Want or not want. shall comply with the Internet, and one rule is to speak the English language. If your mother tongue is English ... there is no problem, you can express anything you want on the internet without any problem you can talk only if you don t have a good gramm, and can make mistakes sometimes .... but who English is not their mother tongue, be a real problem, than you want to communicate on the Internet, and here involved misunderstandings, misunderstood words, can an offense that was not offensive, perhaps a statement of love that was only a statement for a friend ... and so.......happened this to you, even don t was with intention...you lose a friend, you argue with somebody, just because to wrong words in English...i mean you want to say something and somebody else understand something else?

Hi, Ice! You do very well with English. It's not hard to tell when your emotions get in the way, but there are few if any who would be bothered by these errors. Many of the people who post here regularly are far less able to communicate in English than you are!

Of course I understand. However, you should understand that it takes a pretty ignorant person to criticize someone who is obviously doing very well. I wonder how they'd do in your language!

So more like a language barrier? if that's the case, just simply let the person who misunderstood what you were trying to tell with be calm and cooperative first. Then, afterwards, you elaborate the situation in hand. Let her/him know what you really intend to tell him/her. Some people might not get your point because your have difficulties in speaking the english language fluently, yet it's not a problem. The person to whom you are talking to should also consider your situation. He/She must not judge you accordingly to what you might just mispronounced or misused. Do you got my point? Just settle your misunderstanding with a good conversation. An early remedy is through talking and approaching the person immediately after a fight, in order for the flame to lower down or no longer blaze or ignite.

It happened to me but as my mother tongue is English so I do not have the problem with English language however I did have a big problem with someone once when I had to speak French and I did not master the language at that time so It was all misunderstanding between us, we fought because simply we did not understand the language, I find it funny too. So not only do we have problems with the English language but with other languages too which we do not know about.

dear ice, long time. how are you? it is good to have a universal language and that is english. it will be a really great help for people from different nations to understand each other. of course, they should be more understanding knowing that this would only be a second language hence they should be more open minded. thank you for this discussion. ann

Hi icesmile! I hope that this wouldn't happen to any of my many wonderful friends who don't speak English as their first language! I would feel really badly if I knew that people would get upset or misunderstand someone just because they didn't quite understand what they meant! I always appreciate someone who tries to respond and if I'm not quite sure what they are saying, then I would rather say nothing than hurt someones feelings! I think that most of the mylotters who I've come across, and I've been here three years now and made many friends all over the globe who speak many languages speak English extremely well! English is one of the most difficult languages there is to learn! We all have to learn English Grammar in school because it is so very complicated! And you, my dear, speak English as if it is your first language so please tell me this didn't happen to my you because I will have to fight that person and explain!

I have been in similar situation lot of times. Actually I have never learned english in a "proffessional" way, mean I have not studied in school nor in private lections, I know it from movies and by practice. And I can tell you is a big difference. One is what they teach you in school (I have friends facing similar problem after 6-10 years of school practicing-learning), other is the "english from movies" (yet this one is much more closer to reality) and something else the spoken english. Lets not forget that english is "main/only mother tongue" in GB, USA and Australia, yet is not same english ! And there is also cultural issues ...

I see what you mean. Some native here posted discussions using slang and jokes their people understand, so how can they expect a non native English to respond, when often I don't understand what did they try to express? Maybe they did not expect non natives to respond. Or they forgot that many of this site members are not native speakers? Whichever it would be?
