hi guys Old people often tell the young "Donnot judge a person by his appearance",it should be meaning that capability than appearance. however, nowadays, whit more interviews putting emphasis on looks and the appearance of applicants, a lot of people come to the conclusion that appearance is more important than capability. do you think ???

I think it is a mix of the two. People say "don't judge someone by their appearance", but if in the case of interviews, somebody comes in wearing stinky clothes, greasy hair and generally very scruffy in appearance (not "ugly" but dirty looking), then no matter how "good" they would be at the job, you wouldn't want to employ somebody who looked like that. Then again if somebody came in looking spectacular, not a hair out of place, perfect clothes and smelling nice- but they were thick as two short planks and would be bad at the job, then again you wouldn't want to employ them! I don't agree you should judge someone by how they look; i.e. if they don't wear make-up or style their hair daily it's easy for people to think they're scruffy- when in actual fact it's more likely they just feel comfortable as they are and don't feel the need to get their make up done or to spend hours doing their hair. This is just one example. But I do think that good appearance and capability are both as important as each other- I don't mean if you're not a good looking person that your not as good as a beautiful person, and vice versa- beautiful people are no better than "ugly" people! But good appearance (i.e. taking pride in having clean clothes and a clean appearance), is very important.

It's actually more of an impression than the appearance. If you show up for an interview wearing shorts and a tank, even if you look really beautiful and sexy, do you think you'll get the job? (unless of course the job requires you to be in shorts and tanks). Some jobs though really require excellent appearances, like flight attendants and 5-star restaurant waiters and waitresses. Usually jobs that require a lot of public relations would want their employees to be beautiful. But then again, some companies really don't care if you're not so good looking. Some are really after the skill, because it's what makes their company grow.

I don't agree that it is about being "beautiful" as such- I have been on flights with very "ugly" flight attendants- but they are very well presented, clean and tidy, clean hair, well pressed clothes etc. It is most definitely a mix of the two in most cases- if I thought I got a job because of how I looked, I would leave that job- I wouldnt want an employer like that, and if I found out someone didn't employ me because of how I looked, I would take them to court for discrimination!!!!

@bingel Impression actually doesn't depend entirely on physical appearances. It could be the way you dress, the way you walk, and definitely how you talk and think. THAT is impression

Having a presentable appearance can and will get your foot in the door. However, if you do not know what you're doing, then that foot that you get inside the door will not be able to sustain you for a long amount of time. You actually have to do the job at hand once you are in. You might get a second look to see what you are capable more easily. However, looks are something that fade with time. If you are capable, then you will be able to sustain the test of time. You can look the best in the world, but its going to be harder to look good in five or ten years down the line. If you're just getting by on your looks after that time, then once you lose those and it is harder to maintain a good appearance, then you hope you had good enough skills.

Hi megamatt: I agree with you in the fact that people should find a good balance between these two things. First, you need to take care of yourself because your appereance is a sign of how organize you are and what kind of life do you have and of course you can't live only because of your good appereance, you have to show that you are a good worker. Intelligence last more that good appereance do in most of the cases so we should not care so much about this. Even with that, our society is over obsessed about this subject. ALVARO

I think it depends! I know one person who's not really very good but she has a pleasing personality. Her first employer was not really impressed by her performance but she improved. Sometimes I think personality can also say something about the kind of job you want to have.

I think these two are important. In interview, interviewer first knowing your personality. You should follow dress code, like if you are applying as a office staff you must wear formal attire. And when you follow this dress code your appearance to the interviewer is good. After knowing you personally he/she gets to know your capability through examinations and the like. Interviewer hire job seeker who capable to do the job unless you apply as a model you must be beautiful and sexy. Wearing tidy, and appropriate attire gives you good appearance.

I experience during my applying for a job after graduation, they prefer the person with have a good look. I notice that some company choose the one with a capability rather than the look. I also notice that there are companies much preferred to hire a person with appearance rather than capability.

Actually capability is more important, it just so happen that if you are applying for a job, it is more easy to see the appearance rather than the capabilities.

Not really , i believe it goes both ways , what i mean is someone whose pretty much good in apperance cant be automatically good when it comes to his or her capabilities already. Someone whose pretty good when it comes to his or her abilities doesnt mean his or her apprearance is good too .But with some other people somehow they find a balance for both like they can be good in appearance while being good in their capability as well. But mind you thats a lil bit tough to do but it is possible. Have a great day and hope to hear from you on my own topics too.

Hi there. Good appearance is the first pass to get entry. After that you can use your skills to show your talent and capability. Before that you don't have a chance to show that however you are skilled or talented unless you have a reputation like Albert Einstein or Bill Gates. I got examples how bad appearance has hampered many of the talented personnel there. I don't mean good appearance is to have a heroic figure. But the candidate should be well groomed, well dressed (not expensive clothes), which results in a pleasing personality.

think capability is more good because you can use it forever but with beauty .. You will not have it until last unless you will undergo facial therapy a day .. but I think when you have them both then your so Lucky ..

Hi, bingel! I think it depends on what job it is. Some jobs like actor, desk clerk, must have a very good appearance, another jobs like shop assistants, must be not too ugly. Anyway, jobs relate to serve public need a good appearance, so looking should be considered when employing. Other jobs like workers, researchers... capability should more important than appearance. But for interviews, appearance is important to impression. Only a few employers know to test skills of employees, if you havn't got a chance to express your capability, the first impression will be very important.

Yeah, i agree that capabilities of a human being is much more important than his appearance. And i also agree to the fact that employer hires an attractive one rather than a fully capable one. Why? My philosophy is this, I think it's all because of us people. A company needs progress, and they need an asset to make them popular, leading them to hire beautiful men and women because they know that, we, consumers, can easily be attracted to a beautiful and handsome employee that makes us buy the products they are selling, repeatedly, even if we do not need it, which, in the other hand, leads to a company's growth and success. But there are still industries hiring a more capable person than the attractive ones. And there are still persons judging by your heart, not by your appearance. God Bless you all.

although we should not solely rely on the appearance of a person, it is still best that you have a pleasing personality. take for instance if you are applying for a job, you may have the capability to do the job but you do not look presentable, most likely you will not be hired. when you interact with other people, you should always be mindful of your appearance and hygiene because it speaks about your personality. a pleasing personality does not mean you should be good looking or beautiful, you just need to know how to carry yourself in front of other people.

People are stereotyping. Most employers place plus factors to good looking applicants. It is not really on the looks alone that makes a person competent. However, let us also credit the fact that one must look presentable, neat and nice to further compliment your abilities.

I think the inner soul should be appreciated than the appearances because the body is perishable whereas the inner beauty is immortal, appearances have never been the first issue for me instead it has become the last because the personality is much more important to me.

HI bingel: Of course not, capability will always be more important. I understand that some people will find more important that his/ her employee would be a good looking person no matter if this person doesn't know a thing of what is supposed that he/ she has to do. I think that is not good that people think that way because, if you simply look good people will use it while if you are an intelligent, competent person you can dominate some situations. Thanks for asking us this question. Have a nice day. ALVARO

i think in cases of interviews, aspects like tidy clothing, tidy hair and such things count in the "appearance" part rather than fair skin or pretty face. but thats just what i think, not sure what goes on through the interviewers mind but one can't do a job without having the knowledge of it, so capability is mandatory. but since, getting some nice threads in not out of our reach, why not have them atleast for the interview?

I think that capability is one aspect in life that will not be taken away. This is one notch higher that good appearance. The appearance does not necessarily means that you are good physically but it is also on the goodness that a person has inside. When you have capabilities and good attitude, you will be making yourself one of the persons with good appearance.

Hello! With regards to employment issue, it is your confident and your wit will counts more..I've known many people who are employed but they didn't have the looks to show off, it's just their capability which leads them to earnings. Just dressed neatly and be a well-groomed interviwee, anyways it's not a commercial pictorial nor a fashion show. Just be yourself and enjoy the interview!

they're both important because appearance can reflect what you're capable of in a lot of ways. you cannot say you're organized or detail-oriented if you look like you just got out of bed for an interview. it's not really about beauty, i think it's more about self-presentation and meeting the standards of the people you want to consider you for something.
