A week in half ago I came down with shingles. I don't know how or why this happened to me. I was eating healthy and taking care of myself. Maybe it really as all to do with stress in trying to sell my home. Anyway the doctor prescribed two medicines one being Prednisone. Oh my God. I don't even take medicine for a headache. Now I'm taking this medicine that is making me have an appetite that I have never had before in my 53 years on earth. Also, I'm the type of person that doesn't know how to sit for very long. This is a steriod and its like I'm on speed. So between eating and running around the house doing everything that I can possibly do everyone is laughing at me. I can't believe the effect drugs do to the mind and body. Have you ever had to take medicine that was making you do things you never did or felt before?

Oh I am so sorry that you got shingles, I had them back in december, and I am only 23, anyone can get them, its just a ticking time bomb really in your body . They just gave me a anti viral and tylonel 3's for the pain which i only took one of anyways, but I also went to the doctor very early with mine. Anyways, yes I have had medicine that has really affected me, whenever I have to use my nebulizer, I get extremely hungry. I ate a whole box of mac n cheese one time, normally i eat a fourth, maybe a third and am totally full. I ate a whole box and was still hungry. I hope that you get better soon though

Thank you so much. The first time I got shingles was when I was seventeen after having surgery for a removal of a tumor. Now this is the second time and I think this was worse case then the first time. However, I see the light at the end of the tunnel so in about a week I will be off the medication and feeling normal again.

Well that is weird for you to have such a reaction like that because it is a steriod. When you take them do you get weaned off? You can't just take it one day and not take it the next. It has to be a gradually weaning period. If, not then you will feel exhausted and like you have been hit by a truck.

My daughter has to take the predisone pills because of her arthritus, I think that s what they are for. My other one took them for Asthma I think, just not sure. I know they had trouble with it.
When I had my car wreck the Dr put me on an antidepressant (not sure why!) and they made me sleep all the time, so he changed the prescription, and I gained weight so he changed it again and I was extremely irritable! They finally took me off of it, they were suppose to get rid of my headaches. Had no effect on them.
I have never had Shingles but hae known a couple people that did it was awful. Hope you are ok.

Thanks GG I knew they were both taking it and different problems. My Asthma daughter has outgrowed most of her problems as an adult now but now my oldest has developed it as a side effect of her Lupus. I have 2 grand daughters with Asthma too.

Prednisone is very good at reducing various types of inflammation. So it is helpful for bogth arthritis and asthma. I had my great niece living with me and she had severe asthma. The first time she had to take prednisone, I was not prepared for the mood swings. One minute she was sobbing hysterically, and the next she was giggling and running up and down the stairs. I have a friend who is taking it as part of his cancer treatment and it is making him very cross.

Hiya lelin,
They put my Mom on Steroids and she was acting like that too a bit. She was very awake and eating a lot also. Downside was that she could not keep still and she was supposed to be resting. But the Steroids did stabilize her and keep her on an even keel.
Hope you feel better now.

oh dear it does show what these medicines can do doesn't it?
Like you I don't often take medicine even for a headache unless it is very bad but some years ago I hurt my back and the doctor had to give me really strong painkillers to try to help get me moving again. Trouble they they made me motion sick so every time I tried to get up, I vomited, that was really horrible because it made my back hurt even more with the bending and retching, it took a while for them to wear off too although I only took them a couple of times.

For me painkillers will make you sicker then the illness itself in alot of cases. Medication for me is scary stuff and I just hope I don't have to go through anything like this again.

don't worry eventually yur doctor will wean you of the prednisone. You are right your shingles most likely did come about from stess and although we don't admit to it usually when we re stressed w don't eat our best. Jus exersice and eat healkthy so you won't have to deal with the added pounds once you're off the prednisone

I'm being weaned off as we speak. I'm so active I don't see any type of weight gain. Maybe only a little in the face that I probably needed anyway.

That is normal. My son takes that for his Asthma attacks. When he takes it, he eats me out of house and home. He also cannot sit still. He drives me batty. I have never taken anything that made me feel like that, but I know what it did to him.

I was not aware of any bad effects the two times I took step down packs of steroid meds, but pain killers are another story. After a surgery I had some percoset to take, and I would dream about people talking and I would see what they were saying in little speech bubbles above their heads. More recently, when taking lortab, a similar med. I had hot flashes and mood swings. I am past that stage in my life.It was not fun.

My brother had to take percoset after a surgery he had, he was in la la land. A denist once prescribed that to me but I refused it. I just can't wait to be off of all this stuff. I feel so bad for people who have to take medication all the time for the rest of their lives. Its not a good way to live.
