The world's most expensive bread?

An artisan baker in the UK is baking a sourdough spelt loaf and selling them for £21 each (roughly US$25) and he is selling over a hundred a week! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1284943/The-best-thing-sliced-bread-.html I agree with him that most of the commercial "bread" is badly produced and not fermented properly (they add liquid gluten to it as well and then we wonder why so many folk become gluten intolerant). However, would you pay that much for a loaf? Do you pay extra for a good loaf or do you bake your own bread to avoid the mass produced loaves?

my principle in life is simple, if can afford it, then buy it! there are reason why some things are priced differently some are reasonable some are just priced for people who are having a hard time figuring out where to spend their overwhelming wealth..

Hello my friend, how are you its great discussion. I believe they must be expensive because they sell it tradition and dedication to make old fashion way bread. I have try to make my own bread several times and its not working so I give up. I believe it takes a lot of luck to make bread by hand, because its take a lot of effort and time.

What is going wrong with the bread? There's a lot of bakers hanging around on mylot, so why not start a discussion about it?

I have a bread machine. we often make our own bread with it. Mostly because I don't seem to knead it the right amount and the machine seems to do just fine.

Well that must be some really delicious awesome bread to pay that kind of money. I guess if it made me feel as if I was entering heavens gate as I took a bite but then a might. However, if it is just merely good and doesn't make me cry from its amazig flvour then no I would not pay that much for a loaf of bread. I may pay $10 for a really good loaf, but even that is pretty high. I think a good price for excellent loaf of bread would be around $5.00. I do occasionally make my own bread, but I have not done it in a while. I wish I had more time to make more homemade bread, but it is so good I would be tempted to eat it all and then I would get fat.

Hi I do bake a lot of bread myself - it costs me )with fuel used in cooking) less than £1 to make a lrge loaf or a dozen bread rolls, so for an artisan bakerto choose 21 times this is pure and utter robbery!!! You can buy a really well made traditional loaf from a good baker for less than £2!!

It does seem somewhat steep but nowadays it's getting harder to find proper bread unless you make it yourself. Even "overnight" baking is becoming a thing of the past, it's all pumped full of chemicals and liquid gluten and probably shouldn't even be called bread! I have a bread machine - sort of a cheat but because we only eat a couple of loaves a week at most it is economical for us and at least the bread gets fermented.

I can't bake anything worth eating, so I tend to spend a little more buying the fresh baked goods from bakerys that do their own baking on site. Alot of the times you can also ask them to make you a special loaf - gluten free/fat free/no sugar etc. (so long as you tell them ahead of time) at no additional cost.

I can't think of the nearest bakery that does on-site baking. A few that are part of a chain that still do overnight bread but that's it for "real bread" around here, so I've got a bread machine so I know what I'm eating!

It lasts two weeks? That's pretty cool. Of course I wouldn't spend that much money on bread. It's kind of like hearing about the $100 burger they sell in a restaurant in New York City. That stuff better be darn good! I don't buy bread. I don't eat bread. If I had a bread making machine, I would have a great time with it. And when I saw I don't eat bread, I mean at home. I just never seem to find any that I like, or that stays fresh too long. Like tonight I had just a plain seasoned hamburger patty - no bread.

If the baker has customers stupid enough to pay 21 pounds for a loaf then good luck to him/her. And there was me thinking the worlds economy was in a terrible state. I bet it's the same people who messed up the economy that are still able to buy such expensive bread.

For the sake of the kitchen, we buy our bread at the grocery store.

I will definitely pay extra for a good loaf but not everyday. I use normal loaf everyday but once in a while i would go to famous bakery and buy an expensive but good one. sometimes it's good to treat yourself and your family after days of hard work and that is even with a good slice of bread.
