is still hope.
Bonne chance ("good luck" in French) learning French, it's a fun and gorgeous language to learn. It also looks good for college applications since most schools require you take a certain amount of foreign language.

my friend also said that. truth is I'm a Chinese too but I can't speak proper Mandarin. that's why i was hoping it would be chosen as our free elective. i might not be able to use friench because there is less chance that i will work in Europe. I'll be taking French in one semester.

Being in UK we have also the main course of French in our syllabus so I had chosen this and I thank myself for my choice today, French is such a beautiful language and spoken in many countries too. Even I have chosen a boyfriend from France. I am learning Mandarin now and I think if you have the opportunity of doing French then go for it you will enjoy the romantic language as we call it.
