do you wash your hands after petting or playing with your cat?

i remember the days when my mum used to tell me, 'you don't know where the cat's been'..
well, true, we don't know where it's been. but the cats, especially the home-trained ones, do like to groom themselves tediously too... maybe they do clean up a bit. and then there are the inevitable fleas and what nots that come occasionally.
i like my cat. i try to keep it clean and give it a bath as often as appropriate for cats..but i still don't know where it's been. so i still do wash my hands after petting and playing with my cat.
do you?

yeah, some cats do shed alot and the fur comes onto our hands when we pet & stroke them.. good to wash. wouldn't want to accidentally touch food with a furry hand

My mum was always a really clean person and when I left home it was like a big release to not have to be so clean and tidy all the time!
Although I grew up in that kind of environment and my mum used to make me wash my hands after petting any animal its not something I do anymore. I think its difficult to be constantly washing your hands after touching your cat. My cat is definitly part of the family and is always on my lap and looking for affection so I'd probably wash my hands raw if I washed my hands all the time after touching him. I only wash my hands after touching my cat if he's paticularly dirty after being outside and of course I always wash my hands before preparing food.
The only thing I have when it comes to germs and my cat is when he walks on the kitchen surfaces. I make sure I spray them with antibacterial stuff before I make food.

and sometimes those cats can be a little bit too curious and want to try the food... yeah, i'm kind of dealing with the same situation with my cat. so i too spray a bit of the antibacterial stuff on the kitchen tops when i'm going to do any food preparation in the kitchen..

Very good question. I see that there has been quite a big response as well.
I have a house full of cats and more outdoors. Most times I wash my hands after petting or playing with my babies. There are a few times where I forget but I don't ever remember having any health issues as a result.
Here's a twist; whenever I come home from wherever I've been, like the store or any other place, I always wash my hands before touching any of my cats.
I'm always trying to protect them from germs that I pick up like handling money, or shaking hands with someone. I don't need my sweet hearts to get sick from any of that.

yup...our little darlings need protection from the potential germs that we can give to them. that's a good thing to do betlynfrnds even if it may be accidental, we really wouldn't want them to catch anything that may be hazardous to them..

what if immediately after coming out of the shower you had to shoo the cat away from something the cat was playing with and you needed and the cat simply didn't want to let go and you shoo the cat away and the cat accidentally brushes against one of your hands when the cat gets up to run away...?

Hi mario! You know, I don't always wash my hands immediately
after playing with my cats! I wash my hands hundreds of times
a day because I am a clean freak, but my cat, Star is always
on and off my lap, especially when I'm on the computer and
sometimes I don't jump up and run to the sink every time he
is near me! I do always wash my hands before touching food,
or going to the bathroom (and of course after) but not always
after touching him! I do know that I am very careful of what
I am doing if I have touched him or his brother Luna! But,
they do say that cats are cleaner than humans! And I have
met some humans that I wouldn't touch at all!

Hey my cat is also named Star!! But my cat is a girl. lol That's funny what you said about how there are some humans you don't touch at all. haha I am always petting cats that I don't know, but a lot of humans I know, I don't want to be very close to at all. Pretty weird.

I knew we had alot in common! I name my cats before
I even see them! So the poor things never have a chance! My
first cat I knew I wanted to be named Mystique and luckily
she was a girl and so fit her name! She was an 8 pound scary
whaco, but I loved her! My next two were Cougar and Jaguar and
thankfully were boys! Now poor Star and Luna, which you are
correct are girls names are kinda sh1t out of luck!
But, they don't seem to mind! Star is all black and gorgeous
and a boy! And Luna, which definitely is a girl's name, moon in
Spanish, and he looks like a girl, very feminine features,
black and white and pretty face, but a skittish monster, (whos
nickname is "Lunatic")! And as you, I pet everyones cats before
I would touch many "icky looking people"!Did you get my email addy?

Hi mario_stevens,
No, I actually don't wash my hand after playing with my cat, but only because it's MY cat and I know perfectly where she's been. I live in an appartment and she never ever goes out, so I don't need to worry about her being clean or not.

I do not wash my hands after petting or playing with my cats. They are strictly inside cats. They do not ever go out side. I see them groom themselves and each other all the time. Sometime, especially Miss Kitty, will lick herself clean where ive touched her if she dont feel like being touched. Shes just that way. I do wash my hands after cleaning their box. As well as after feeding them. I also wash my hands before i eat.

I agree but if i washed my hands everytime i petted or played with my cats i would have excessively dry skin. Because my hands would be constantly in the water. I think if a person was that extreme about the washin after petting or playing with their pets maybe they should not have pets. Just my opinion.

Yes, I do, mainly because I am allergic to the darling beastie. I adore my cat, Smokey Bones, but after petting him, if I don't wash my hands, I begin itching insanely. If I wait until the itching starts, it does no good to wash, because I scratch whatever kitty left into the skin and it won't wash out. At that point, it's Benadryl to the rescue, which is bad because I have a bleeding ulcer and shouldnt' take anything that can thin the blood, which Benadryl, Aspirin, Ibuprofen and other things can do.

Oh that sucks. I am also allergic to cats and dogs, but not too bad. It usually doesn't irritate my hands. Mostly, they just make me sneeze and my eyes itchy, but that's not always. Usually just in the summer when they shed a lot.

oh..pity you. kind of caught in a catch-22 situation..you adore the cat but have allergies at the same time. well, hopefully you do make sure that you remember to wash your hands each and every time. wouldn't want to go through a bad bout of the allergies now..
take care mysticmaggie!

No I don't do this at all. Maybe I should but they look really clean and always feel clean.
Both of our cats are indoor cats as we do not like the idea of cats roaming the neighbourhood and killing native animals. As they are indoors all of the time they keep pretty clean. I always wash my hands after touching our dog though as she is a filthy beast of a thing.

Our dog feels dirty to touch as she rolls around in the dirt and grass in the backyard all the time. Whenever I touch her my hands smell bad and I have to wash them straight away but I do not get that feeling with my cats.

haha..no offence RawBill, but you literally have a filthy dog? it's funny because i always hear the expression 'filthy dog' being said without any actual dog but i'm sure the fellow you've got isn't too filthy...
sorry, i was digressing..
yup, it would be good to have clean hands after playing with the pets. now days there are newer germs and stuff which can cross contaminate across most of the domesticated pets. makes good sense to wash up a bit
thanks RawBill :)

We don't have cats. My daughter has eczema and is also allergic to cats (well, the fur and dander anyway). I used to be allergic to cats. But if we go to someone's house and any of us pet the cats (my daughter can't help herself), we definitely wash hands - even if it's an indoor cat. I remember I used to have a kids pet book and I specifically remember the potato test . . . pet an animal and then rub a potato - you'll see how dirty a pet can be no matter how clean it is kept . . . so it's always good to always wash hands after touching a pet!

hiya much2say.
washing hands after touching a cat is a definite must for those with allergies.. i have an offline friend who is quite allergic, and it's quite terrible to see him during one of his allergy attacks. he'll end up washing everything that he is wearing (including himself) to make sure that there is no more cat hair stuck to him..
and that potato test sounds cool i might give it a try myself

Yes, I always wash my hand after petting or touching pets or animals, you don't know where they've been and also the bacteria they naturally produce, some of it is foreign to us humans and could harm us. Plus, it's not just animals, I think people just generally wash their hands after touching a lot of other things such as door handles, doing general tasks, especially just before eating... :)

that is really true there...we don't know what we are carrying, or what our pets are carrying...so even though we've just spent a nice time petting and playing with them, it's always wise to wash up before we want to sit down and eat

I do it everytime, my past time is playing with my pets. That includes in the morning. I always remember to wash my hand. I don’t know where my pets been, they are prone to germs, even if you take them in a bath they don’t wear slippers during walking and during walking they used their hands too. germs are all over their body. I still hug them no matter what and I don’t forget to wash my hand.

When I used to have cats, I would have to wash my hands after playing with them because each cat's hair is contaminated by each cat's self-bathing. I would not be able to touch my food after touching the coating of a cat.

She's a good girl really clean but she sheds alot and I can;t stand not washing my hands before I eat so that's the only time I can think of.
