Snails

I'm sick of the snails eating my flowers so I've decided to take revenge! Helix aspersa or the common garden snail is edible and people tell me that they are very nice with garlic butter. I've made a Snail Gaol in the garden and I'm rounding them up and putting them on a clean diet for a few weeks and then they will be purged and introduced to the saucepan. That will teach them to stay way from my Cosmos! Have you ever eaten snails?

I have never had the temerity to try snails (though I have eaten sea shellfish). They have long been eaten in Somerset, however, where they are called "Wallfish" and in France they regularly eaten and are called 'le petit gris' to distinguish them from the larger Roman Snail. I once visited the National Snail Farm near Hereford which supplies local restaurants and supermarkets with packaged snails. There they grow them on a special diet of oatmeal, greens and other secret ingredients and they grow HUGE! We were told that, whereas the Roman snail needs about 15 mins cooking, the 'garden' snail (Helix aspersa) is much more tender and only requires 5 mins. It seems that the packaged snails that you can get (ready cooked and filled back into their shells with garlic butter) may really be Helix aspersa packaged with Roman snail shells (which are harder and prettier)!

The one good thing about snails is that they don't run very fast!

My family of hedgehogs eat all the slugs in my garden! As regards eating snails, I do love l'escargot with lots of garlic butter but I don't think that I'd fancy eating ordinary garden snails, . I know that they are safe to eat but I also know that you need to clean them while they are alive before you can eat them. You do this by feeding them flour to clean out their intestinal tract. I'll stick to the one's in the restaurant thank you!!

We used to have hedgehogs around but they seem to have disappeared (probably got flattened on the road or some prat using slug pellets). The reason for the Snail Gaol is so I can control their diet (no toxic plants or yukky stuff) and then purge them.

Good on you, ha ha ha. I've eaten deep fried snails before. Tastes good, high in cholesterol however.

haha, you have done great revenge, the snails will be scared if they have consciousness. I didn't eat any snails, and have no plan to eat them. I think it's terrible to eat mollusks.

I had escargot once, so I had snails I guess. I wasn't too keen on them, but I'm one of those people who will try almost anything once.

Hi. hvedra. Wow! You are really mixing up your poisonous potion here I see! I hope that this will get rid of them for good. I have never ate snails before. I think that snails are so very disgusting and I would never want to touch or be around them at all.

Hi Hvedra!. I that quite funny statement . Do you think its really can be eaten? I never hear it before is it the same with snail they use in French restaurant to make escargot. We usually eat water snail, we can find it in rice field, its quite tasty if you know how to cook it. We usually cook it at home to ensure it really clean.

Hahaha, that is awesome. Good way to make the best out of a bad situation. I myself have not eaten snails before, but I know some people who have, and they say they don't taste bad, but they didn't like the texture. They said they were somewhat rubbery, probably like overcooked squid. Good luck with that. Tell us how they turned out!
