I agree with you "cip"to a point. For personal training and self confidence you can't beat military "training". But when the training turns to Political Indoctrination for the benefit of the few privilged and politically connected that's where I draw the line. Self-defense yes; aggression NO! What do you think?

i would never wanna be a soldier. they are but glorified murderers. before i went to the us marine corps, i heard=honor, courage, commitment! but from the first day of boot camp on they only stressed two things...to obey orders and kill. sure, even our bodies have an immune system. but our immune system doesnt generally leave our bodies to battle all the bacteria out in the world! it waits until a virus or bacteria invades our bodies, and then enforces the war against it. but nations..especially america go to war with other nations....that have not even bothered america! that cant be right! so i would never wanna be a soldier...ever. and as i learned from bein in the military...sometimes nations go to war with other nations...simply because they didnt get the proper respect in a greeting! thousands of souls of soldiers lost over such small matters! i could never support it. eventually, i was discharged from the military for not obeying all the orders of the officers..under other than honorable. but it was worth it. in love, as in war..there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. they dont teach morals to soldiers, like the morals i have learned from martial arts before i went into military. fortunately the morals of kung fu practice stuck with me. if soldiers learned the morals and respect for life as taught in the best of martial arts..they would be true soldiers indeed. but until then..they are but glorified murderers

"RIGHT ON BROTHER"! I could not have said it better. I too have been involved with martial arts. (Aikido) and as you know it is a "DEFENSIVE" form.
Do you know the teachings of "SAN SHU"?(sp?) He states, "THE BEST WAY TO FIGHT WAR IS NOT TO HAVE IT"! that's paraphrased but I think you get the point. Have a great rest of your life Bro.

Thank u thank u! It s a truly nice thing 2 b hold n other speak 4 the true path f a warrior whose 1st lesson s avoidance! War must b averted all costs & like the character f the jedi 1 must b a peaceful warrior. S the saying goes.....a man f peace must not b weak but a man peace must not b armed (threatening) so we make evergreen finger a dagger & each hand n axe or a sword. Find more ways 2 preserve life than destroy. Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim, maimed rather than kill b cuz all life s precious, nor can it b replaced

Never!. I want to end wars and live in peace. If there are no wars and no terror then why do we need soldiers for. We created the money and it created the F-ing problems for us. We are all supposed to be living by the word of God. God created us for some purpose . Man disobeyed him and now he has forgotten the real purpose of life and is fighting for material comforts. It hurts when i think about it.

I defy you to name just one nation that actually lives by "the word of GOD". I think you'll find there are none. Let's get real mankind has always had wars and conflicts. Some of the worse have occured in the name of religion. ie. Both "CRUSADES" for example. I think if you look back through history you will find mankind has had wars almost throughout its entire time on planet Earth.
Look around at what's going on in the world now. From an observer's view point and bear in mind this is only my observation, the various conflicts seem to be on the surface "religious" in nature but when you come right down to it's "OIL" which translates to the bottom line,$$$$$$'s.
The other struggle world wide is a true religious reason between two factions that call their diety by the same name, both Both worship in similiar ways and read some of the same words in their respective holy books yet they are at eachother's throats and have been that way for several thousand years. WHY? Can't each side just leave eachother alone?
Would I recommend to a young man go to the military today? Absolutely NOT! Would you?

I'm really impressed by the snipers that I have watched and when I was a child I really wanted to be one. But things change as we grow up. Until one day I don't want to be a soldier anymore.

"Alan" would you put your life on the line if you believed the political/economic policies were not in your people's best interest? Alot of the time that's what a soldier has to do. Go against his or her natural instincts and personal beliefs to serve the state. Do you still want to be a soldier?

No I have never considered joining the military especially now that I have a daughter. I could not bear to be sent away from her and my husband. I am a woman but I don’t think separating from family is any easier for men. I commend service men and women; I could not do it, they are true heroes.

My mother was a military wife for over 27 years. You are right it is very difficult both the wife and the children. My father missed almost all of my school years including my graduation from high school and all of my major atheletic events. It was very hard for my mom and for me.
You did the right thing.

Hi Himan!.
My grandpa is a soldier and he join in fight for freedom Indonesia. He had star for it. Many of family are soldier including 4 of my cousins. I personally don't wanna part of my family to become a soldier, I don't wanna to put my love one life in jeopardy every time and I will not allow my future kids become a soldier.
I think its people have difference call in my life maybe yours is become a soldier maybe you can join again after finish university so you will have a bigger chance and better rank when become army so you will not the first choice when sent to battle field.

I really had a high respect on soldiers, I am from a family of soldiers too, so since I was a kid i really dream to become one.But my dad did not allow me.Until now as I see soldiers in uniform I look at them as my hero.

My compliments to your dad. He may very well have saved your life. You are right to look upon soldiers as heroes. They put their lives on the line for people they do not know who send them into dangerous situations so someone, shall we say "of extreme means", can acquire even more power, money or special considerations.
When will we humans learn? Maybe some glorious day we as the human race will learn to live togather in "PEACE". LET'S HOPE!

I was a sailor in the US Navy stationed in the northern part of S. Viet Nam on a river patrol boat. Believe me it is not what you think. There is no glory in seeing another human blown apart or all shot up on your side or the enemy's side. I can assure you that is NOT a "great" feeling. When you are in the military for whatever country you are only a tool to do whatever the "POLITICIANS" want be it right or wrong. Being a soldier, airman,or sailor means you are only a killing tool to be used when all else fails.
You can ask any soldier what he feels before and after combat and you would be hard pressed to find one that actually enjoyed the experience. Be happy you won't to go into the military. Live a long, prosperous life with you and yours and be "HAPPY" you do not have to do military service.

Here in the UK there is a deep sadness regarding soldiers just now. I feel that the majority of the UK are confused as to why our men and women, many of them just teenagers are being brought home in coffins. It is heartbreaking to watch on the news. Their bodies being brought back and driven through the first British town they arrive in, where all the people come out and line the streets to pay their respects to the soldiers passing in their hearses. One of the first times I saw this on the news it was 7 bodies, and it is something that I think will stay with me forever. I'll never forget that queue of hearses and the feeling of complete devastation that everyone in the country felt.

Ask yourself "WHY", and see if you can come up with a "REASONABLE" answer as to why this happening and will continue to happen as long as mankind possesses the the "GREED" factor and continues to make war because someone is "DIFFERENT" in the the way they live and worship.

No I didn't personally but I very briefly thought about becoming a police woman. My brother thought for a bit about joining the army. The thing is, we instantly (as mothers, sisters, brothers, etc.) worry that they will get killed or injured. And so for me it is such a dangerous thing to become a soldier. Perhaps it is admirable, but I worry for people out ther fighting. And many people have a hard time after being in war and have mental and physical problems.

You hit it right on the head "leighann". The military experience doesn't end when you return to your "life". If you had been in combat you will always see and remember the situation for the rest of your life. This can cause emotional problems within the family and frends etc.
Nope, being a soldier nowadays is a very risky bisiness; don't you think?(lol)

Once upon a time I remember wanting to join the armed services! I was so enthusiastic for it when I was a teenager and I used to be a Sea Cadet as well. There was one thing stopping me though and that was the fact that I had asthma. I first applied for the Navy and failed the medical and then I applied for the Royal Air Force and again, I failed the medical and lastly I applied to join the Army and well it was the same story over again!
I think I had a common picture in my mind back then about seeing the world and what the forces could do for you, how it could build your character and teach you discipline and so forth. Those days have changed now though! I think it's virtually guaranteed that if you join any of the forces it's highly likely that you will find yourself being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan and I'm pretty certain that this would put a lot of people off.
I think that become a soldier is very admirable though and they deserve the utmost respect as they are constantly putting their lives on the line for country or in the case of the UK Queen and country! Everyday we hear on the news how soldiers are losing their lives! It seems like there is no end to the turmoil and pain that families face.
Anyway, my story of trying to join the forces is over but I have a healthy respect for our boys out there doing a tremendously difficult job! Andrew
