I cant figure this out, last night i had a urge for cherry pie and went to the local Publix bakery where a full size normal cherry pie was selling for 4.50. Next to it was a no sugar added pie half the size of the normal size pie for 7.99, why are no sugar or sugarless pie so much more expensive than a regular pie ? there saving money by not adding sugar so why so much money ? the same with sugarless cookies, every once in awhile i'll but a pack of sugarless oatmeal cookies that are half the size, have half the amount of a normal box of cookies and they're 2.00 more a box i just dont get it, any reason why ?

because what they use in place of sugar to sweeten in, costs more than sugar, I bake for my diabetic dad, I use splenda and it is a bit pricey. Not as much but I see why it is more. You could bake them yourself. just use your regular recipe and use splenda in place of sugar cup for cup.

hi max well as a diabetic needing to buy sugarless products the added cost is maddening in that inplaceof sugar they use aspartame or other sugar free subsitutes and those are actually cheaper than sugar so they are sticking it to us who need sugarless prices. Got you coming and going if you cannot use sugar. grrrrrrrrrrrr my rant for the morning. they always tell me its because this is a special product oh yeah well duh
another excuse for making more off of someone's disability like charging twice as much for larger sizes. bah humbug.

It's probably the same reason that organic costs more than non-organic. You'd think it would cost less since they don't spend a lot of money on chemical sprays, wouldn't you?
I've noticed that about pies, too. I didn't think to do this before now but have you noticed on the ingredients label if they're using another kind of sweetener? I buy Splenda and use that instead of sugar sometimes. It costs a LOT more than sugar, even though it's made from sugar. (Go figure!) But, if there is no added sweetener of any kind, then I just don't see why they should cost more. I think I'll go to the store today and read the label of one of those "no added sugar" pies.
I can say for sure that they don't taste very good! I bought one of those no sugar added pies by accident once. When I went to get a piece, I noticed my mistake. Not wanting to waste money, I ate it but YUCK! If it did have any kind of artificial sweetener or Splenda in it, it sure didn't sit well with my taste buds!
Maybe it's just the manufacturer's way of cashing in on the health craze. They know that a lot of people want "organic" or "natural" or "nothing artificial" and know that these people will pay more for it. If that's the case, I hope whoever is making and selling them has nightmares at night for being so greedy!
They're not going to get MY money (now that I carefully read the packaging on everything... lol). I've countered the higher prices for organic or natural foods and grow my own.
I have cherry trees that are producing cherries for the first time this year, not enough for a pie but next year I'll be making my own pies! This year, I'll stick to the ones chock full of sugar.

there is no type of sugar at all in the no sugar pies, i could understand if they used splenda or some sort of sugar substitute but there's non, i use splenda in my tea and know how expensive that is, so im going to have to get one of the ladies at the bakery aside and ask her why and see if i cant get an answer from her. i imagine they taste terrible because they dont use the dark sweet cherries, it look's like the stuff that comes from cans. ooo cherry trees i had those when i was a kid and my parents couldnt get me out of them when in bloom. thanks.

I believe that this is just marketing technique for the health conscious buffs. There are so many diabetics now. Actually, the no sugar added sign is misleading. It doesn't mean that the product is totally sugar free.
But what can we do but buy these expensive treats. We have to satisfy our cravings sometimes.

Its very simple supply and depand. If you have cheaper to make cookies that every one wants you would want to up the price. So with so many people wanting to loose weight that is one of the reasons it costs so much more.Since people will pay more if they think it will help them to loose fat or not get fater.

i think its because they know they can charge more. they know a lot of people have a need for certain things. the dirty dogs! they just figure they can get more. just like organic foods. they dont need to pump stuff in to it if its veggies, fruit and if its meat the same thing. no special (nasty) treatments or care is given and yet they charge more if we want to eat right like our great grandparents did. even though the production costs less!!

Unfortunately, as most everyone has already said, it is just
a ploy to get those people who really can't eat products with
sugar to "pay more for less"! I have noticed that so many times
in all the grocery stores. The "sugar free" cakes, cookies,
pies are always so much more expensive! And they look really
delicious on the outside, but I don't know about the taste!
My girlfriend is diabetic and she knows which ones to get
because she has no other choice! I think it is really unfair
and is nothing more than an unfair marketing tool! And I love
"Publix"! Wish we had one up here!

Hahaha! I saw the same pie you are talking about! They also do that at the super target. I try to avoid sugar myself, as I learned recently there are people in my family who ended up with diabetes.

Its mainly marketing. They are trying to appel to the "I've got to watch my waistline crowd'. Not to say it isn't good, but they figure people will go for the "healthy" alternitive instead of the regular thing not knowing that yes' it has sugar, and yes' its artifical and worse for you then the "regular" pie.

it is expensive because the sugar they are using is not an ordinary sugar. They substitute it by using a no calorie sugar. If you go to the coffee shop, if you ask for a "equal" which is know for low calorie sugar they will give you. Instead of the regular sugar.
