Should I give up dieting?

I reached the weight of around 14 stone 6 pounds (202 pounds or 92 kg) in January 2008. I started going to Slimming World and in 2 years, I reached a low weight of 12 stone 4 pounds (172 pounds or 78 kg). I am 40 years old, 5' 4" (162 cms) and have 4 teenage children. Until I was in my early 20s, I was very slim (a UK size 8, US size 4) and sporty, but as I have got older, I find weight stays on me much more. So I did Slimming World for over two years, but then I kept staying around the same weight and becoming very fed up. Then I have had stresses and worry over some of my children and recently, I just had a couple of weeks eating the things I had denied myself - cake, ice cream, etc. Now I don't know what to do. Should I give up on the diet? Or try a different diet? Or go back to Slimming World? My goal weight is around 9-10 stone (126-140 pounds, 57-63kg) so I now have around 3-4 stone (42-56 pounds, 19-25kg) to lose, which is a lot!

Hi Karen, you are about right where I am with weight and I need to lose too!!! I would advise you to lose the weight because the excess is not healthy for you. Also the older you get the harder it is to lose the weight.. We are human, we all blow it once in awhile, Enjoy the treat and get back on track! You mentioned the Slimming World but you didn't say anything about food. Food choices have a lot to do with weight loss. I have changed the way I eat and it is slowly having effects. I need to watch what I drink and drink more water, I have given up all soda pop but have switched to lemonade and orange juice so I still have the sugar and I really need to cut back on it. I have replaced all my meats with the different turkey options, the turkey will cut back on a lot of the fat. I hope that you decide to continue with your weight loss, it is for your own health.

Slimming World is like Weight Watchers, it is about healthy eating. I am vegetarian so eat lots of fruit, vegetables, do all the cooking from scratch so I make my own low fat sauces, etc. We do eat pasta or rice with most meals though but this is "free food" on the SW plan.

I shared that with my daughter and she wanted to know if it was Whole Wheat Pasta because her diet books all limit the amount of pasta and rice because they are a starch and turn to sugar in your body....hope I got that right! I knew she avoided the pastas.

Yes, I usually eat wholemeal pasta. It's hard for me being a vegetarian as every meal really includes pasta or rice, that kind of thing. On Slimming World, the green plan lets you have as much pasta and rice as you want.

Of course you should not give up!
Sounds like it must be pretty frustrating.. basically you've lost 30 pounds in 2 years? I'd be frustrated too... but 30 pounds is still a good accomplishment.
I don't know what Slimming World is... a gym? A weight loss plan like our weight watchers? Knowing that would probably help me advise you better.
Me personally, I have lost about 75 pounds in 7 months by going to the gym everyday and eating healthier. I get in a minimum of 1 hour of working out each day, usually cardio.. and I add some weight lifting too. Building muscle helps you burn more calories, and the cardio is what sheds the fat. I mix it up too, some days I do cycling classes, some days I run, some days I take an aerobics class. It's become fun and I enjoy seeing how much further I can push my body. It's also a good feeling to see how much I can do now that I could never do before (at one point I was breathless after just taking a shower!)
You definitely should keep pushing, because if you give up now you'll gain a lot of weight back... and I think if you work out a little harder you'll lose weight more quickly.

Thanks for your kind words and advice. Slimming World is like Weight Watchers, it's a food programme for healthy eating. You are allowed to eat as much 'free foods' as you like (fruit, veg, plus pasta & rice on the plan I'm on, the green plan), plus a calcium ration (skimmed milk, small bit of cheese) and fibre ration (4 x Weetabix or 2 wholemeal bread rolls) each day. Then you can have 5-15 Syns a day, such as a Flake chocolate bar is 8 Syns. As for exercising, I can't afford to go to the gym but I was doing exercises on the Wii Fit every day, but had a back injury & had to stop that. It's OK now though, so I could start again. P.S. How do you get line breaks in your responses? Mine just comes out as a block of text.

Do you have to pay money for Slimming World? I mean honestly you can do that by yourself... you can create your own diet plan because you know what's good for you and what's bad for you.. you don't really need someone else telling you what you can and cannot eat, right? So if it's something that costs money, then I think it's pretty pointless. All you really need to do is cut back on the things you know are bad for you. Switch to whole grain breads and pastas, brown rice instead of white, ground chicken or turkey instead of ground beef... make more meals out of boneless, skinless chicken bre@sts instead of beef or pork.. watch out for anything that contains high fructose corn syrup or other sorts of glucose.
Honestly you must already know what your downfall is... soda, chocolate, chips, cookies? Find ways to cut back on them... don't DEPRIVE yourself, but instead of sitting on the sofa with a bag of chips, grab a small bowl of them instead and stop when they're gone. If you're a soda drinker switch to diet soda. If you love chocolate try the sugar free puddings to cure your chocolate cravings.
As far as exercise go, the Wii Fit is good, but really not good enough. You'll see small results using the Wii Fit.. but if you can get out and do some real working out, you'll lose the weight so much faster (or buy a DVD). Even if it's just going for a walk everyday... try to do 20 minutes at a time of really strenuous exercise.. and work your way up from there until you can do a full hour. You can also buy some weights to keep at home to start toning your muscles a little.
The more you work out, the stronger your body will get, and the less likely you'll be to injure your back again (just remember to stretch before and after to loosen the muscles so you don't hurt them).
If you need more tips feel free to let me know.. I'm a wealth of knowledge when it comes to getting in shape.. and most of it I've learned from experience.
PS.. I don't know how my responses look like that.. it just happens I guess.

Yes, Slimming World costs me £5 a week ($7 US). The meetings are quite good for support, but essentially, you just get weighed there, then chat a lot, so I doubt they're really worth the money.
I have already made some healthy changes to my diet. I drink skimmed milk, Diet Coke, don't add sugar to anything, use wholemeal pasta (though still white rice, but usually once a week), etc. I try to eat a Flake when I want chocolate, as it is quite low in calories.
I do have some keep fit DVDs. I just need to get back into doing them, I suppose.
Any more tips you have would be very welcome. I appreciate all your help so far. Thanks!![](/Content/images/emotes/happy.gif)

I think that it might not hurt to look for a different diet to use. That is what I will do when I feel like I've reached a plateau that I don't feel like I am able to break through. If you are doing a combination of diet and exercise, perhaps there are some different exercises that you could use. A change in routine is a great thing to do because your body won't be quite sure what to expect and will react better to it.

I think its better if you will have a goal when dieting i mean that way even if stress and other concerns sets in you wont lose interest in what you do for as long as your still in your aim. Many people try doing those diet programs just to know that after some weeks they will go back to their eating habits. Thats why its important that you give yourself realistic goals so that in time you will be able to reap what you sow. Hope that somehow i was able to help you out in your decision making have a great day

I would have to say that you do what is best for you. If slimming World made you happy, then by all means return. Only return with a different objective. Do not call it dieting any more. Call it something like reclaiming better health. Do not deprive yourself of the things you love in life. Only buy the portions of the forbidden foods that you know you will not overeat. As you were typing your post you have to had said to yourself something has to change. Indeed it does. My suggestion go back to exercising you know it makes you release stress, and has you away from life if even for an hour. Call it something your time to be with you. Return home after each exercise session and remember how great you felt. Do not strive for skinny, do not stive for how people want you to look. Strive for feeling great about yourself and guess what you will feel great and be content.

Hey Karen, I applaud you at your honesty. However, I am also heavy. I am not morbidly obese anymore, as you're not either. As we get older our metabolism slows. We do have to watch what we eat. Also there's nothing wrong with liking food. I think that if you diet and deny yourself, you begin to resent the whole dieting thing. What I have done is portion control, and lots of walking and water. I have lost 180 pounds. I could probably lose another 50. But let's face it between my job and my family I dont have a bunch of time or money to buy special meals for me. I cook alot of chicken. Make alot of salads. In fact salads have become quite a favorite here. I use the basic lettuce, tomatoe, cucumbers, and then I add my extras: boiled eggs, bean sprouts, carrots, popcorn chicken, pork, any meat and feta cheese. Its a meal in itself. Try it. Take a few walks. One in the am. and one in the pm. Preferably before bed after dinner. Then you come in and take your shower. Then hit the sack. Try and eat before 6pm. If you do these things, You wont have to diet. You'll live a normal life and lose weight in a healthy manner. Happy Eating dl

Well Done with your weight loss, that is amazing! Thanks for your help and advice too. I think my main problem with the diet is boredom as for 2 years, I have had the same kind of thing. A typical day would be 2 Weetabix with skimmed milk for breakfast, maybe a low fat yogurt and banana for snacks, pasta with onions and garlic for dinner then for our main meal, I cook low fat Slimming World recipes (like Quorn cottage pie, vegetable curry, etc. - I am vegetarian. Or maybe jacket potatoes with cottage cheese and baked beans.) We are allowed 5-15 Syns a day and I usually have a Flake chocolate bar for 8 Syns. I agree water and exercise are essential too. I should go back to using the Wii Fit.

Hi Karen, Conngratulations on what you have managed to lose so far. Don't let this relaspe hold you back, when you are ready go back to slimming world or restart with something else, the main thing to remmeber with any diet is the less calories = less weight and also for as long as it takes you to loe it maintain that weight lose for the same amount of time so your body adjusts to the new you and that way you won't end up putting it all back on and more in some case. Good luck, you are doing so well. Huggles Ellie :D

Hi karen: I think that you should not give up. That's not an option. I think there must be something wrong because if you have a healthy life you should lose weight. Maybe you must see the doctor so he can help you to make a beter strategy for you to lose weight and have the ideal size you have in mind. Thanks for your sharing with us this problem. Have a nice day.
ALVARO.

It’s a good idea to have an idea of the calories that most food items have. If it is a packed thing then the label is sure to have the calories that the substance has.

Don´t give up Karen. Although one feels better (as vanity goes) when slimmer, the important thing is that too overweight means many illness waiting nearby. Diabetes is one of them, but not the onlyy one. I would set partial goals so it´s easier to accomplish. And I would also set a preset for every goal. I´ll buy a nice and EXPENSIVE pair of pants as soon as I go down one size (even though I have some panst in the closet waiting. Check the DASH diet if you have tendency yo high blood pressure. Take care!![](/Content/images/emotes/happy.gif)

Firstly well done for loosing the weight so far!
My diet and exercise plan I've been doing for a couple of weeks is already loosing steam so I'm probably not one to talk about this but I will anyway!
I think it's easy to get disheartened when the pounds stop dropping off and you dont notice the difference anymore. Even if you are achieving something it just doesnt feel like you are so firstly you have to realise you have done great loosing what you have so far and you will do great getting to your dream weight! You are also allowed your off weeks when the stresses and strains of life just get to you. It happens to everyone (who can resist cake and chocolate when they arent feeling too happy???)so dont beat yourself up about it.
If you are happy at the weight you are now then stay as you are, maintain a healthy diet and exercise and you may even just loose weight anyway. However, I gather your not too happy and ideally you do really want to loose some more. I think aiming for the higher end of your ideal weight (10 stone) would be a better target to reach and thats not just because its closer. Your about my height and the ideal BMI is around that weight, when I dropped to 9 stone (ages ago now I might add, I wish I could loose the weight like that again) and went to the doctors I was told I was too thin.
I'd say to give you a kick start back in your diet try something over than Slimming World. Changing to something new will probably get you excited and interested for a couple of weeks as you get to grips with something different. Also it may give you the chance to meet some new people again this might help motivate you. You could also just go it alone and save the money of a diet club. I'm sure their are plenty of places online to get support and you could put the money towards new fitness dvds or trying new healthy meals with ingredients you dont normally buy because they're a bit expensive.
In terms of exercise I would say do whatever you enjoy, if you love walking go for a couple of walks a day, if you love the wii fit (which I think you do!) then go for that. Personally I love doing fitness DVDs when I find the one thats right for me as it can make me really motivated. I also found that swimming was a really good thing to do though for motivation I found I needed a friend to go swimming with. Also try aiming for something, when I took up swimming in a bid to loose weight I also signed up for a swimathon for Marie Curie. It was a great incentive to make sure I took the exercise seriously. Make sure you are getting the most out of any exercise you do so even if its just a nice walk try and get in some power walking (it can be done without looking silly!)/go up that hill you always avoid to make it a bit tougher. You could even get some ankle weights!
Good luck! I'm sure you can manage to get to your ideal weight!

If you tried something completely different like swimming a few times a week your body would soon kick into shape because it would be so pleasantly surprised at the change of routine!
I am not sure if Slimmin World is the answer. Portion control is vital and SW doesn't really help that. Also drinking loads of water.
But I know it is so tough to lose weight!! Good luck.
