When to split/move hostas?

Hi, I'm not a brand new beginner, but I'm not terribly experienced with gardening, either. My thumb has gone from quite brown to a hint of green here and there! LOL! I have hostas in the yard that are self-maintaining, pretty much. They just come up every year, do their thing; and we chop them down at some point in the fall. I have at least one or two hostas that are pretty big now. Is there any particular way I have to split them? My sister-in-law would like to have some, as these were my Mother-in-laws. Can I do this now, or should I wait for the fall? Any other special instructions? Thanks for your help! ~artsyfartsygal :)

Hostas are best split in the fall. Make sure that the plants have been water well before you dig, so that the roots seperate easily and watered well again once they are planted. As for sally's response about those months that contain r, that is actually a good rule of thumb as those are the months that are cool enough not to stress the plant and they are not in active growing season. That rule actually applies to most all planting, not just seperating bulbs/roots.
