I like correcting typing errors. But maybe I should stop...

This has happened to me too many times, and it just happened again!
I am, I admit, quite a pedantic person. I try hard to spell things properly and use the correct grammar and when I see other people make mistakes, (particularly on their own websites or documentation), I do like to point this out to them! I feel like I'm being helpful - but perhaps I'm just an interfering old whatsitsname!!
Well, I just found a typo on a website that I use sometimes, so I felt it was my duty to email admin to tell them about it. And after checking my email and clicking send I noticed that I had made a typo myself! This always seems to happen, no matter how well I check before clicking the send button. This makes me feel as if I am not really qualified to send these emails after all!
Do you send emails like this? Do you think maybe the universe is telling me to stop??

I have done such things.
I worked at producing work instructions for many years, then went to work on the floor. My supervisor was to help the company get many of these pages done. He wrote them, handed them in to be typed, they were returned to him to be signed. He signed them, they were returned to be distributed and when told of the mistakes he blamed the typist. "No, she has at least 50 of these pages to type, and she was taught to type what she sees. You make a mistake, she types it, returns it to you to review and sign. You did not review it and correct the mistakes, you are just as incompetent as she is."
He was not happy to hear this, but he agreed later.

Yes, I agree. Your supervisor had ample opportunity to check for mistakes after he wrote the pages, and then again when he signed them! It was probably not in the typist's job description to correct mistakes, so your boss was definitely in the wrong!
Thanks for replying.

Look I have to do that myself in everydays work, but sometimes after to much readin your eyes get tired same as your mind. But it's not a reason to stop doing something you think is good. I'll say keep going but not like a machine. making mistake is part of being a human. So keep going !!

Yes, it's easy to make mistakes when you're tired.
Thanks for your response!

liquorice love your user name as I love the candy. lol No I think to do that is a bit rude. please be careful on my lot as one of the donts for making discussions is to not make fun of or try to correct the grammar of users as we have many here who use English as a second language.
I think for myself I am doing well to check my own writing and pick up errors that I am alway making either spelling ones or grammatical ones.

Hi Hately, I'm glad you like my name and the candy. It's my favourite, (you probably guessed!)
I'm not talking about correcting someone's grammar on myLot, I would never do that on a discussion site where people make an effort to type in a language that isn't their own. I only admire people who manage to do this at all!
The site I'm talking about is for a company that sells a product that I've used. It is a professional site. I really like the product and would not want them to lose out in any way because they spelt something (a place name) wrong.
Yep, I'm also finding it hard to pick up my own errors these days, lol! Thanks for your answer.

Liquorice. Use spell check. Even though it isn't always right, its a pretty good guide. I hate spelling mistakes too and words that are used wrong. So often I want to reply to discussions and point out mistakes but I don't want to hurt anyones feelings or make it sound like I'm a know it all. It astonishes me that businesses let correspondence go out with typo's. It immediately tells me something about the company.

Thanks sulsisels, yes, I do usually use spellcheck. It's often the things that spellcheck misses that I get caught out on! Like somehow typing "they" instead of '"the"! Spellcheck doesn't point it out as it's also a word. What I need is a spell and grammar-checker! Preferably one that knows exactly what I meant to say...
Yes, I'm glad it's not just me who gets frustrated at businesses who can't spell. I think it does say something not great about the company. Thanks for your reply.

Hi sulsisels: Basically I agree with you in the fact that sometimes it's simply necessary to make these kind of corrections for example a business letter and sometimes you can just let it go because it's not that important. For example Mylot responses. Here what matters the most it's that you can understand what people are saying. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

I think you did a right thing, i should have been at your place, coul dhave done same. There was similar spelling error on a technical site StickyMind and I wrote them about it, they appreciated and thanked me for this catch.
Human errors are not uncommon but on a website where many peoples are viewing the content, should have maximum accuracy.
I do mistakes but that is not published on everywhere and there not many viewer to my mistake. Pefection is just a word but we should target towards that.

It will be certainly rude if we point out the grammer or the spelling, more over as per mylot rules we are not supposed to do this, here we have users from all countries and english is there second language ...
Thanks for sharing.
Welcome always.
Cheers.

Hi Professor2010, I wouldn't correct anybody's spelling or grammar here on myLot or on any other discussion forum. Here it's important to have discussions, and as long as people get across what they mean then that's ok. I appreciate that a lot of people work hard here to post in a language that isn't their first, and I wish I could do that as well as they do!!
I meant on business websites, or other professional sites, where correct grammar and spelling is important to their image and their business. ..It's just a bit remiss of me to also make a spelling error in my email that's pointing out their typos!
Thanks for your answer.

Nope, I'm not that good without a spell check. I especially have problems with words ending in -ance and -ence. Maybe if I could get paid for it I would make a greater effort to remember.
If it is any consolation I researched about brain activity. Eyesight is the most fascinating. The eye doesn't work like a video camera. Multiple processes go on all at once, processing motion, shadows, outlines; they don't know how many of these then puts it all together. But the thing is what gets put into the consciousness is the brain's best guess based on prior experiences. So it is easy to perceive things that aren't exactly there. Or not perceive something that is right in front of you.
The only suggestion I can think of is to take your time, and also to put it away and do something else for a while, then check it again before sending.

Hi liquorice: I haven't done that before but when my brother or sister are in front of a computer writing something and I notice they hamed a typing error I make an observation. I think it's not bad to make this because you're simply pointing that must be corrected. The most important thing for me is that you have to know the way to tell people that you find his/ her mistake without making them feel like idiots. It's quite difficult but we all commit these kind of mistakes. I won't say that you should stop doing this but only if a) they ask you for your help or b) it's really necessary to change this. Thanks for asking us this question. Have a nice day.

i have a blog and i commit a lot of typo errors.. sometimes, my post have been published for a while before i would notice the errors... im not perfect and english is just my sencond language anyway...
i had this, friend/college classmate, i told him once that there was in error in his blog.. he replied and said, "who cares, this is not a f*ckn thesis"... lol.. it was the time when we were working on our thesis and we had to carefully check everything...
so yeah, i applied it on my own.. my blog is not a thesis anyway.. :)
