I believe Honesty is the best policy. Do you?
Actually just the other day I went to CAFE COFFEE DAY with my daughter who is come home for the holidays and this place is her favorite. So after finishing eating we asked for the bill and the person had not billed us for one of the items so I just pointed it out and got it rectified. For a second I did think of not telling though but then right sense prevailed.
That got me thinking does everyone do it? Or do we think that it is our lucky day and just keep mum.

...am 100% sure.Infact we would have entered the cafe knowing that we have to pay whatever we have to eat or drink. It doesn't matter whether they have added the item in the bill or not but your conscience says that you had ordered that & you had that...so no two ways in paying for what you had.

avani, when I saw your discussion title, I was ready to answer yes, I am honest! But when I read your scenario, I went Oooops! Why would I point it out? It was their mistake, not mine. If I had given them more bill than I should, would they give it back to me? Especially the waiters? So, in all honesty, I would not point it out.
And so such a situation happened to me and my daughter not long ago.. My daughter pointed it out. Shucks!

I hate to admit this but I am not an honest person when such situation occurs. That's because it's not our fault to begin with. And yes, I will consider it my lucky day and keep mum about it because this doesn't happen everyday. The only time we were "caught" was when the staff find something amiss because the amount doesn't seem to tally with the bill amount. That's when the staff apologize for the mistake and request for the unpaid amount which we did it without much argument because we didn't even realized the mistake.

haha, I guess if it's just small amount we are looking at, then I would be thinking it's my lucky day. But it's a big amount, that's when I think I would tell them about the mistake. It's kinda contradicting, I know, but that's really how I view small and big amount differences.

yes, this has happened a lot in my case. Not only in cafes but even in the bus. The conductor gives excess change and I had to return it. Until I was 17 I had no thoughts like 'Should I?' I just used to give off the excess or do what is right without a second thought. But now-a-days my brain sort of looked too much into the shrewd working of the world and i do get thoughts like 'Should I?' but I somehow overcome it and do what is right, that gives peaceful mind :)

Hi Avani,
Its nice that you got your bill corrected and paid accordingly. That is one way of living up to our honesty. All honest people will do the same thing.Yes I have honesty in my blood and i also would have done similar thing. It has happened many times with me, that vendor had given me more money when he gave me change after buying something, and i have pointed out same to the vendor and returned excess money.
Happy honest living, Avani.

I always wait staff and clerks etc., them when they make a mistake. Most people are happy that it's pointed out. My attitude when I tell them is that we are all human and make mistakes sometimes.
Every one in a while, I get an idiot with a big ego who throws a tantrum that they never make mistakes. In that case I shut up and don't bother fighting with them.

Honesty is something that depends on the character and education. I'm a very honest person, maybe too honest sometimes! But there are people that has nothing to do with honesty. I always put myself in someone's place and say to myself: do I like this happens to me? And the answer is no. So I don't like to be dishonest to others as I don't like others to be dishonest to me.

I can't say I'm 100% honest because sometimes I do white lies. However, in a situation like this I definitely would be honest. I've been in this situation a lot of times and I always end up returning the extra change. Another reason for this is because I believe in karma. I believe that whatever I do would be returned to me double. So let's say for example I found a $20.00 bill today and did not return it to the lady who dropped it then in a week or so or maybe coming months I'm going to lose $40.00 and even more than that. :)

You did the right thing avani by pointing out their mistake. Being honest does gives us a right kind of feeling. However, it entails other benefits too. You have earned the gratitude and respect of the person who had served you. Eventually, they would have found out and they would penalize him. Next time you visit the place he might greet you with an ear-to-ear smile, the restaurant will ensure you get a prompt service. They will always remember you for your honesty.

I am honest and I do believe that there is karma, it may not now but latter... so in terms of that situation I am always honest, that same thing also happened in me, and I am glad in my decision.... honesty is always the best policy!

I recently just got in a fight with a couple of my friends about them not being honest. Yes, I am almost always honest. I think sometimes it's acceptable to not be 100% honest but at least 75%.

yes, i believe that. and i try to be as honest as i can to people, whether i know them or not. honest but not brutally frank. i own responsibility to the things i say, even if i mean to be honest and all. and i guess i have succeeded coz i'm really not good in lying. doing so makes me very uncomfortable! i'm not perfect though but at least i try to be an honest person.
