Is short cut a bad cut?

Hi friends! While traversing through various paths, sometimes we get tempted to take a detour for reaching our destination as soon as possible. We resort to short cuts (shorter but tedious routes), instead of longer routes. Once my Professor told me that short cut is always a bad cut, I have also observed the same in some of my journeys. What would you say - Have you found short cut(s) better than the longer route(s) or you always preferred a longer but smooth and clean route? Please share your experiences with us.

Life has changed, thoughts have changed and so has our living pace. I appreciate the professor totally and would like to believe in that line as well. However, having said that, life has changed vigorously and drastically. We are virtually living on the edge. We have to compete to the fast world changes. Today is an era of fast pace which I would not call short cuts but the the work done more efficiently in a much lesser time than earlier times. This is a very good discussion and I can go on and on. Thanks for starting this.

Hi mimpi! I wish you could have go on and on..............................!!!!! You see the discussion could be interpreted in two aspects, the one way to interpret it 'resorting to short cuts in life' and the second one is 'resorting to short cuts, while travelling'. No doubt that life is fast paced and work gets executed quicker in comparison to yesteryears. However, resorting to short cuts for getting success may not turn out to be fruitful in every situation. Sometimes, one need to move ahead either step-by-step or may need to take a longer but smoother route. As regards, travelling, in my opinion, it would be better to take a longer, known and smoother route rather than taking a shorter, bumpy or unknown route. Shorter routes may save our times but they are most of the times, full of hurdles and potholes. Thanks for sharing your valuable thoughts. Deepak

Hi Dpk....well if you are referring to our choice while travelling, very often its difficult to make a wise decision these days, considering the rising price of petrol.....If I opt for a long and smooth ride,I end up with a bigger fuel bill...If I opt for the shorter but bumpy ride,I can save on petrol, but I will have to subject my car and my spine too...to unneccessary torture..... So I have finally resolved my dialemma...I opt for the long and smooth ride normally ,and opt for short, bumpy rides only when I am in a hurry to reach my destination.....since short cuts have another advantage,,,,,,,you can avoid traffic signals, and the long queues at busy junctions.........

Is this discussion literal or figurative Deepak?--If it is literal, we would have to see who the person is--Now I do not drive a vehicle and if there are speed breakers and pot holes and bumpy roads anyone would naturally prefer to take the longer good route. In life, there is no short cut to success; but there are always short cuts that ease time pressure on a person.I would conclude that if a person is extremely skilful in overcoming the tedium or difficulty of the short cut then he can choose the short cut.I would do it at times where I am very sure. If I know the pitfalls and am certain of getting over them and reaching my destination then I would prefer this. Known short cut is better than unknown longer route. On the other hand, if a short cut is just an inspired guess and the longer one is already known or heard of then it is better to take the longer route because this supposedly 'short' cut would become longer than the expected.

Hi Kala! The discussion was mainly confined to travelling. Sometimes, we get tempted to take a short cuts and drive on bumpy and damaged roads to save time, however, I feel that it would be better to take longer route, which are smoother and easy to drive. In life, you contention appears somewhat correct that it is better to take known short cuts than to follow the longer unknown routes. I prefer to move ahead step-by-step. Have a great day! Deepak

I would like to put it this way - Whenever I am on the road driving either my car or scooter, I remain very cautious and alert and drive my vehicle with my full concentration. I do not take short cuts and prefer to take longer and smoother roads to avoid the traffic jams etc.

Hi Deepak, My better sense says that it is better to go through the route that you are well aware of and know about. But I do the opposite and frankly have gotten into such situations from which I have found it a herculean task to find a way out.The other day I and my daughter were driving to a place and found the regular route blocked with traffic and so i decided to take a detour which my sense told me would lead to the same road further ahead, which on asking some people there was confirmed. But the route went in and out through extremely narrow street and then through gutters and what not and my daughter was very annoyed with me.I dint blame her because I was more annoyed with myself, and that was not the first time that I did that either lol...never seem to learn from mistakes - All the best deepak and have a great evening

Thanks Kiran! I know how irritating it would have been when the imaigned short cut proves to be really meddly.THe best thing in such a case would be to findsome icecream parlour there[if by chance you see one] and indulge--then you can find solace that something had come out of that mess an dit had happened because you did that unplanned thing.

Hi Kiran! You have echoed the same views, as have been done by our dear friend Kala and I agree with you that it is better to travel on a known route rather than unknown route. I prefer to take longer and smoother roads to avoid traffic. I do not mind reaching 5 minutes late at my destination, but I do not want any hassles on my way. As far as you are concerned, you should take a lesson from your adventure, which you did on the other day and should not venture on any unknown route, next time if you do it, your daughter will not spare you..........lol! Have a great evening! How is weather over there? Deepak PS - pl. check your BR.

I better read kala's response, she always has some very interesting perspectives on any subject we discuss...As you say, yes it is always better to be cautious rather than go head on into trouble....I am , at least for the time being very cautious, sticking to the known routes...Deepak, monsoon has begun here and since yesterday it has been raining, but , it is still not like the heavy showers that we usually get at the beginning of monsoon season every year... Checked my br and left a response as well, thanks once again

Hi Deepak I always believe in slow and study wins the race kinda work. Whether we take short cut or longer journey, efficiency should be there. As far as the road journey is concerned, it is ok, coz we reach our destination quickly but regarding the other things, what your professor says is correct

If I have patience and time to drive my vehicle, then I will take the longer route or else I will go by short cut, provided the road is good and safe

Hi sweetie. I have to agree with your professor. A short cut is a bad cut. Rather take the one you are used too, no matter how long that will take you. It will keep you out of trouble. TATA.

Do you mean when traveling or when you do tasks? If you mean taking a short cut to get to your destination quicker well there are short cuts and then there are just another way to go.to get to my favorite mall, there are two ways. One is a straight route but it has many traffic lights and lots of traffic. But " short cut" Isn't really any shorter but it has fewer traffic lights and less traffic. If you are talking about the tasks of life, then there are some short cuts that work and others that don't.I like the shortcuts that help me do two things at once. But Trying to short cut to make things happen sooner rarely work.

I'm fine! I understand. Instead of going on the highway , the short cut is along a smaller and sometimes less paved road. My short cut and the regular route are both considered an highway. There are 4-6 lanes but they have traffic lights. But there are short cuts here too where the street of the short cut is a smaller less smooth road.

Hi Sarah! My question was mainly confined to travelling. My experience tells that short cuts may have some bumps and it may not be as smoother as a longer route would be. Short cuts does not always save our time, I feel. Thanks for joining and sharing your views. How are you doing? Have a great day! Deepak

Obviously short cut is a bad cut if you are on the wrong path! Otherwise, I do favour short cuts. It cuts short time, money and effort which can be used to generate more money and time. Often a short cut is paved with obstacles which may made it a longer path to go with. I would take a path that had been proven. lol.

Hi whyaskq! Short cut is bad cut most of the times, because it cannot be smoother and without bumps. Short cuts sometimes could prove costly in the long run, it may not save our time and money, as you are thinking.

Hi Dpk, I prefer the scenicroute whether than be the shoter or longer journey but usually the scenic route is non motorway and less hustle and bustle and better and more weklcoming stopping of places. Huggles. Ellie :D

I agree with you ellie that scenic route could be a delight to travel. However, if the roads are not bumpy or full of potholes, it would be all the more better.

hi dpk I am inclined to go with your professor as usually a shortcut in the phyical sense is bumpy and hard on your car, and in alife experience or in doing your work shortcuts usually end up in disaster as shoddy work makes even shoddier products and everyone loses. so no shortcut t ake the long way round and do things correctly and right.

i enjoy long roads, long trips, long travels...i always use the time on the road to clear my head and just get new perspective as i have the tme alone for my head. metaphorically, taking a shortcut in life would mean missing a few good things but maximizing your time. with life itself, i've been taking shortcuts. so far, i get to my goal but i know i've missed a lot of landmarks that i HAVE to enjoy. but am still thankful because the time saved i got for taking a shorter route is now being used to explore other roads. am still thankful. just make sure that when you take your shortcuts, you know exactly where you are going. do not attempt the short roads if you will get lost along the way. it'll be a waste of time and experience.

Hi godd! It is interesting to hear that you always like long travels and you have got plenty of time at your disposal. I think if you take a short cut in you life, you may save some time, but is it worth taking the perils of short cuts, in life?

Life is not black and white so there is no definite answer to anything but I do believe that nine times out of ten taking shortcuts in life may end up costing you more time in the long run. I don’t know...I’ve found that during my own life journey whenever I attempted to speed things along and take so called short cuts I have stood in my own way and delayed matters even more. Sometimes just waiting and doing nothing for a while is part of the process for things to come to pass.

Hi Paula! You are right that there cannot be a definite answer to anything and I agree with you that taking short cuts could proved otherwise in the long run. We do not get to gain by short cut, as much we think in our mind. Thanks for joining.

I also heard that short cuts are always a bad cut, it is better to take the long way to your destinations than take the short cut and risk troubles, I prefer a longer route which is smooth and clean too to avoid any misadventures.

There are times where in short cuts are indeed bad cuts. But there are also some that are worth taking. But as the word implies "short cut" theres a notion of being fast but at the expense of something . As you said the long cut might be longer but comfortable on the other hand the short cut might just be a lil bit rougher than the long one. In the end its a matter of choice for you , i mean if you preffer to do things faster but a lil bit challenging or do it the old fashion way .Either way the goal is still the same to reach your destination safe and sound. Have a great day
