Do You Use An Umbrella?

I got soaked the other day as even when I do think to take an umbrella out with me when I go to open it won't or it turns inside out, I would much rather wear a lightweight rain coat and hood these days (which I should have taken with me instead lol) and if other people are using them they always seem to attack me too. So do you love or hate umbrellas? Huggles

Hi K4, same here. i am not comfortable with raincoats and hooded sweaters too. it's quite hassle for me having it in my bag or wearing it. i'll still go for umbrellas.

i don't know if it just me or what .. but other peoples umbrellas seem to always work better than mine...!!!! even if i get the same make., mine will jam half way up, or fold and break or even let the rain through.. so umberellas are a neccessary evil and when you find one that works keep it safe., so a little like yourself always regret not having the waterproof with me when get into umbrella disfunction... it sends my hair really curly... and i so try and keep it straight..!!! lol

Hi Artizan, No it is not just you, the same happens with me with umbrellas, I haven't a problem with my hair getting wet as it doesn't go curly butone of my daughter straightens her hair and will panic if it gets wet too, luckily she drives now so not too much of a problem anymore, although I have nevver known her to use an umbrella. I prefer to keep my hands free. Huggles. Ellie :D

When I take my umbrella, I wish I had got a raincoat, scarf, and boots instead. It seems that everytime I use the umbrella, the wind is so great it turns it upside down, the threads that hold it get broken. And it does not matter if it is a cheap one from the dollar store or one that costs almost $20, the same thing happens. Not only does it turn upside down - even in a small wind, but I am sure that God put Winnipeg when it rains as an example of what happened during the great Flood. The rain seems to come not just from the top, but from all sides, and from underneath.

I have this long raincoat but it does not look good on me. I also have the problem with boots as I have wide feet, but I do not want to wear my winter boots or buy rubber boots for kids. And I wear leather shoes all the time. I did have a pair of running shoes but it was when it was a little cooler. One time I was caught in the rain, I had my umbrella with me, and it did not do that much good protecting my head, so I took off my sandals, put them in my shopping bag which also had my leather purse in Then I walked barefoot home.

at times also, here in the philippines, umbrellas are not convenient to use... sometimes, typhoons come complete with heavy rains and gusty winds... so what use is an umbrella when the winds come too strong and simply take it the umbrella away from your hands... that's where raincoats become more convenient...

someone to shed on - have you shared umbrella with someone you liked?
i always bring umbrella no matter how hot or cold the weather is. sometimes its just in my bag, when i'm lazy to get it out of my bag i don't get it. as long as i can take the hotness of the sun. well,of course if its raining i would use it,my friend! wherever i go,i see to it that i do bring umbrella cause sometimes you don't know when it will rain or shine. at least you are ready to protect yourself no matter what happens.you know, umbrellas can also a way of defending yourself against bad people, right? especially nowadays, here its really raining almost everyday,my clothes won't get dry even i washed them the day before today. i always remember someone when it's raining and we share umbrella together.

i never used raincoats, ever in my life. i just find it irritating when i would have to be seated in the jeep where someone wores raincoat, makes me wet too.with umbrella, you can just fold it away and makes your seatmate dry as well as you.with raincoats, you will still feel the rain puring through your skin and you will feel wet too,not like in umbrella.you will be wet directly and still manage to wipe it not like raincoats.you have to remove the whole thing which may distract others and get them irritated...

Hi Zengy, I think in your part of the world an umbrell an essential here in UK we use umbrella just for rain and usually is never that hot. Huggles. Ellie :D

Not very often. I don't mind when it rains, although sometimes when it pours it down I do. More times out of ten I don't, as my Umbrella as been pinched by my father and I haven't yet replaced it. I generally only once one when I remember to take it out and if it's really coming down that fast, probably is the wind tends to be high which makes it harder to hold onto.

Hi Joey, Yes umbrellas can seem more cumbersome to use at times than to just get a bit wet instead I agree, but in starting this discussioin I have discovered that in some areas of the world they are considered necessary for health as a sun protector as well as rain. A coat with a hood free my hands so that is what I prefer. Huggles. Ellie :D

I used to use an umbrella, a lot of years ago. I don't know why I don't use one now. I guess because I am usually in a car when it is raining but I sure could of used one yesterday. Although I was mostly in people's homes, cleaning them, and in the car going from one house to the other, it was raining all day and it was a pain when I had to get out of the car and go into my trunk to get my supplies because by the time I get into the house I am soaking wet. Then I finally dry off by the time I finished cleaning the house and had to go outside again, to my car, to go to the next house and I get wet again. So I could have sure used an umbrella, maybe I have to think about buying one again.

Your right, I need both hands to carry my supplies so an umbrella would just be more of a pain than a help, wouldn't it. I guess that's why I don't use one anymore. Thanks.

Hi Chrislotz, Yes in and out of the car there is really no need and if getting supplies from it you may need both hands so an umbrella would be a bit of a pain. Annoying getting wet all the time though. Huggles. Ellie :D

Though cumbersome, I use the umbrella more than a raincoat as it is easier to travel around with an umbrella. It is difficult putting on a raincoat and taking it off in crowded places while travelling and my city is indeed very congested.

Hi Mayka, Here in Uk we have rain coats that fold to smaller than an umbrella and are very lightweight, this also frees my hands up too. Huggles. Ellie :D

Here too we do get light weight raincoats. But we have to travel in train and then a taxi to work and getting into a crowded train with a wet raincoat is cumbersome. An umbrella can be folded faster and put into the bag.
3 Jun 10
I don't like umbrellas as they leave you only able to use one hand, and then when you are indoors, its hard as you have to keep the umbrella open so it can dry. I hate walking around in crowded places when people have umbrellas as you have to avoid the ends of the umbrella as they can be sharp and then as you say, they turn inside out or break easily. If it is windy too, you can loose your umbrella as they blow away really easily. I much prefer to wear a hooded jacket/coat.

Hi Cinderella, I agree I like both hands free and when you have small children it is easier to wear a raincoat which allows shopping hand and holding child hand or to push the pushcahir. Huggles. Ellie :D
4 Jun 10
Yes when you have a pushchair, you need two hands for it and definatley for little walking children. You have no chance of holding an umbrella, but I like seeing little children with character umbrellas and wellies on lol Raincoat has my vote lol

I love the rain! When it is rain and flood potential. We had an over abundance of it here lately. Flooding is bad in some areas. Raincoat and hood? My goodness. If I was made of tissue paper or sugar or something maybe. Rain water actually makes your hair very soft. I love the rain!

I used to use an umbrella all the time. They were sometimes hard to hold though. Now I use a walker or crutches so I have no free hands to hold an umbrella. I usually wear a raincoat. I hate hoods, but now I don't really have a choice if I want to stay dry. I try not to go out in the rain, but sometimes you can't help it.

I just told a friend of mine that I was not going to a party tonight because of the rain. It was really raining hard with lightning and thunder. She said I could go with them or call her when I get there and she will come out with an umbrella, so I can get in without getting soaked.

To be honest I am very lazy to bring umbrella, I mean to hold umbrella. I do have umbrella but it is always in my bag. Even if it is hot in the morning I am still lazy to open and hold it to cover myself from the sun. as a result I have severe perspiration and my skin is darker this days. Consider summer had passed and I hardly used my umbrella. I only use it when it is raining hard, when the drop is so little I do not use it instead I run as fast as I can .

When I did own an umbrella I always forgot to bring it with me. I like walking in the rain any way. I would be more inclined to take one to avoid the heat of the sun. Some times you just can't find any shade when you need it. I really do think they are more trouble than they are worth.

I do not like dumbrellas since i was i child. Very early in life i found out how they turn inside out. Grrr!!! I usually carry a rain ponch which can be purchased from dollar stores. Usually 2 ina package. I carry them whereever i go in my purse. In the state i live the weather changes quicky sometimes. I also have i coleman rain poncho which i take with me sometimes. Mostly i use a umbrella for the sun so its more of a sunbrella for me.

Generalizing about the usage of umbrella is unfair. It depends on place to place. In a place like Kerala, where even a light rain is so heavy that you will be drenched even with a rain coat, umbrella is a must. Instead of dumping umbrella altogether, you should, maybe, use a better quality one.

I always have problems with umbrellas - no matter how sturdy they are meant to be they always seem to get damaged when I take them out :( either the wind blows them inside out or something silly happens to them and because I don't use them often I'm also prone to leaving them behind if I stop somewhere like a coffee shop, guaranteed it will have stopped raining when I come out and there goes my memory to collect my umbrella.. I have a very light jacket with a hood that I use when it is hot, it doesn't save much from the rain but at least I feel as if I'm trying lol
