I own a 4x4 in the form of a Jeep Wrangler. The only reason I probably own one is that I actually do use it off-road. I would say that most people should just go to 2wd and find a smaller vehicle. 90% of the 4wd will never see off road and the owners don't have the experience to even use them in the snow.

Good to hear that someone with a 4x4 actually uses it off road. So many people buy them just because they think it's 'cool' and wouldn't have a clue about how to use it off road. A lot of the 4x4s in the UK have the wrong tyres fitted and when we get snow they all get stuck!

First I have not heard of this, however if it is true, it is just the government and the auto industry creating more hype to scare the American Public to do what they want and control us. It is about money and greed and control. Secondly I own a Jeep and use it we live very rural and on roads that are mostly hard packed dirt and lots of snow in winter and mud for about six weeks in spring until things dry out. We use it for berry picking too and camping. So we use it off road and on lots of 3rd rate or worse roads. They are needed and I do not think they hurt the enviroment any more than our breathing does.

this isn't true ... nothing compares to the adrenaline when you drive a 4x4 care ...
