Acclimatising to the film version of Aragorn

I read and re-read The Hobbit and the lord of the Rings trilogy as a teenager and fell in love with Aragorn. There were no pictures so my mind was free to create the man of my dreams, an Aragorn for whom I am still searching. I have to admit that when I heard they were to make a film of the Trilogy my heart sank, I could not imagine any film getting anywhere close to the absolute wonder and credibility of the books. The films were, however, to my absolute amazement, really good, I am watching The Return of the King as I type. When i first saw the actor who was to play Aragorn I was distraught since he is absolutely nothing like the Aragorn of my dreams. Hhowever, I have now seen the film about a dozen times and although I am still looking for MY Aragorn, I have to say that I find it more than easy to accept the screen Aragorn. Have you found that your favourite Lord of the Rings character is entirely different to how you imagined, have you resigned yourself to the on screen portrayal, or do your teeth still grate every time you see it?

I've never read the book, or at least finish it, so I'm still sticking with the actors in the movie. I'd like to read The Hobbit thought. I hear it's better than the Trilogy.

I can understand that the Trilogy takes a lot of time to read, there is just so much going on in the books, so much description. Yes,The Hobbit is much easier and almost a little self contained fairy tale. It was the first Tolkien book I read, and I was introduced to it by a rather lazy but loveable college lecturer. The subject was supposed to be English and in particular the roots and meanings of words, but he had a recording of The Hobbit and played it over several weeks so that he could catch up on some research! I bought the book and then the Trilogy and fell in love with the whole lot. I hope you do find the time to read The Hobbit, it starts off slowly but once you really get into it you will not want to put it down. If you do read it please do let me know what you think of it. I still love my mental image of Aragorn, giggle.
