In late March, I got all excited about starting a garden. I don't have an area that isn't rock, so I planted everything (small plants) in containers. I think that's where I made my first mistake...not everything will grow in a container. (I also had tried planting cantelope, watermelon, and cucumbers (seed) in a small area where there is a little dirt...none of them grew.) I planted red and green cabbage, onion, tomato, herb, strawberry, and bean plants. This morning I finished pulling up the red cabbage, because it just wasn't doing anything (it looked like they were root bound, just like the green cabbage). I pulled the green cabbage up last week; it had gone to flower. This morning, I also pulled up the onions. The biggest one was probably the size of a boulder (marbles). This morning I also peeled about 10 caterpillars away from my parsley (there are no leaves left). The four strawberries I was all excited about got eaten by a rock squirrel. So I've been watering and watering...all for naught. I did put some leftover cucumber seeds in the containers where I pulled up the green cabbage. There were sprouts today. But I don't want to get too excited, because this garden just isn't going very well. Would you keep trying? And what would you plant in the containers that I pulled the red cabbage out of?

Oh dear! It is so disappointing when things don't work out. I have had this experience too, being all enthusiastic at the start and then only getting a return from a few crops. Last year was very wet and almost all my plants got chewed by slugs. This year I have not planted very much, only the things that the slugs don't go for, and there are hardly any slugs around because it has been dry!
Veg gardens really are trial and error. Don't call it quits just yet, keep persevering and some years your garden will give you back lots and lots, and some years you may just have to leave everything to the rock squirrels... But I would try netting those tomatoe plants while you still have something to protect!

I have three empty containers (where the red cabbage was). I'm considering planting something with shallow roots, but I just don't know what. When I go get plants, I plan to buy some netting to protect the tomatoes and the strawberries. The squirrels have left the herbs and beans alone, so maybe the rest of these will make it. I see beans, anyway. As for the caterpillars, they haven't been back since eating all the parsley. Maybe I'll try another kind of herb. I have cilantro, basil and oregano now and the caterpillars have left them alone. Maybe thyme? Thanks for the encouragement. This isn't as easy as I thought it would be...
